Yeah lets get government in a position of the one industry that has thrived because government hasn't been involved. Fuck you Fraken, give it 2 years & the internet connection will be far more expensive & far fewer jobs in the industry.
@phantomf4j As much as you are correct, the "rich" could easily succeed in taking our self-declared rights. The internet is part of our society, there is no denying it. It has become part of speech, religion, and press. So shouldn't it be free from discrimination? and accessible? I don't want the government regulating the internet, but i certainly don't mind them telling companies that they can't decide what gets through their tubes and on my screen.
Al Franken speaks sensibly and coherently upon an important topic for a good long while! As far as I can tell, any arguments against him would have to involve some kind of outright worship of greed.
Right, so you want corporations deciding which websites you get to view, and how fast they run. You must love fascism, no wonder you're most likely a republican.

@yodoc200 The burden of proof is on the accuser. Show us one shred of evidence that doesn't come from a wild-eyed conspiracy theory. The telecom industry is the ONLY government sanctioned monopoly that isn't heavily regulated or publicly owned. And their lobby manages to write all the regulations themselves to enhance their profits at your expense. We vote for representatives, not telecom CEO's. Which one do we have more control over?
@ismeme: Sorry, but you're the one who is misinformed. "Net Neutrality" is a carefully-chosen name for putting the internet under government control by the FCC. If you believe for one minute that this won't lead to censorship, and worse -- the prosecution of people putting out ideas and opinions in opposition to the current government administration, then you're being foolishly naive. The big telecom corporations aren't going to censor us, the government wants to do that.
@yodoc200 Please cite evidence in support of your claim that "Net Neutrality is a carefully-chosen name for putting the internet under government control by the FCC". Your opinion doesn't count.
Can anyone explain the whole "First Amendment" arguement. Based on every article I have read as well as seen such as this, Net Neutrality is about preferential treatment on content which is different from actually different from restricting speech. I do not like the idea of major ISP's to make my searches for content more restrictive, however what do you think happens when you do a Bing or Yahoo search (sponsors who pay more and get their links first). In other words It's already here.
@Arrezism If a telco can decide whether they'll let visitors get to your site and if so how much that access will cost, that is curbing your free speech.
Net Neutrality means keeping the internet open as it is.
"Net Neutrality" has nothing to do with the First Amendment. It's all about sending the First Amendment through the shredder, and censoring the internet with the specific agenda of quieting the voices of those opposed to the liberal, socialist, "progressive" agenda. It's about consolidating the power of the elite ruling class and not allowing the average citizen to have anything to say against it.
@yodoc200 You're seriously misinformed and should stop listening to RW spin. Net Neutrality means leaving the internet alone - no new regulations or powers, no censorship.

Franken is wrong. Government control is NOT freedom. Giving full control of the internet to the FCC is... how to say this... oh yeah, FUCKING INSANE!!!
Please liberals, I beg you, for the love of god, don't do it.
@YoungSpotUBrock By restricting companies, the fcc will then get the power to restrict the internet. It's just a ploy to give more regulating power to the feds Atleast we can vote with our dollars, but we don't get to elect the fcc, and our presidents are no longer elected their selected. Cass Sunstein said we should "tax internet conspiracies theories," Google itself is already in an NSA partnership, so when we ask the government to protect us from the corps., there is no diff. between the 2.
@ShatterNWO You CAN NOT vote with your dollars if there is no meaningful competition in the telecom industry. The cable company doesn't give two shits about their competitors when those competitors can't break into more than a combined 15% market share. This is why regulation is needed. This is why all your other utilities are either strictly regulated or publicly owned.
@saper321 Are you a troll or just stupid? The Google-Verizon (which you can read for yourself anywhere you get your news) legislative frame work submitted to the congress is what contains language that would do away with Net-neutrality.
Net-neutrality = Keeping the internet AS-IS.
You probably become Anti-Oxygen if you heard liberals liked breathing.
@xp19375 "Corporations can only control us if they have the help of the government." Read a history book to find out how wrong you are. I suggest starting with Child Labor, which was a horrendous problem that the states did little or nothing to stop until the fed gov't stepped in. Bottom line, corporations can indeed control the people, always have done and will always try to do so.
net neutrality 101 for those retards who think it's a leftist socialist plot to take over the internet : if ya like the internet the way it is and like getting equal access to different content providers, then you're enjoying the rewards of the net neutrality already in progress. profit driven corporations want to hijack the internet and limit your equal access unless content providers can pay whatever price they demand destorying net neutrality. much like toll gates on the internet. dig?

