  • What if your hallux rigidus is caused by flat feet? My condition was only diagnosed last week after my arches apparently fell in pregnancy five years ago. My bone is now affected and I have been told to walk with insoles in my shoes which slightly elevate the big toe. Will this work for me?

  • I have had an operation a month ago to get rid of my bunion which causes me pain. Also I have hallux valgus. Problem is that after surgery my big toe cannot bend backwards anymore (flex). But I don't have hallux rigidus because on the x-rays you can see the space between the joints. Could this treatment help me also? The joint feels stuck. I have only pain when it bends too far back when (normal) walking. So sorry to have had an operation but now I have to deal with this. Can you help?

  • I would scream in horrible pain if anyone did this to my bad toe.

  • what if the joint has become stiff with bony prolifaration of the MT head? can manual therapy help? i'm suffering from this and i'm a dancer. it's really crucial for me to deal with this. i'm planning to have an arthroscopic removal of the bone spur in 2 months before i decide to go for full surgery. my doctor said i'm too young to do a cheilectomy (26 years old). any advice would be appreciated. i'm trying to do manipulation on my own.

  • @nullValue0 did you have surgery? Im 26 as well, and always had a somwhat stiff big toe, and stubbed it often playing sports, but recently stubbed it and the pain didnt go away. manipulation on my own helps, but it isnt completely healed, and the tendons are sore surrounding the joint. is this your experience? have you tried noninvasive treatments before surgery? hope everything went well

  • hi gary, did your patient have popping of the big toe... my big toe pops alot... just wondering if she had alot of popping ?

  • I have hallux rigidus - x ray shows narrow joint space and dorsal, lateral spurring. I am a physician myself, but had been told that I would need surgery. The massage and traction has been really helpful. I have been doing this for a month and have a better range of motion and much less pain. I also started wearing MBT shoes, which have a rocker bottom that greatly reduces stress on the toe joint. Thank you Gary.

  • My partner has been complaining of pain in his toe. He can't move it and it hurts when he walks or run. I can't really tell what's wrong with him because he didn't see a doctor. He found this video and he made we watch. We tried it and I can honestly tell you that he felt a lot better and even he, himself cannot believe. Thank you gazzamoller for sharing this video.

  • HEY COME CHECK OUT MY WIERD FOOT SCAR...TYPE IN FOOT SCAR...

  • I'm 15 and I think I have hallux limitus in my left big toe. It has gotten considerably worse since the beginning of 2010 as I can only bend the joint to about 130 degrees, compared to my right big toe where I can bend it 90 degrees. I have tried to forcibly bend it upwards with my hands but it only results in pain in the joint. Hampering my running and recently my walking. I can't live just sitting around all the time I'm depressed. How can I fix this please I'm desperate please please.........

  • @julsmul hi im getting an education in foot care... first thing to do is quit high heels and make sure your shoes actualy fitt. then get a rubber-band. about 5 cm diameter and 5mm width put it over your toe at the outer joint (where it bends) then cros your leg over the other and use your other big toe to gently pull your limitus down. keep the strech for 5-10 minutes at a time a few times a day. It wil take some time for any improvement but it should come.

    and use streaching exercises.

  • @Mewkitt I haveproblems with bending my toe down, but bending it up is what's concerning me. Does this exercise still apply to me?

  • @julsmul Hi i would still try to bend it downwards we use it in state-authorised klinik's as treatment gently-forse the joint into place and apply mild pressure it should be onlu as painfull as a regular strech like when U have done a work out. in time it should move more and more. dont know if u are a boy or girl but if a girl. u sholud not wear high heels. as it will worsen Ur condition. also tight shoes can worsen and make it rigid. u have to be able to move Ur toes inside Ur shoes!

  • Another thing... flip-flops also cause this condition.

::: It is the "base joint" u must use exercises on.. (the joint pointing up-wards.)

another exercise we use is to bend all your toes backwards at the same time.. do it while sitting. - place Ur foot at the floor with the part that usualy points up-ward -pointing down, and then move Ur foot forwards so u get a nice even streach to all your toes. hold it for a minut at a time a few times a day.

    Hope this will help u:)

  • @Mewkitt I went to the pediatrist and he said I have a bone spur which is limiting my movement. He said the pain is caused by a whole nother problem in my joint where I must have stubbed it and cracked the cartelige leading to the beginning stages of authritis. Does your excercise still apply to me? Also my toe began to get better but has recently gotten worse the more I have bent my toe down.

  • @julsmul that sounds painfull... well i think you should listen to your pediatrists advice (what ever it is) i bone spur is the result of a problem that have evolved over a perriod of time.

  • Do you know La Feet Tabi Shoes? They are preventive Anti Hallux Valgus therapeutic shoes. Check them out!

  • For those of you that have used Gary's manipulation technique, had you been to a podiatrist first? If so, what did they say was the cause of your hallux limitus?

  • how do you know u have hallux rigidus i had turf toe that was a couple months ago but my joint is stiff and frequently swells

  • Why do you have to talk so long before you could possibly tell us one thing we want to here?

  • I got this from doing Ukrainian Cossack dancing, now i this lump at my toe joint. I got it when i was 15 only. Im 16 now, im glad i found this im gonna try n use it:)

HOllux limitus is such a pain to have..i cant do many things at the mo. So depressing:(

ugh i just want to use my feet freely again. Walk like i used to, run like i used to, dance like used to.

  • How can I find a trained professional to do this for me in Las Vegas, NV? I have functional hallux limitus and have tried orthotics, stretches, etc..

