  • This Kinda acts like my dick on a loney monday afternoon.

  • @dbeatz93 it spins around?

  • obv a lab setting ok. the side of my houses' water gutter DOES NOT SPIN. can we get some real

  • Scientists would love to research cancer if they could afford to run their own lab, but science costs money and until a pharmaceutical company decides to spend money on making their medicine obsolete, you won’t see it done. Though there are always scientists working through government funding and donations, corporations play a large role to direct science and the areas of interest.

  • Holy Crap !!! thumbs up for the Icicle Of a thousand Dreams! 1:23

  • Can't cure cancer but can reduce your changes by 90% if you stop eating animal protein, white flour and refined sugar. So I personally wish that instead of spending all this money trying to cure cancer, spend money educating people on a healthy diet and lifestyle.

  • @drawds 90%? I don't believe you. Can you give me a source?

  • @drawds

how does not eating animal protein prevent cancer? Does it cause radiation? Does it damage DNA?

And did you forget that a human is an animal and thus full of animal protein?

I think what you are saying is pseudoscientific and untrue. Can you cite the acedemic journal and research that describes how you go from animal protein to cancer?

  • I just read the article and it didn't really give much more information than this video other than the problems the expect to solve with this but I don't think a solution is in what shapes they make. If you wanted to keep Ice off of power lines you would need to keep water from freezing there, which the shape of icicles doesn't solve.

  • Cancer isn't a problem, it's a solution to controlling the world's population as nature intends it. Focus instead of bettering the lives of those who can live without drastic medical aid?

  • @Nebelung13 If you actually read the article in the description, you might learn something. Hopefully what you'll learn is that you shouldn't be so ignorant and that not all scientists who grow icicles want to blow up the world, they actually have a perfectly good reason for their research.

  • looks like shaking willys

  • everyone who made fun of this must be the biggest no life dick on the planet who never fineshed college and now are jelouse and taking it out on videos made by people who are smarter than them

  • I always wondered what's the difference between tap water and distilled water icicles!

  • I'm not sure where all this hate is coming from. A lot of people are making fun and saying that this video is useless.

Perhaps to you it is useless; but historically, it has been shown that advances in other fields and better understanding of those principles actually helps other fields as well.

Sorry to all those who don't like any and all knowledge.

  • @ChairmanKiel Dude, They are icicles. Long and pointy /end report

  • @Aaron16ExtraAmmo

So, apparently, a video with/without commentary is the total summation of an experiement? They have the data that explains the formation of water freezing in different conditions.

Did you know that Ice sickles are a cause of death in cities? because they can fall from great heights, and impale someone. This research can possibly help in preventing their formation, and even possibly help in studies of water crystals forming in space, upon the vessels/stations they will be in.

  • @ChairmanKiel There is no way you are going to make icicles not long and pointy is there? The only solution is to stop them forming by not letting water freeze in the area and the only way to do that is to raise the temperature there or employ some sort of salt concentrated coating on the edges of structures.

  • @Aaron16ExtraAmmo

"The only solution is to stop them forming by not letting water freeze in the area and the only way to do that is to raise the temperature there or employ some sort of salt concentrated coating on the edges of structures."

Oh really? I'm very interested in knowing your exact methodological procedure by which you obtained this knowledge. You must be wise and intelligent indeed, to have been so quickly tell others that you KNOW for a fact what you say is fact.

  • @ChairmanKiel Because of things we already know :/. Icicles form due to water freezing in a vertical fashion influenced by gravity. So the solution is to remove one of those conditions... obviously not gravity so we have to keep the water from freezing. Water freezes at a certain temperature and pressure. Again we can't control the pressure so we would have to raise the temperature or raise the freezing point of the water.

  • @Aaron16ExtraAmmo

The fact of the matter is, this is just ONE type of test they've done. They haven't even truely begun to even see it's other possible avenues.

I'm glad you believe that you have all the answers; but for the rest of us that are more honest with ourselves and each other, we'll continue to study and test even the seemingly mundane.