Al Franken is a socialist douche bag commie fruitloop. Only fools want the government getting involved and censoring the internet. This country was founded on capitalism not on socialism or Communism. These anti business progressives wonder why the economy is tanking? It is because of their regulations. There is zero competition in government and no reason to cut wasteful spending.
@hawkermustang, OBVIOUSLY you have NO idea what this issue is about then.
This is NOT about censoring the internet! The exact opposite, to a degree.
This is about PREVENTING corporations from censoring the internet themselves.
This is about PRESERVING the openness, equality, and freedom we have on the internet.
I've been following this issue since it's inception years ago, and I've seen people tricked into thinking this issue is about government control. You've been fooled by the opposition.
@NikoKun They tell you that BS when their selling there Gov. regulation to you. Latter you will find out that they just screwed up the internet, made it cost more, and censored who they want. Maybe you and I. I don't have any problem with the internet and I don't want our socialist gov. screwing with it.
@hawkermustang Net Neutrality means leaving the internet exactly as it is. No new power or regulations, no censorship. The corporations are the ones telling you the gov't wants to change things when THEY'RE the ones who do, and will if Net Neutrality fails. Stop doing the telcos' work for them.
@ismeme If Franken thinks this is a good idea, then it is a very bad idea. Franken is a socialist douche bag who stole the election to get elected. Stop doing Vladimir Putin's work for Obama administration.
@ismeme And your spewing the same old LW extremist bs. Wake me up when you're proud to be an American. Or when you have joined the military. You could join a Jim Jones type cult to find your socialist utopia.
@hawkermustang Notice that anyone who disagrees with a RW extremist automatically has their "patriotism" questioned and is equated with the ancient RW extremist definition of the left which Sen McCarthy (R-WI) used to destroy lives until his colleagues censured him in 1954.
FYI I proudly served in the military during Reagan. I understand what being American is as I'd never question your patriotism just because we disagree. Your intellect and integrity are completely different matters however.
You "don't have any problem with with the internet" AS IT IS RIGHT NOW.
But the huge point here is that IT WILL NOT REMAIN AS IT IS NOW, if we don't act to do something to protect it FROM CORPS.
The ISPs and corporations involved here are going to take away WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE, by gradually process. They will start making websites pay for a good connection to it's users.
This means ISPs will filter/censor out those sites who don't pay!
This is NOT about the government creating a fake issue to try and gain control and censor the internet. Net Neutrality WOULD NOT EVEN ALLOW THEM TO DO THAT!
This issue has come up, and has become a major issue by now, BECAUSE we've already seen these things START to happen!
The small starter steps have already taken place, and bigger even worse plans by ISPs are in the process!
Net Neutrality is meant to simply keep things THE SAME WAY THEY ARE NOW. To protect the internet AS IT ALREADY IS!
OBVIOUSLY YOUR A MORON! This is all about censoring the the internet. This is all about the government controlling and censoring the internet. You have been following this issue for years since it's inception, yet you are still stupid. Al should stick to telling corney jokes. I will worry about the corporate bogy man when I see him. Until then then the gov. scares you pusses into further government control.
@hawkermustang, I'd like to see you show any proof as to how a good net neutrality regulation could possibly be used by the government to do anything other than tell an ISP not to charge websites for access to their customers. -_-
That's the only element of it, that we want. I see no way in which that could be abused.
@hawkermustang *sighs* This always happens when someone calls another person a moron, it never fails. *you're = you are a moron.
p.s. who do you think pays for the lobbyists and gives large campaign contributions, not to mention all of the other shady perks given to politicians. It isn't Santa Claus.
@NikoKun Could you send me a message which explains this video: watch?v=DdFctQxehW0 I'm trying to fully understand what exactly this Internet preservation Act by Cliff Stearns means and I don't quite get it with all these twisted words I am finding everywhere. I would really really appreciate it if you could, thanks.
So many people have such a knee-jerk reaction to support Net Neutrality.
All companies treat each packet (including hardcore pornography and possibly illegal child pornography) identical. Economically it is not viable for an ISP to treat packets unequally, they have neither the time nor the resources.
It is a fallacy to believe free speech entitles you to a medium from which to speak. The FCC regulated TV for the same reasons. Now we have government and corporate controlled television.
Net Neutrality was thankfully beaten down. Another attempt by the "professional left" to control free speech and dissent. We need more Al Frankens on Tv and not the govt!!!
@BeeAre :an attempt by leftists to gain control over the internet. They have always been after it since they cannot succeed against the conservatives one on one. They want to control the content in all the media to thwart the success of free speech and dissent of those that do not agree with their progessive radical socilalist agenda advocated by the vile and disgusting late Sual ALinsky.
