Great record!! What a perfect example of how Pops taught the Henderson band to swing...the difference between this great Don Redman arrangement and the earlier Shanghai Shuffle is like night and day. Fletcher Henderson was an over-rated band leader whose orchestra sounded hardly any different from the saccharine whinyings of most larger orchestras on the east coast...until the New Orleans cats taught them to swing. He put down Louis, but Louis lifted his band to the stars.
In the famous "battle of the bands" between Bix & Tram in the Goldkette Orchestra and Henderson's band at the Roseland, even Rex Stewart, who took over Armstrong's chair that year, agreed the "those little white boys kicked our xxxxx"."
So Bix and the boys could hold their own with anyone.
Excellent piece of work. So representative of the era. All of the greats had their own styles and different things to recommend them. They are collectively known as "The Greats" for a reason. Love this.
This is sweet!

Bix and the boys stand back and let the true masters through

My favorite parts are the clarinet trio, requiring Hawkins and Redman to double up.

Stupid comment about Bix and Tram. Different style altogether. They (including Louis) are all jazz greats equally.

The start of swing - 29. May 1925.... simply great !!

No... this isn't swing. It's two-beat, and swing is four beat.
This is the roots of "Trad" --
The end starts to swing... and then they quit.
