Well they and the Timurids are nigh unstoppable in the open battlefield. Train assassins to kill their family members. Fortify your castles with fully stacked armies. Play the Mongols and Timurids against each other. Isolate them financially by building a mighty fleet and blockading their ports. Don't face them in open terrain unless you have overwhelming numerical superiority. Otherwise good luck to you.
@TheGames754 I found the problem it is becouse i have put all nations in play and not only five(spain, england, france, venecie, hre) so i have reinstaled the game and now it works
Heh, this brings back memories. The last time I played I was the Byzantines, and I was caught up in a 3 way wars in France between Spain, England, and Myself, and in the holylands, the Mongols, Timurids and myself. Needless to say it was an enjoyable climatic battle to the very end in that campain.

I always play with the Turks and they are my nightmare... :( Once I gave a city to Timurids because they are Turk too so I think we can make peace. But guess what did they do? They atack my other cities and i couldnt stop their elephants with my mounted archers... :/
Aside from their Generals, the only hard thing about the Mongols is their Heavy Lancers, only mace/axe cavalry can go toe to toe with them. In VH, An army you use against the Mongols will likely suffer 80%-95% casualties, unlike in Medium where you can use one army to take out 2 of theirs. So play in VH/VH.
just get good armies in your eastern front cities and castles and do the regular "defend the gates while showering them with arrows and catapults" strategy or the "defend the center, set all in loose formation and shower them with all range units" strategy. Let them make the first move. Sending all avaible assasins to kill their generals also helps.
Get up a big army of knights and CHARGE!!! You can drive them off the map. Bring along some lighter horse to give chase...maybe some Alan mercenaries.
Honestly this game is to easy...I only recruit men from one castle and one city, to make the game challenging. And more logical...shouldnt be able to recruit men from a country you just conquered.
i only had to fight them once had a huge armys guarding the boarders and egypyt was a ally and were the came egypt had control over a provine with one rebel provinec in front than the mongols and then me so they iinvad egypt and they decalered jihad i think and took it back massacared a alot of mongols then i moved in and tokk the province
A good way to take the horde down. Everyone who plays this game knows that the armies stay grouped together so they can back each other up in case of attack. I think that you get three or four huge armies together. Make them as tough as ou can. Then strike one army with all three or four armies. If you do it right you can win the battle and scatter about three mongol armies which will be badly beaten and alone. Then you just finish them off one at a time.
took me forever to defeat these guys they have about 1000 men in each original army that arrives and they stay in a group so when you fight you have to fight there reinforcements which is a pain. I had my armiessadow them until I got a decent sized force to attack them they attacked before I was ready but I managed a Heroic victory against them. Luckily I had lots of light calvary to chase down the survivors :)
Im not that good at strategy so i just simple enough took an army to baghdad (where the arrived) i was playing as france and tried to defeat them i seriously weakened them eventuallybut then they cam e back and i lost all my mid east land
lol yeah same. My french heavy infantry and calvary were cut down by horse archers that ARE WAY TO FAST! and there light cav destroyed my crossbowmen and archers
Wow this brings back some fine memories. Was playing hungary and taken most of egyptian lands when the mongols arrived. By that time I had like 30 regions and 30,000 floriin income per turn. First time I fought them I was shocked. FREAKING HELL THESE GUYS ARE TOUGH!!! Took me huge amounts of money and troops, but I won, and also got like 6 max sized elite armies and generals ^^
the second i saw the mongols arriving in my lands, i just went on mustering 4 max armies and killing them asap. didnt work well had huge losses, but in the end of the third time around they come with 4-6 max armies i got them split up and could kill their leaders.
Timurids are worse:D Especially playing with Turks. I was about to conquer Balkans and make some progress into Europe then Mongols came into Anatolia. I had do abandon my campaign and defend my cities. After balancing the situation then came the Timurids. You loose at least 80-90 years to those damn Mongols and Timurids.
The reason they keep coming back is because they don't work like a normal faction, taking their last settlement doesn't destroy them, you need to destroy their entire forces outside of settlements.
i just wait for them to settle on kiev and then besiege them on crusades
i turned most of their cities to catholism
if i play turks Turkish cavalry is nearly as same as mongol (mongol slightly stronger) and to prevent their cahrge i use turkomans(missile 6-meele 7- charge 3) and janissary pikemen
the problem i have with their cavalry is that they come with 3 silver of experience all or at least most of their units so they are like 5 times better than any unit u can have with the turks by the time they arrive
I sent an army (1 general, 4 units of ballista, 4 units of catapult, 2 units of crossbowmen, 2 units of archers, and 3 units of light cavalry) into an open field against the Mongols. With Papal assistance, I outnumbered them 2-to-1, but I did take few minor losses. Overall, it was very risky since I had to hold ground while pounding the Mongol cavalrymen with missiles in loose formation. I almost lost my general in that battle, so since then I decided to fight defensive battles with the Mongols.