@BeeAre Don't listen to uzimodem. Net Neutrality means leave the internet as it is, without telco or gov't interference. Research Net Neutrality for yourself. Wiki has a good explanation of it and you'll find it's the exact opposite of what uzimodem and others here are trying to make people believe.
@uzimodem You have evidence to the contrary? Then by all means, cite it. Show us the gov't plans to "control the content in all the media to thwart the success of free speech and dissent".
@uzimodem I don't understand. How are the leftists going to control the internet if we "maintain" Net Neutrality? The Internet apparently "has" it now... The last time I heard about it, a senator (Lieberman, I think?) introduced a bill to allow the president to shut down the Internet whenever he felt the need was urgent, and people cited this as a blow against the idea of Net Neutrality. What you're saying confuses me. :(
@BeeAre :the libs and socialists always use innocent sounding "monkiers" to hide their true intent. They want to control the internet to stifle speech and dissent, primarily that of the conservatives. It is not new news.
@uzimodem That's what's so confusing! :( They argued against giving Barack Obama the power to control the internet because it would be against Net Neutrality! You would think liberals would want to give a liberal president direct control of the internet if what you're saying is true. I wish I understood this issue. :( :(
@thoxbui I totally agree. The man's view on the internet is fascinating. Apparently it's a series of tubes and if they get full it gets harder for your data to smudge through [I'm not sure what it all means, it's all so very technical].
I've been so appalled by the Dems' continuing spinelessness and apparent blindness to the world most of us actually live in. They react like the crazy things Repubs hold forth should be taken seriously. They should be laughed at, called out like this. We're no longer just going backward decades but now CENTURIES! Sen. Franken is one of our few sane politicians, telling it like it is and making Sen. Wellstone proud! Please, MORE of this! And thanks for your courage, Al!
President Eisenhower, in the final speech of his presidency, warned his fellow Americans about the steady and growing control of our democracy by the corporate and military and industrial groups.
Clearly, Senator Franken understands this as do many of us. Sadly, almost no national politician is standing up and speaking out about the danger and speaking out about stopping the corporate control of our democracy.
Sen. Al Franken is one of the handful of congressmen that work for people and for ethical causes. It's very sad how corrupt our government has gotten but the system is nearly 100% broken.
@aziansn4k3 Yes, both legislative houses together are called "congress" in a loose sense, but congress is mostly understood to mean the House of Representatives.
From a dictionary: Congressman -- The noun has one meaning:
Meaning #1: a member of the United States House of Representatives Synonyms: congresswoman, representative
To all you anti-government types you are on the wrong side of this:
Governments can be tyrants. Companies can be tyrants. People can be tyrants. I want to be certain I have access to the information I need to decide which is which at any given point in time and you should too.
We need more Al Frankens in government as well as in boardrooms. Private business with a conscience is win-win. A shame that Vergoogle is oblivious to this fact. Guess we're just have to going to have take what's right and force feed it down their greedy throats.
The most important service the Constitution provides is the limitation of power. If the powerful businesses monopolize the internet, the Constitution is subverted. Net Neutrality must be upheld.
@FireLineStudios The UpTake is a non-profit citizen journalism organization. They're organized & run in a very similar fashion to a local Public Access station. In other words, they have a skeleton staff, most of the videotaping & editing is done by volunteers and they are funded with donations from the public.
If you want to VOLUNTEER to help them, I'm certain they'd be glad to have the assistance. If you're looking to get paid, it's not very likely.
Say whatever you will about Al Franken - He is an extremely intelligent, astute, and important protector of the rights of the individual. I am so proud of Minnesota for electing him (barely)...He is correct that net neutrality is an important issue for all of us. We deserve equal access to the internet and an equal voice on the internet. The tea baggers have already spoken out against net neutrality, a reminder of their uninformed perspective.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Franken you're a tool. Net neutrality is an important issue but you and your fellow "bought and paid for Senators and Congressmen" allow all kinds of Corporations to do all kinds of crazy crap to the American people. When Big Corporations show up at your doors with money in hand you fold up like bad lawn chairs.
Stop pandering, follow the Constitution, and get out of our lives.
When the poor and middle income people around the world find peaceful resolutions and unite in their efforts to make this a better world for all and one that is not ruled by materialistic values, then this vast make up of civilization will rule once again and the rich will be left slither in their failing and miserable worlds. In other words, peace and unity will one day prevail when money is sincerely no longer an issue. Wishing everyone much peace and hope during these times of change.
Yeah lets get government in a position of the one industry that has thrived because government hasn't been involved. Fuck you Fraken, give it 2 years & the internet connection will be far more expensive & far fewer jobs in the industry.

