You'd have to be mental to fight Bobby Hull. He was a great hockey player but, if you seriously pissed him off, expect a beating. His brother Dennis is a great guy too. Back in the years when I actually cared about hockey.
I was at this game. Reggie Fleming and Bobby Hull were friends and old Blackhawk teammates. Fleming was a "policeman" for Chicago Cougars at this time, and had to respond to Hull's elbow. Look carefully, and you'll see Fleming take a dive as the fight starts. Hull got cut when they collided initially. Fleming respected Hull greatly. And Hull knew Fleming "dove."
This is exactly why the NHL needs to reduce the the league by at least four teams. You won't have as many goons. Bobby Hull is not a goon, but the douche he's fighting is a goon.
Hull was the total package -- he did it all including fighting which he didn't need to. but it just shows the extent of his importance and talent. Fleming on the other hand was a big dirty goon who countless time cheapshotted guy when he didn't need to as he was tough on his own. but it just shows the difference in talent.
Hahaha...Bobby Hull drops a MEAN elbow. I wonder if they're gonna have him run security at the sports legends challenge as well, it looks like he could handle it!

The WHA was a big rip off. The cougars were nothing but a bunch of thugs and crybabies. All the cougars did was raid the NHL and didn't develope their own talent. The owners were worse than the white ux, cubs, blackhawks, bears etc.
It is absolutely shameful that we can't find any Bobby Hull footage in his glory days with Chicago yet we have 50 million fights from every era posted on youtube. Two leagues should be created. A garage league for guys like Brashear to make you tube goon videos for the grade 6 viewers. The other league a highly skilled league with no more than 12 teams,no fighting, less goalie equipment. The league would be so good that you wouldn't need constant power-plays and fighting to maintain interest.
Why can't there be a happy medium? Like in the good old days, before the Iron Curtain came down and the NHL became 75% Russian, Czech, & Slovakian players. And that twit Gary Bettman came along and ruined hockey. One of the most entertaining games I ever attended was a night circa 1983 in St. Louis, The Great One had four goals and an assist, and there were a couple of heavyweight fights.
Hockey hasn't been the same since the Jets left. The only pleasure I get out of hockey these days is when the Oilers get the s*** licked out of them!!!
Ballsillie wants a team in southern ontario (hamilton, kitchener-waterloo). Ottawa is northern ontario and quite a distance from Toronto and hamilton. I'd like to see a team in winnipeg again, but it won't be Ballsillies team.
Well, RIP the Jets but let's hope that a team relocates to Winnipeg in the near future. New arena, a little small but Winnipeg is such a good hockey town.
Hell yeah. There are WAY to many teams nowadays in the NHL. The level of talent has become very watered-down. I mean come on, teams like the "bluejackets" and "thrashers"? Do we really need those ridiculous teams in cities that are small? It's just a waste. Also the instigator rule is total bullshit too. Fights are a part of hockey, and always will be. It definitely dilutes the game by taking it away.
Hey it's cool that you're a fan of the Jackets, I'm just saying that with the addition of all the new teams, the level of talent has gone down from what it was in the past. I mean, could you imagine if there was still only 6 teams? They would all be all-star teams. With 32, you get a lot of guys who normally wouldn't be in the NHL, but they need them to fill the rosters. The influx of Europeans and Russians has helped a lot though.
actually DLF, your points are valid and well taken. The same can be said for Major League Baseball. I say, we get rid of the Florida teams before my Jackets. Something about ice hockey in the Sunshine State that doesn't smell right.
good old time hockey. hahaha. WHA paid bobby hull 1.2 million for 5 years. he went there because chicago had their heads up their asses and didn't offer him anything close to that. their wallets were too tight and it ended up costing chicago organization near a billion dollars in losses for ticket sales and revenue. NO THINKING with these tight wads
Talk about genius, Hull made a shitload more than the NHLers by going to the WHA. When the WHA folded there is an interview of him practically laughing his ass off because he got PAID!
Yes he did make more but all hockey players benefited moneywise from the birth of WHA. Just simple supply and demand. In six years the number of major league hockey teams increased from 6 to 28. Better than a four fold increase.
LMAO No, he wasnt a trained boxer, but does it matter? He fell without being hit, so its irrelevant if he was a trained fighter or not. If he was trained, his balance was horrible. Many hockey fighters were trained boxers. McSorely fought golden gloves, Probert and Kocur trained with the kronk boxing team in Detroit, Brashear trained in boxing...it doesn't matter. Flemming fell without being hit here.
Why is it,that everybody has to make reference to the amount of hair on a guys head everytime his name is mentioned?Or make comments about his personal life, when they know absolutely FK ALL about what they're flappin about. All those who have perfect hair, and perfect lives, who have NEVER done anything wrong, line up to respond to this.I'd really like to hear from ANYONE who fits that description.
Perhaps it's because Bobby Hull wore a toupee, and beat his wife? His wife was Sylvia Kuzyk, a television anchor, who had to wear huge amounts of make-up to hide the bruises that Hull inflicted on her.
Hey Sixchomp you have no clue what you are talking about. You want to know how i know because his daughter is telling me right now. His wifes name was not silvia but his actual wife did have to wear tons of makeup to cover up the bruises.
Bobby Hull was NEVER married to Sylvia Kuzyk. I believe his wife's name was Joanne. Sylvia wa a weatherperson in the 70s and still is. She was NOT married to Hull.
Rumours of 'battles' between Bobby and his wife are probably geniune, as I heard she was just as much of a handful as he (booze related). That said, he was always a gentleman with the fans and a great ambassador for the WHA and Winnipeg.
My cousin Gord Gallant played in the WHA with the Fighting Saints and others....does anybody have anything at all with Gordy on video...Plz contact me on You Tube my handle is Krokus69...........Thanks
As talented as he was Bobby Hull was a miserable prick. Beating his wife was probably the nicest thing he ever did so you can imagine what he was like.
The league folded in 79.These guys were older mostly ex-NHLers or minor leaguers.Hull must have been between 34-40 years old as that was the time he played for the Jets in the WHA.You have to remember that prior to the WHA NHLers were drafted at 19 years of age and most didn't make the big clubtill later on so most players were in their mid-twenties by the time they made the big club.
Hockey sure did have a lot of premature bald guys back in the days; especially the goalies. With a few premie grays to spare.
Was hockey that stressful? Or did a lot of players happen to have weak hair genes? Bobby Hull had to be in his early 30s at that time, so it was pretty quick. Unfortunately the gene wasn't passed to Brett, unless it is slow-acting, masked, or there might be some good hair jobs happening.
thats my dad. and yeah WHA did go under, to bad Bobbie and my dad tried to make it in the league but it folded in 77 I believe. I didnt see any blood on my dad, but Bobby got a few nice shots in.
Chris, if it werem't for guys like your Dad, Whitey Stapleton, and Ralph Backstrom the Cougars would've been gone sooner then they were. They should've been in the league longer. I loved going to the games.

Put the goons in one league and the talented hockey stars in another league. Who would starve? The goons are feeding off of a great sport.
ycanada 2 years ago
There are only a handful of "goons" around anymore. Some teams don't even have one. Guys like Brashear are nearly extinct.

yeah, most of the "goons" can actually play hockey so they are refered to as "agitators"