  • @Aaron16ExtraAmmo Thanks, that's really going to help the scientist figure out how to stop icicles forming on aeroplanes. You probably haven't even read the article that comes with this video so you probably don't even know what I'm talking about. Maybe you should just stop commenting on youtube videos until you get some qualifications that prove you're not a retard. Until then, your comment is proof enough of your blatant ignorance.

  • @rockguitargeorge You are right, I had not considered and was not aware of the dangers of icicles on aeroplanes. Another person also pointed out to me how icicles are dangerous in cities. However I have to point out that the video description should probably mention of few of it's uses instead of promoting how icicles form different shapes... Now that I think about it, all the shapes are still long and pointy and the concentration on shape isn't going to solve the problems you suggested.

  • @rockguitargeorge In addition my comment was on this video and from the basis of the content in the video, my comment was not inaccurate. Long and pointy is the only thing this video showed and is the only thing I am obligated to refer to in my comments so I don't think you can hold me accountable for not knowing information outside of this video when commenting on it.

  • Very cool! ;)

  • Even the voice over lady is speechless after seeing this vid and can't come up with any use for that

  • @whytyt So you don't think it would useful to find ways to stop unwanted ice build-up on planes or power lines? Those are just possibilities mentioned in the article about this video, that you clearly haven't read. The whole point in this kind of research is to understand the physical world that we live in, any "uses" may arise later and we cannot predict exactly where research might lead in the future.

  • @rockguitargeorge good point. i was just making fun of how a lot of previous vids come with uses, no matter what sort. and relax man, if you are going to defend your view (which is totally valid) everytime someone come up with something different, you will surely be very busy...

  • i could have figured this shit out myself

  • I never knew NewScientist were able to troll like that.

  • Thanks for explaining what was going on in the video!

  • actually plants do the same thing. they rotate while they grow up. i cant remember he name though

  • I want to eat thoses

  • This is like Half Life 1 all over again

  • @wolfganggangwolfe Must be the icing on the... cake.

  • Explain plz!

  • @dearestkranthi Read the bloody article in the description, it explains it better than any of the douchebags on youtube can

  • how are the ripples on the icicle formed?

instead of one tip why are there many tips?

why spin the icicle as it is forming?

  • The description has an article! before u say about how this doesnt show you anything, try reading the article

  • I FINALLY GET IT NOW!!!! Every roof comes with a build in spinning tube powered by running mice!

  • CRUDICLES!

  • im no scientist, but i'm sure that's not how icicles are made.

  • @AVerbene I think the most important thing here is that you are no scientist

  • In conclusion we learned using $200 camera we can justify $200000 grant.

  • @falcon02012 and now you know why cancer the cold and aids will never be cured.

  • @TheEviIOyo So you think every single scientist in the world, from astro physicists to bio-geologists should forget whatever research they're doing, study pharmacology for 10 years and then all start trying to cure cancer? Then who's going to develop the technology for your next laptop and mobile phone? Who's going to design your environmentally friendly car or make fusion power a reality? In regard to this video, who's going to stop icicles growing on aeroplane wings?

  • so whatever they hang from spins around. aight, got it! thanks newscientists!

  • Pretty useless;

    Waste of time

  • WOW!!! COOL!! THANKS!!! but what happens with rain water??

  • screw cancer, lets concentrate on frozen water!

  • @Nebelung13 No just screw your job so you can work on cancer, even though you are probably not interested nor qualified to find a cure for it.

  • @YuneShik

We waste shitload of money and time we don't have on shit like this, not to mention cosmetics, boob jobs.

Our economies are crashing yet we insist on wasting time i nthis non-urgent matters. As curious and entertaining they might be ,its a waste of time! if yo ucan't deduct that then its your problem, but i rather see money better allocated.

    screw you :/

  • @Nebelung13 How are you qualified to say what areas of science are worth investigating? Have you researched Steven Morris' experiment? Can you predict where where the research might lead in the future? The whole point in science to gain knowledge of the world around us, not to entertain your tiny mind. You never know how a discovery could become useful in the future, for example, the guy who invented electricity didn't predict the iphone. That's a simple example so you understand.

