I'm from America and speak American English, British English, Estonian, French, Spanish, Icelandic, and Portuguese. Granted, I love other languages and land. I find, once I am able, I will not be living in America. I absolutely hate it.

I feel like Americans are mostly monolingual because it really isn't that necessary to know more than one. Not only is English one of the most widely used (if not THE widely used) language in the business world, but we're not really bordered by a lot of countries with different languages like in say, Europe. We have Canada and Mexico.

I live in Europe so I dont really know, but from what I have heard people in the US are not as stupid, as they are ignorant and lack in general knowlage about the world.( I speak 2 foreign languages and can also comunicate in other 3 simular languages)

I'm from the United Kingdom and even though we don't border with people speaking different languages it's compulsory to learn. Spanish, French and German up until year 9 (13-14 years old.). After that you can either choose to stop learning or continue.

In Europe there are a lot of different languages and other countries are a very short distance. You can get on a train in Germany and be in France in a few hours, so you need to know many languages. The U.S. only has one neighboring country that isn't English speaking.
