  • Audience coughers should be shot on the spot

  • This concerto must be very special for Barenboim. Especially because, if I'm not mistaken, Yo Yo Ma's playing the cello that once belonged to Jacqueline.

  • @tteu123 Actually you are wrong. It is not his strad as many people have mistaken it for. It is his Montagnana. Cheers mate

  • i'm addicted to repeat it from 10 times everyday

  • how dare they cough when in the presence of Yo Yo Ma. haha

  • @keiferc93 Well, at least it's not cellphone ringtone LOL haha

  • Great!!

  • Amazing, Breathtaking, Impressive, Astonishing, Awesome, Magical, Unthinkable, Wonderful, Skillful, Smooth, and Impossible are some of the things I can describe Yo-Yo Mama's playing skills. He is just a genius at cello!

  • currently learning this piece for a state competition. Thank God i found this video.. Yoyo ma blows me away.

  • ㅋㅋㅋ

  • I am absolutely blown away, and keep in mind, he memorized this whole frickin thing

  • @ihategeorgedubyabush - equally impressive is that Barenboim memorized the WHOLE SCORE! simply stunning.

  • He turns the cello into some sort of magical beast.

  • This is my favourite movement in the entire concerto, and Yo Yo Ma plays it with such passion, emotion and vision... It moves me... thank you for this recording.

  • Whoever suggests that Ed Elgar's public are just his fellow Britons should take notice of how popular this concerto is all around the world.

  • amazing musician. I actually love all the funny faces he puts on too...

  • where is the very beginning of the song?

  • i love watching him move while he plays, Im just waiting for him to fall off his seat! lol

  • "look Audience! No Eyes!"

  • In my most honest opinion, I do not believe that after watching and listening to the 35+ minutes of the Elgar Cello Concerto that the most amazing fact is how well Yo Yo Ma played the piece, how beautiful the piece is, or even how well the CSO played underneath him, but rather the fact that he memorized the music down to an exact art. Throughout the entire performance did he not appear to make a single mistake, miss a note, or play out of tune, but he also managed to play with so much emotion!

  • I play guitar, and it just seems tacky after watching Yo-Yo Ma do his thing.

  • you have more respect for the musician when you know how dedicated they are. Yo yo Ma deserves mad respect because it would take days or weeks even for a master like his self to memorize a song of this caliber and play it so perfectly. definitely a true master among masters . =)

  • I hate it when it gets to 10:01

  • @ChaseandDonny

    So,press reply.

  • Sir Edward Elgar - Cello Concerto, Op. 85: Mr.Barenboim made an unforgettable recording of this masterpiece with his wife Jacqueline du Pré and the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, in November, 1970...maybe the best cellist of the 20th century...

The cello used by Yo-Yo Ma here, a Stradivarius Davidov is the same.

  • @MrGunterguerrero

I thought Yo-Yo Ma was playing a Montagnana in this performance?

  • @ashcello93 Yes, Mr.Ma main cello is a Domenico Montagnana, Venice, 1733, indeed. But it seems to me here is the Stradivarius Davidov, the same used in the recording of the Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and a tribute to Jacqueline du Pré.

  • @ParkwooDxFellows I'll ask to Mr. Ma himself, than I let you know.

  • Who carries Elgar's genius today? This piece seems so simple yet so incredibly complex and gorgeous! Wow!

  • how can people listen to this dribble? it has no soul or heart, adele puts so much more emotion into her music

  • He sweats more than I do after a five mile run :) Now that's passion!

  • My history teacher (and Academic Decathlon coach) calls this Yo-Yo Ma's Cellogasm

  • fine, this is great but..why is he so theathral?¡

  • @ykd5l just shows how passionate he is... or maybe he's also having a cellogasm

  • @ykd5l He's not trying to be thats just how passionate he is about playing. Hes putting his heart into it

  • Such musical perfection. Whoever said he had a mess-up should post a video of themselves playing. I'm sure they would sound like crap in comparison to this. One of the greatest of all time. Elgar would be proud. (Jacqueline as well)

  • common people how can u dislike it he is amazing i love him so muuuuch

coz yoyoma and many others cellists but not all u,,u dont find a lot of differents between his live concerto video and the records

  • I absolutely LOVE this movement :) the intensity and musicality and beautiful notes are just enthralling!

  • Du Pre did it better.

  • @buttseckswithotters well even if she does it better, it's the same cello and he did play it very well...I like your name by the way

  • @ParkwooDxFellows Thanks. :D

And he did do a good job, but Du Pre's interpretation, especially at the end of it, is a lot more intense and has much more momentum.

  • @ParkwooDxFellows He's actually playing on his Montagnana, not the Strad....

  • @xbasket12x My bad..I just assumed because he's being cunducted by Daniel Barenboim

  • most passionate and Moving ending!!

  • I can't believe the 28 dislikes.....it's impossible, who can hate this. This is amazing

  • @xbasket12x Well that my tell us how many people in the world can appreciate fine arts. You need to look for the background and the context. YYM is the best!