ShatterNWO 1 year ago
@ShatterNWO You CAN NOT vote with your dollars if there is no meaningful competition in the telecom industry. The cable company doesn't give two shits about their competitors when those competitors can't break into more than a combined 15% market share. This is why regulation is needed. This is why all your other utilities are either strictly regulated or publicly owned.

@saper321 Are you a troll or just stupid? The Google-Verizon (which you can read for yourself anywhere you get your news) legislative frame work submitted to the congress is what contains language that would do away with Net-neutrality.

There is zero competition in government and no reason to cut wasteful spending.
hawkermustang 1 year ago
@hawkermustang, OBVIOUSLY you have NO idea what this issue is about then.
This is NOT about censoring the internet! The exact opposite, to a degree.
This is about PREVENTING corporations from censoring the internet themselves.
This is about PRESERVING the openness, equality, and freedom we have on the internet.
I've been following this issue since it's inception years ago, and I've seen people tricked into thinking this issue is about government control. You've been fooled by the opposition.
NikoKun 1 year ago 25
@NikoKun They tell you that BS when their selling there Gov. regulation to you. Latter you will find out that they just screwed up the internet, made it cost more, and censored who they want. Maybe you and I. I don't have any problem with the internet and I don't want our socialist gov. screwing with it.
hawkermustang 1 year ago
@hawkermustang Net Neutrality means leaving the internet exactly as it is. No new power or regulations, no censorship. The corporations are the ones telling you the gov't wants to change things when THEY'RE the ones who do, and will if Net Neutrality fails. Stop doing the telcos' work for them.

@hawkermustang, Again here's the point:
NikoKun 1 year ago
This is NOT about the government creating a fake issue to try and gain control and censor the internet. Net Neutrality WOULD NOT EVEN ALLOW THEM TO DO THAT!
This issue has come up, and has become a major issue by now, BECAUSE we've already seen these things START to happen!
The small starter steps have already taken place, and bigger even worse plans by ISPs are in the process!
Net Neutrality is meant to simply keep things THE SAME WAY THEY ARE NOW. To protect the internet AS IT ALREADY IS!
NikoKun 1 year ago
OBVIOUSLY YOUR A MORON! This is all about censoring the the internet. This is all about the government controlling and censoring the internet. You have been following this issue for years since it's inception, yet you are still stupid. Al should stick to telling corney jokes. I will worry about the corporate bogy man when I see him. Until then then the gov. scares you pusses into further government control.
hawkermustang 1 year ago
@hawkermustang, I'd like to see you show any proof as to how a good net neutrality regulation could possibly be used by the government to do anything other than tell an ISP not to charge websites for access to their customers. -_-
That's the only element of it, that we want. I see no way in which that could be abused.

@uzimodem What is Net Neutrality? :)
BeeAre 1 year ago
@BeeAre :an attempt by leftists to gain control over the internet. They have always been after it since they cannot succeed against the conservatives one on one. They want to control the content in all the media to thwart the success of free speech and dissent of those that do not agree with their progessive radical socilalist agenda advocated by the vile and disgusting late Sual ALinsky.
uzimodem 1 year ago
@uzimodem That's a disgusting lie and you know it. How much are you being paid to spread this bs on behalf of the telcos?
ismeme 1 year ago
@BeeAre Don't listen to uzimodem. Net Neutrality means leave the internet as it is, without telco or gov't interference. Research Net Neutrality for yourself. Wiki has a good explanation of it and you'll find it's the exact opposite of what uzimodem and others here are trying to make people believe.
ismeme 1 year ago
@ismeme :typical leftist talking points.
uzimodem 1 year ago
@uzimodem You have evidence to the contrary? Then by all means, cite it. Show us the gov't plans to "control the content in all the media to thwart the success of free speech and dissent".
ismeme 1 year ago
@uzimodem I don't understand. How are the leftists going to control the internet if we "maintain" Net Neutrality? The Internet apparently "has" it now... The last time I heard about it, a senator (Lieberman, I think?) introduced a bill to allow the president to shut down the Internet whenever he felt the need was urgent, and people cited this as a blow against the idea of Net Neutrality. What you're saying confuses me. :(
BeeAre 1 year ago
@BeeAre :the libs and socialists always use innocent sounding "monkiers" to hide their true intent. They want to control the internet to stifle speech and dissent, primarily that of the conservatives. It is not new news.
uzimodem 1 year ago
@uzimodem That's what's so confusing! :( They argued against giving Barack Obama the power to control the internet because it would be against Net Neutrality! You would think liberals would want to give a liberal president direct control of the internet if what you're saying is true. I wish I understood this issue. :( :(