  • @rockguitargeorge i don't see the iphone doing anything to gap or resolve the most fundamental problems of humanity! iphone is a toy , there is nothing advanced about it, its a pretty mobile phone with capacity to access some features preivous relegated to PC's.

I never claimed to be qualified, i said i thought it was money being wasted on trivialities, which yo uso ahve not proven me wrong yet, i ask you this, would you prefer money to be invested in cancer research or videogames?

  • @rockguitargeorge Please let us stop pretending that we actually have time and money to fuck around! We ought to be a bit mreo pragmatic and ethical with what we do with our intelect.

For example we should cocnetrate in having postiive technology, rather the nfocusing the greatest sums of money on weapons that could blow up the earth, tell me where is the porpuse of such wretched things.

like Albert Einstein said: Our technology as surpassed our humanity

  • @Nebelung13 When you say we don't have time and money to fuck around, who are "we"? How do you know how much time or money they have and who are you to judge what academic research should be carried out?

What makes you think that this is "negative technology" ? How do you know that a greater understanding into the crystalline structure of water won't lead to something "positive" in the future? What makes you think this experiment costs vast sums of money? And how is it going to blow up earth?

  • this is stupid

  • wtf is this, why dont they just time lapse a real fucking icicle?!

  • @Mrmtjones This will help people invent a portable device which will create icicles for them! Brilliant! I could sell it at gift shops!

  • The icicles on my house don't spin.

  • Why are they spinning?

  • "How icicles get their shapes" Because recording the side of your house would cost to much

  • Well... obviously

  • I have never seen an icicle look like ANY of those...

  • Youtube needs a Troll button Next to the spam button !!!!!!

  • Have to say it

    COOL ;-)

  • eeh! the guy is from toronto!! Maple leaf still sucks tho..

  • @000blind000 It's just a fact Leafs Blow.

  • You spin me right round, baby. Right round. Like a record baby. Round round round.

  • i want one of those!

  • Oh, great. Now they're invading the obvious...

  • Scientific vibrators

  • This must be the only channel that still uploads in 360p

  • o.0

Some of these could really use narration.

  • how does this cure cancer???

  • @mikel92 No such thing as a cure for cancer, can't cure something that is naturally a part of us

  • @themaxxray

    "naturally a part of us"

What? That doesn't make sense at all. Cancer is removable, and anything that can remove something is considered a cure. Cancer is seldom TRULY benevolent (we're not talking about benevolent growths here), either, and "naturally" is really the biggest tautology of all tautologies.

Bacteria are natural, and the human body is full of them, yet we can cure disease caused by malignant bacteria. Your assertation doesn't hold.

  • @Lijacote Even in the womb, our body devolops cancer growths. It's when our body cannot fight off these growths is when medical action is called for. There is never a point when the body cells are not overproducing cells. To remove such natural process would have adverse effects on our physiology. ie our bodies can turn on itself and consume healthy tissue, which happens in certain instances. Comparing bacteria to the overproduction of cells is a stretch. How do I know this, I'm a bio student

  • @themaxxray hmm, our body doesn't develop cancerous growths that it fights off (because if the situation has gone that far then medical intervention is always necessary for survival, provided it’s not a benign tumor). Instead our body has a complex system of destroying mutated cells that if not detected/eliminated might proliferate uncontrollably, causing (most of the time) cancerous growths. My source: Medical student

  • @themaxxray lol keep studying.

  • @themaxxray

Your argument is sound, and I concede. I'll admit, I was blinded by "a natural part", in specific the "natural". It's a red flag for me. Sorry!

  • @mikel92 I think the real question is: how does this cure stupidity.

  • Science is not about doing research with a specific goal, it's about understanding the world around us and utilizing that knowledge.

A lot of usefull applications of this knowledge were discovered by accident, expirimenting for different goals.

Please show the scientists some respect no matter the subject.

  • @kwukduck Good yes, scientists are not suppose to do anything. How very status quo from you.

    lol

  • @gabydewilde

I was merely pointing out that science isn't limited to a single purpose demanded by some people that see this specific problem as the most important thing in the world. We each have our field of specialization, all contributing to the knowledge of mankind.

