This concerto must be very special for Barenboim. Especially because, if I'm not mistaken, Yo Yo Ma's playing the cello that once belonged to Jacqueline.
Amazing, Breathtaking, Impressive, Astonishing, Awesome, Magical, Unthinkable, Wonderful, Skillful, Smooth, and Impossible are some of the things I can describe Yo-Yo Mama's playing skills. He is just a genius at cello!
This is my favourite movement in the entire concerto, and Yo Yo Ma plays it with such passion, emotion and vision... It moves me... thank you for this recording.
In my most honest opinion, I do not believe that after watching and listening to the 35+ minutes of the Elgar Cello Concerto that the most amazing fact is how well Yo Yo Ma played the piece, how beautiful the piece is, or even how well the CSO played underneath him, but rather the fact that he memorized the music down to an exact art. Throughout the entire performance did he not appear to make a single mistake, miss a note, or play out of tune, but he also managed to play with so much emotion!
you have more respect for the musician when you know how dedicated they are. Yo yo Ma deserves mad respect because it would take days or weeks even for a master like his self to memorize a song of this caliber and play it so perfectly. definitely a true master among masters . =)
Sir Edward Elgar - Cello Concerto, Op. 85: Mr.Barenboim made an unforgettable recording of this masterpiece with his wife Jacqueline du Pré and the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, in November, 1970...maybe the best cellist of the 20th century...
The cello used by Yo-Yo Ma here, a Stradivarius Davidov is the same.
@ashcello93 Yes, Mr.Ma main cello is a Domenico Montagnana, Venice, 1733, indeed. But it seems to me here is the Stradivarius Davidov, the same used in the recording of the Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and a tribute to Jacqueline du Pré.
Such musical perfection. Whoever said he had a mess-up should post a video of themselves playing. I'm sure they would sound like crap in comparison to this. One of the greatest of all time. Elgar would be proud. (Jacqueline as well)
@xbasket12x Well that my tell us how many people in the world can appreciate fine arts. You need to look for the background and the context. YYM is the best!
What a moving performance, Ma is obviously emotionally moved at the end and so is Barenboim who has a special attachment to this piece as well. Just beautiful, at times it seemed as though a heavenly angel had descended upon Ma connecting him with Barenboim and the orchestra
I feel a passable contribution to this masterpiece but the recitative doesn't convey the angst and despair that is the hallmark of the Mork recording, in fact I found it rather lifeless. And of course one couldn't mention du Pre and Barbirolli in the same breath.
What is so ironic is that the cello YYM is playing is probably the Davidoff which was left to him by Jacqueline Du Pre; then having Barenboim conducting ... it's kinda cool. Like the music lives on to be played by that cello.
a person comes alive when playing cello. when playing the cello your heart , your body , your soul they all become part of the piece you play on the cello thats what makes this beautiful
People say that Ma exagerates too much, but he's a musician who's feeling his music. This is a very emotional piece and I think it would be a crime not to put the emotion into this peice that it was meant for, and Ma does a great job of displaying the emotion meant for this piece and gives an absolutely breath-taking performance of this whole concerto. Great job, he doesn't deserve to have people hating on him that can't get on stage and play a fraction of that well. Yo- Yo Ma is the BEST EVER!
This video of this movement got me through the hardest time. Jacqueline du Pre certainly brought this concerto to life (and she is one of my favorite cellists), but in this performance, Yo Yo Ma makes it without a doubt IMMORTAL.
Yo Yo Ma...world-class musician - he can play any composer (including jazz & folk) in some sublimely divine level...also a wonderful and charming human being. I played in an orchestra accompanying him on a short Dvorak piece Silent Woods..women orchestra members were in line to talk to him and get his autograph afterwards..he is truly gracious. What a gift. He works for music education in schools as well. Peace & love through the best music possible ...breaks all barriers.
I was afraid he would colapse at the end! He put so much of himself into every note, I was afraid that when he finished the last one, there would be nothing left!
Fantastic artistry by YYM. I think the whole orchestra played their butts off. Beautiful work by Elgar. A night to remember. I wish I was there to see it live...
Okay, so as Hume has suggested, tastes are purely subjective and arise from sentiment rather than reason, but to whomever is giving Yo-Yo Ma bad ratings, I suggest their motive is jealousy rather than critical demerit.
So amazing! I just started learning cello a couple of months ago and Yo-Yo Ma is a constant source of inspiration. If I can become a quarter the player he is, I will consider it a great achievement.
wonderful interpretation by the world famous cellist YO YO MA, I do think that he is pretty good at his instrument, only Casals and Rostropovitch might be called superior, specially Casals technique, but yoyo knows how to stand up with the task, wonderful concert composed on october 26, 1919 by sir Edward William Elgar.
Okay, I think everybody loves the du Pre performance, which will probably always be remembered as the best. But you can't deny that this is an amazing performance. He really does this piece well.
Well essentially all concerto soloists will have their parts memorized. After all, the purpose of a concerto demonstrates the soloist's skills, so that adds to how impressive it is. Not uncommon at all to witness a memorized concerto.