The best idea is to train weak units, spear ones if possible, and have them attack from the front while elite men flank. if you can plant stakes, plant them, then put spearmen in front of them. Right before the cavalry charge, pull them behind the stakes, then charge out again. It is devistating to the enemy :D
Well the option is only available to elite archers like English Yeomen or Longbowmen, but by the time the Mongols come you should be using only Yeomen or Longbowman archers as England. There are other ranged units that can, but I don't remember off the top of my head.
1) Try not to engage them out in the open. With their horse archers and Mongol lancers, you will risk destroying your army unless you can match theirs.
2) Fight a defensive battle. That means bridge defense and castle siege warfare.
3) Gunpowder weapons and lots of long-range missile troops. Mortars and pavise crossbowmen are preferred because they can fire long range and over castle wall if necessary.
4) Never engage the Mongols alone, get other factions, including your enemies, involved. That means establish good relations with the papal state and call on a crusade against the Mongols. You basically send waves of catholic armies to get their hands dirty with the Mongols.
I love doing that, though if you know what to do there is no need. It does alaways help, though. Actually if you can get your Arabic enemies to Jihaad, that is all the better.
I garrisoned 8 units of pavise crossbowmen, 2 mortars, 3 catapult, 3 units of spear men, and 1 general in a minor city. I defended and repelled 3 waves of Mongol attacks with very little casualties, which was cool. I constantly replaced or retrained any unit suffering from minor losses just to keep them ready for battle.
Nice :D I usually ship in Yeoman archer from england, trebuchet from Spain, and all light infantry and some heavy with a few cavalry once I capture crusade states. It really works well, plus I gain a few more money after those darn 1st turn units are gone!
I haven't waged war against the papal state because I believe he's your best ally until you have dominated the entire map. But in terms of defeating the Mongols, I would use lots of gunpowder weapons. I prefer to let them take few settlements and then devastate them with my gunpowder siege weapons and missile troops. Killing all their generals and family members is also effective.
Yeah, I prefer to send my weak infantry that take up all my money (maybe 3 full armies) and 1 powerful army to fight. I keep them all together, so when there is a battle the 3 weak ones are a Meat Shield to my Heavies. It works really well.
I use town militias as cannon fodders while my peasant and pavise crossbowmen take out the heavily armored troops. I often keep few units of pavise crossbowmen and professional spearmen in the reserve to clear up any potential threat in case my cannon fodder troops faltered. This strategy often leaves the enemy running with some fair amount of casualties with lots of prisoners.
Nice. I usually don't recruit infantry, or deleate them, so I kepe them as fodder while I wait for my heavy cavalry to flank. Depending on the terrain, this can be very deadly :D
I like your strategy, very Byzantine-like tactic. I play the Venetian faction, so not very good cavalry until I get the opportunity to recruit men-at-arms and knights templar. If I was to play the Middle Eastern factions, I would most likely follow your strategy.
Yeah. I like to play as Spanish, English for the west, so Cavalry is usually better then normal. I do enjoy playing as Russia as well. It's fun when Poland, Hungary, and the Mongols along with Turkey all decide to come at me at the same time :D
Yeah Russia rule. I was doing great with them up until the Mongols came- I owned all of West Russia down to Germany. Is it just me or do the Mongols spawn armies? They're so hard! But yeah Russia are good, Portugal are also good. England are decent too.
Yeah, the Mongols spawn armies in I think 2 or 3 waves, so you get the message that the mongols have arrived, then after you beat them off they come again...
I never liked playing as Portugal, don't know why.
And I found England way too easy. By about turn 120 I had all of Europe, up to Russia, and only Spain was remaining with one province. Funny, I never once got excommunicated.
I usually make jerusalem my capital city and pay attention to it more bcuz once ur in the holy land and attack islam factions and get going the pope doesnt mindu occasionally attacking borders
Depending on nation you're playing to begin with, this might create unrest in your former main cities due to the capital being halfway around the world. Personally i prefer kicking the pope out of Rome to make it my Capital city, nice central location imo.

Never fight them fair, either get multiple groups and keep trying to take them, or become a military genious.
I'd stick with the first one ^_^. You might need two or three armies to jsut defeat one group. Remember, you're just weakening them.