People could also consider asking the researchers why this was done, instead of raging that they aren't helping science and/or are doing useless things.

  • @kwukduck I totally agree, but if everyone on here would read the article in the description, then they would find out that this research may lead to ways of preventing unwanted ice build-up on aeroplanes. Anyone who intends to fly on a plane in the future might benefit from such research.

  • @kwukduck "Please show the scientists some respect no matter the subject."

    ehhh.... no

  • People need to stop talking about curing cancer in EVERY SINGLE science video. And to the people that ask this question, are you in any way helping to find a cure to cancer? Chances are you don't do anything close to science or medicine or any of the other stuff that could help. Also, cancer is not the only problem that needs to be fixed. I believe that all research is important and sometimes concepts from a very distant topic just might hold the key to curing cancer or other diseases.

  • @kotsoft Sorry for going off topic, but speaking of very distant topics curing cancer... have you heard of Vitamin B17?

  • @kotsoft a tip for you is to google "internet trolls"

  • @kotsoft check this out - it's from national Canadian news

    youtube.com/watch?v=HVTaJn1dMrs

maybe the answer to cancer is known - maybe it's just not profitable

please watch video - and pass it on

    download it

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡ǝɯɐƃ ǝɥʇ ʇsoן ʇsnɾ ǝʌɐɥ noʎ˙˙˙˙uɹǝɔuoɔ ʎɐɯ ʇı ɯoɥʍ oʇ

  • So... did we cure cancer?

  • @kravenraze go suck a dick and then put it in your ass!

  • @theshadow170y umad?

  • @theshadow170y Sure, you far away?

  • I'm kind of tired of useless videos with no information spamming my subscription box... Sorry, but my sub is gone.

  • WTF NEWSCIENTIST UR TROLLIN HARD

  • So you make this... and then YOU STAB SOMEONE WITH IT!!!!!!

    Right..?

  • @MysticalFlyingMonkey

I'll give you a medal if you manage to kill someone with one of those. He'd have to be naked, you'd only get one stab as his reflex would likely break the icicle inside of him, and it wouldn't be able to penetrate his chest where vital organs are due some ribs in the way, if you don't tie him up and watch him bleed to death he will survive without doubt, probably be in good enough shape to kick your ass due to a surge of adrenaline. Send me the video, should be fun to watch

  • but how does this help cure cancer?

  • @z3253304

    Does your comment cure cancer?

  • @drn000 FOOL, I AM CANCER

  • Going for IgNobel this year?

  • and how will this cure cancer?

  • Great, now we can use this for........

  • @Odslought santa cabobs

  • my life is now complet <.<

  • 2nd=vibrating dildo.

  • why make it spin?

  • @GabrielKnightz so you can se the shape on all sides

  • @GabrielKnightz it needs to be agitated to form crystalline regions, Its sorta like the ice they use to make ice sculptures.

  • @basslinet Aaah, thanx :)

  • whats with all the immature and moronic comments on this

  • icypenis

  • oh so know its so clear to me, they are spinning around inside a tube thing and then someone hangs them from the roof!

  • @the12221 genius

  • @the12221

First of of all you meant to say NOW, not KNOW, you fucking low life retarded shit, English is so obviously easy you should be ashamed to fuck that up.

Assuming you have more than half a brain still functional, you should know by now (here's that complex word again!!! HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!) that fundamental research is the reason your retarded moronic ass was able to leave that stupid comment.

  • @toulouse666

what the fuck is up your ass

  • @toulouse666 Take it easy! no reason to overreact! :)

  • This is how my poop is formed

  • gravity and realy cold temps derp

  • Do you really need a lab for this? Can't you go outside and look?

  • @coollikeyodais i doubt theyre just watching it, theyre probably monitoring a lot of other things that they need a lab for :)

  • That's hawt *wink*.

  • Fuck the police PEW PEW PEW ;) gotta love pineapple express

  • useful scinetist naaaaat