  • @u2bvideo Only people who love Yo Yo Ma come to look at this video people who appreciate real music

  • What a moving performance, Ma is obviously emotionally moved at the end and so is Barenboim who has a special attachment to this piece as well. Just beautiful, at times it seemed as though a heavenly angel had descended upon Ma connecting him with Barenboim and the orchestra

  • i bet the cellist behind ma yoyo are jealous of him hahaha. Awesome piece, My friend's playing this, and she's so good! awesome work by elgar <3

  • Finished watching all four movements. Multiple times; they were the only things that helped me get through the night, and finish my project.

  • I like at 3:18 when all the cellists (including YYM) are playing as one.

  • @Vehnomous especially when the violas start it off :)

  • Another item for the bucket list: This live concerto by Yo-Yo Ma.

  • i would feel really bad if i were one of those people who had to cough during this

  • I feel a passable contribution to this masterpiece but the recitative doesn't convey the angst and despair that is the hallmark of the Mork recording, in fact I found it rather lifeless. And of course one couldn't mention du Pre and Barbirolli in the same breath.

  • What is so ironic is that the cello YYM is playing is probably the Davidoff which was left to him by Jacqueline Du Pre; then having Barenboim conducting ... it's kinda cool. Like the music lives on to be played by that cello.

  • @parsonste Its the Montagnana, not the Strad

  • @parsonste Its actually his Montagnana

  • this guy must be able to jack off for days with no stop lol

  • It's crazy how much control he has even joy he's moving all over the place.

  • I'd like to see Yoyo playing Tchaikovsky's rococo varitions, why do you deleted them?

  • 3:17 AHHHHHH!!!!!! I just fell off my chair with twitching pleasure. God, i'm obsessed with the power music can have over someone emotionally.

  • Bravo! Eu me emociono a cada vez que ouço! Bravo!

  • BREATHTAKING! OH MAN!!!!!

  • he flips you off at 3:10

  • That's the most sense the last page of this concerto has ever made to me.

  • STOP COUGHING. Damn audience members!

  • @Prismer6 looks like they haven't implemented the complimentary cough drops...yet

  • @1:34-1:45

"So you think you can play huh?"

  • Bravo! I love Mr. Ma's energy!

  • Thumbs uo for everyone who ever tried to performe this movement, too.

  • It really sounds very much like the opening of Gulda's cello concerto at 2:27. Maybe a quotation?

  • i'm not normally a fan of yo-yo's interpretations, but this is so deeply beautiful that I don't think anyone can help but be moved.

  • I wonder if Daniel Barenboim ever gets tired of the Elgar.. lol I love Yo Yo ma.

  • EPIC intro

  • Very good!!!!!!!

  • オーバーアクション気味ではあるが、それが、ヨーヨーマさんの持ち味なんだろうから!

  • a person comes alive when playing cello. when playing the cello your heart , your body , your soul they all become part of the piece you play on the cello thats what makes this beautiful

  • What a grand tune! Amazing how majestic tunes came so naturally to the son of the piano tuner.

  • He gives one hell of an evil to the flute who mucked up at 0:51

  • @lukeywich LOl ur right

  • I forgot to breathe...

  • outstanding composition - and an exquisite performance ... BRAVO!!!!

  • People say that Ma exagerates too much, but he's a musician who's feeling his music. This is a very emotional piece and I think it would be a crime not to put the emotion into this peice that it was meant for, and Ma does a great job of displaying the emotion meant for this piece and gives an absolutely breath-taking performance of this whole concerto. Great job, he doesn't deserve to have people hating on him that can't get on stage and play a fraction of that well. Yo- Yo Ma is the BEST EVER!

  • I have chills

  • unbe - fucking - livable

  • the way yo yo ma exspress himself in his music is truely AMAZINGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!! 60000000000000000000000 thumbs up 4 yo yo ma

  • yo yo ma does jacqueline du pre justice. i wonder how it's like for barenboim, who not only conducted elgar with du pre, but loved her as well

  • Meraviglioso invero

    本当にすてき

    C'est meravilleux

  • MY MIND...!!!

  • He plays with so much passion... he is truly speaking through his cello. I will never see a better cello maestro than Yo-Yo Ma.

  • Simply astonishing! This performance has left me speechless.

  • ... And finally, he came

  • @LoDownDirty Epic win

  • This performance is spectacular very good playing by Yo Yo Ma OMG OMG this is so good this one of th best pieces of music i've ever heard in my life!

  • Oh. My. God.

  • I don't know any word to describe this spectacular performance!

    Incredibly amazing

  • I'm having a cellogasm!

  • @Heeroyui752 cellorgasm :P

  • @Heeroyui752 ew

  • This video of this movement got me through the hardest time. Jacqueline du Pre certainly brought this concerto to life (and she is one of my favorite cellists), but in this performance, Yo Yo Ma makes it without a doubt IMMORTAL.