  • 29 Years ago I kicked a soccer goal post. I thought I sustained a hairline fracture. 29 years of pain. I went a podiatrist. He said replace the joint or perform a cheilectomy. Insurance deductible is $2,500.00. I tried Mollers method. The pain was not excruciating. My wife pulled hard but twisted slowly. The pain is gone. It feels like I had the operation and it has healed. I believe the joint was being irritated by the bone. When it was pulled and manipulated the joint had room to expand.

  • This worked for me. The first few times it hurt during and after. I could feel the grating movements in the joint. After two days I could move the first and second joint on its own..

You have to work through the pain. I just came from the shopping mall and no pain when I walk

    Thank you very much.

  • and good work, gary ! thanks for the post

  • glad i found this. i had actually been doing something like this myself... yeah it HURTS... sometimes a LOT. but i really find relief after. and i am NOT going for having this thing freeze up on me: at least keep moving.

and surgery is a last resort... ALWAYS!!!

  • woggy - yes it can

  • Does this procedure work on hallux rigidus caused by a dorsal bunion on the metatasal, the joint space is still there

  • Does this works with Hallux Valgus?

theres another similar way instead of surgery?

  • Don't believe this video. If you truly have Hallux Limitus or Rigidus NO AMOUNT of pulling and bending will fix it. Impossible. I've dealt with this for years. Just look at your x-rays and see how the joint has completely filled in, reducing the range of motion greatly. It's not even shaped like a joint anymore. THIS IS NONSENSE. Get the joint TRULY FIXED by an orthopedic doctor... by the way this woman OBVIOUSLY DID NOT HAVE HALLUX LIMITUS OR HALLUX RIGIDUS. No swelling, no pain. Silly

  • Hallux Limitus/hallux rigidus: Is there is nothing in between complete loss of joint and a perfectly healthy one? Of course there is! All cases are somewhere along that sliding continuum. Yes, the woman in the video does not have rigidus: This is a toe AFTER several weeks work. I agree she never had true rigidus.

What is there to lose in trying this procedure? Tell me the possible harm? Have you tried this procedure on your patients?

I was first introduced to this 20 years ago. It works.

  • To lose? Well, I'm guessing he's not doing this for free. Plus your time. If you're going to say that, then come to my office and I'll rub peanut butter on your joints 3X a week @ $150 a pop. What is there to lose by trying MY procedure? Tell me the possible harm of my Peanut Butter treatment? Have YOU tried the PB Rub? He's NOT a real doctor, he's a chiropractor, so OF COURSE he is going to push (pun intended) what he is allowed to do rather than what he isn't. Just like a voodoo doc..

  • @gazzamoller very good for post op hallux rigidus surgery. I had this surgery two weeks ago- and I am now walking in a regular shoe, although that is due to alot of help with pancreatic enyzmes which help injuried or manipulated tissue heal rapidly along with increasing circulation- and pushing out waste matter in the blood stream. You video is very helpful, I am a massage therapist and I do this twice a day, plus icing it down at night slightly elevated for about an hour. So great video

  • @gazzamoller so why did you say she had ridius then?

  • Viewers should go to my website and read the dozens of articles relating to this video. Google Search "gary moller foot pronation" and you will get most of these. You will also gather that this procedure works for many who were given no other option than surgery. Most cases of "Sore Big Toe" are not the extreme that zyzy describes. These will respond well to this procedure especially when backed up with nutrition interventions.

  • it's probably not great to do this when it's acutely inflamed, but i'm gonna try that now it's a little better

  • dont hate that urs cant be fixed

  • Zizyphus99 is correct. You cannot manipulate a hallux rigidus joint better. This video is straight up a promotion to get someone to pay xxx.xx amount to get your toe moved around by gary moller who is not a Dr. I am sure you have some fine supplements you could probably sell people too?

I have some snake oil you can use for chain lube on your mountain and road bike there Gary. It will make you ride 10x's faster than your friends.

  • Comment removed

  • @zizyphus99 Maybe your toe is too deteriorated to benefit. I definitely have hallux rigidus by x-ray and clinical findings, and the manipulation has made an enormous benefit.

  • @zizyphus99 you think this guy is lying or something?

  • I had gotten an injury from being hit by a car (I was a pedestrian) and my shoe fell off none the less I ended up with a foot injury. A few months later, my muscles had not fully healed and I got turf toe from running in the woods with really bad boots (jungle boots for anyone who cares). To tell you the truth, I would rather have 8 minutes of pain a week then not being able to do anything for my whole life. If only it was in NH.

  • I've suffered with this horribly painful condition for more than 10 years.

It's been treated with cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory drugs.

I wish this treatment was available in Toronto.

But I would have to be put under general anaesthetic to have my toe moved like that.

The pain would be excruciating.. I'd end up punching the person doing it as a reflex action.

  • Awesome video, Gary! :)

It makes me wonder, though, if this therapy is a good idea if there are osteophytes causing impingement or joint space narrowing. Thoughts? I would like to present this non-surgical possible alternative to my podiatrist, but I'd like to have my ducks in a row, first.

Also, I think you've got a great website with lots of excellent information. Thanks!

  • See a podiatrist to conform the cause. It may be bunions from poor fitting shoes and/or a condition called hallux valgus

  • Yes, it certainly can. I have used this on many stiff joints with success as have many others over the years. First you should check with your Dr as to the cause of the swelling.

  • Does this procedure work on Hallux Valgus in terms of addressing the deformity?

If not an it address HV in anyway?

  • can thid be done with fingers? i have swollen and ainfull finger joints and im only 14, please let me know.