  • 3:18! All the cellos including Yo-yo are playing the same thing! Cool.

  • Yo Yo Ma...world-class musician - he can play any composer (including jazz & folk) in some sublimely divine level...also a wonderful and charming human being. I played in an orchestra accompanying him on a short Dvorak piece Silent Woods..women orchestra members were in line to talk to him and get his autograph afterwards..he is truly gracious. What a gift. He works for music education in schools as well. Peace & love through the best music possible ...breaks all barriers.

  • de otro planeta

  • starting 03:17, the monster in the theme reveals itself

  • I had a hard time breathing at the end. Stunning!

  • this made me cry. Thank you for posting this.

  • Yo-Yo Ma is not my favorite.....but this is inspiring....

  • The intense sadness of this sublime work always breaks my heart ........

  • isn't kinda sad that only the 1st mvt is really truly well known?!

  • yes, everyone else likes it too... : )

  • Thanks for posting this video, I love this concerto and Yo Yo Ma!

  • 3:15 is incredible. absolutly genius. =) click it.

  • not a comment in over a week? tsk tsk. yo yo ma is amazing

  • man this concert helps me make poems that really rock!

  • A very sweat concerto really cool. YO-YO-MA RLZ

  • A breathtaking performance.

    Thx for upload.

  • 9:18-9:20 sounds very unusual and weird hmmm :/

  • yeah i noticed that too. well noone's perfect, but he comes damn close

  • Yo-Yo Ma's facial expressions are ingenious.

  • yup. his teeth in the 1st mvt...^_^

  • I was afraid he would colapse at the end! He put so much of himself into every note, I was afraid that when he finished the last one, there would be nothing left!

  • 2:25 Elgar gets Grooooovy:)

  • The coolest part is 9:07 when Theme 1 returns!!!!! :D LOVE this concerto!!!

  • Fantastic artistry by YYM. I think the whole orchestra played their butts off. Beautiful work by Elgar. A night to remember. I wish I was there to see it live...

  • Vigor when needed, sensitivity when called for. So much pressure with the bow at the end, but still such an incredible sound! Unbelievable.

  • I love the slow part 5:00 (L)

  • un real! i wish i can buy it on DVD

  • Okay, so as Hume has suggested, tastes are purely subjective and arise from sentiment rather than reason, but to whomever is giving Yo-Yo Ma bad ratings, I suggest their motive is jealousy rather than critical demerit.

  • hmm 9:19 sounds sorta funky....

  • At 3:33, the cellist at the back loses grip on his cello for a second haha. Not making fun of him but it's fun to notice these type of things.

  • Time to sharpen the ol' endpin.

  • haha, thats happened to me so many times!!! except i usually swear a bit.....

  • Yeah, I get quite frustrated when that happens to me.

  • im surprised he didn't break bow hair at the end

  • can this be had on dvd somewhere? please tell me yes.

  • I love it at 2:19 when he starts to 'battle' against the violas!! yesh!

  • Truly remarkable.

  • I seen all four. I try to play it and it did not sound good in 1 second in to the song.

  • I've watched all four movements, they've made my day.

  • the fourth movement is my absolute favorite! and yes, they made my day too!

  • @TheBenEEeee I love it when these make my entire week.

  • and SO atractive・・・

i love the coming back 3rd mvmt's theme

    his performance is exellent !

  • There is no other piece out there that pushes the Cello to its limits other than Elgar's Cello concerto.

Yo-yo Ma plays the cello as if it was part of him!! Absolutely amazing!! Such control and techinque!

  • So amazing! I just started learning cello a couple of months ago and Yo-Yo Ma is a constant source of inspiration. If I can become a quarter the player he is, I will consider it a great achievement.

  • As wonderful as this is, see Jacquline Du Pre play the Elgar...she owns it.

  • 4:12... you can barely see his fingers move. I wish I could get myself to be that fast

  • I LOVE IT!!!!

  • Friggin amazing. Chills all over.

  • ¡ Bravisimo !

  • virtuoso!

  • I'm better.

    Haha I wish:D

Maybe if I could live eternally and practiced until the end of my eternal life.

  • wonderful interpretation by the world famous cellist YO YO MA, I do think that he is pretty good at his instrument, only Casals and Rostropovitch might be called superior, specially Casals technique, but yoyo knows how to stand up with the task, wonderful concert composed on october 26, 1919 by sir Edward William Elgar.

  • what??

  • i dont see what youre saying...

  • i just love 3:18 its so great

  • Okay, I think everybody loves the du Pre performance, which will probably always be remembered as the best. But you can't deny that this is an amazing performance. He really does this piece well.

  • Wonderful!

  • I get chills every time! Such a dramatic ending!

  • man the technical part

    4:06- 4:12

  • I still can't believe he memorized all four of these movements.

  • Well essentially all concerto soloists will have their parts memorized. After all, the purpose of a concerto demonstrates the soloist's skills, so that adds to how impressive it is. Not uncommon at all to witness a memorized concerto.
