  • Only considering banning them after all the injuries and near misses, guess MLB won't ban them till someone gets killed.

  • I bought a maple bat last season, but because I was one of the youngest on the HS team and there were assholes on my team they spent the whole season trying to my bat while batting. Guess what, they failed.

  • i personally love wooden bats rather than aluminum. I hate the fact that using aluminum makes the ball travel further and faster.

  • really who cares? if the player chooses it then there shouldn't be any problem.

And DON'T have any sympathy for that woman... she is by FAR a millionaire now so i'm sure she considers it worth it.

  • @VnRiZFrEsH She didn't get a penny from getting hit with that bat. Read the back of your ticket sometime.

  • maple doesnt break more often... it just breaks into more pieces, so its not like every third ball hit is going to make the bats shatter. and if ur in the stands and get hit by a bat, u probably are a woman who is checking her makeup not someone that is actually watching the game.

  • I'd put maple over ash on my pancakes anyday

  • i use a bamboo bat. its beast and its pretty sturdy. not so conventional i think.

  • y'know i picked up a bamboo bat the other day, it kinda is weird to me. i use a maple for high school

  • Bonds didn't hit home runs just because he changed to maple bats, it's because he did steroids...

  • @1950MercuryCoupe or possibly because he had a training regiment that was more than you could ever do with steroids so stfu since no one "knows he did it".

    god damn trlls...

  • lol what's better a flying bat or broke bat flying?

  • one of the main reasons maple bats are being used now is because the emerald ash borer insect is tearing through ash trees. with so many restrictions regarding those trees it only makes sense to use maple and other wood to replace ash.

  • @tyfishmanholt that bug has been wrecking havoc in the greater chicagoland area the last few years, good point.

  • Let's look at this from an imaginary reverse angle. If broken maple bats could come flying out of the stands at (potentially) any or all of the players, maple bats would be illegal in ten seconds. So it doesn't seem real fair or wise to subject thirty thousand people crowded around the baselines at every game to this same, needless risk.

  • Anything coming from the stands is illegal. Let it be broken ash or maple bats.

  • before games it says be aware of bats balls or players diving/falling/flying into the stands

  • But about the video i agree with what oters r saying i think the handles r too small and barrels are too big, but i think they should go back to ash or just allow bamboo if maple is becomming more dangerous. But i also think people should also pay more attention. Although there was nothing for the Pirates 3rd base coach to do, sometimes theyre just too damn fast.

  • my bad i meant pirates htting coach

  • woo birch bats rule!

  • if someone gets killed by a foul ball are they going to go to koosh balls?? this all is getting just dumb....fans know the risks nascar fans also...why you should "p a y a t t e n t i o n a n d w a t c h t h e g a m e!"

  • its not their fault that the lady jaw got broken, she should have been watching

  • why they dont use bamboo bats i use it for my 18+ wooden bat league and we see homeruns all the time. and they are more durable than maple.

  • Bamboo bats are composed of separate strips of wood which are bonded together. Major League rules state that a league approved bat must be made of one continuous piece of wood.

  • yep and it just jumps off bamboo but can they use composite

  • No, they can't use composite either because that doesn't conform to league rules. There's a new wood bat type out though that's supposed to be non-flaking like maple and light or lighter than ash that you might want to check out called bitch. Not more durable than maple but supposedly the barrel gets harder the more you hit with it.

  • is it bitch or birch

  • birch bat

  • thnx

  • Glad I could help.

  • I think the handles are getting to smaller while the barrels are bigger.

  • i think the main reason they want to check into this more is because this may be the only thing to make bats with soon. so they're going to want to check into other woods and stuff if this doesn't work

  • They could at least mandate wider handles.

  • that bat the hit the lady who broke her jaw at the dodger game almost hit me but i ducked.

  • Imagine that, there are people who rank human safety as a higher priority than trees.

  • I propose Rubber bats! or plastic...wait they're made of trees as well. How bout aluminum, or Lead?

  • For every tree we cut down in America we plant another one to replace it.

  • yea but trees dont grow overnight

  • if you have a problem with cutting down trees...try wiping you ass with plastic toilet paper

  • omg lol fkskiing tht was funny.

  • that i so true that fuckin cheater

  • Not ALL maple bats break in this fashion, and there is a problem with this type of reporting. Bats made to ridiculous proportions and extreme weight drops will break with more frequency whether the bat is made from maple or ASH. Even Longoria sent the barrel of his ASH model i13 sailing towards the BoSox SS last night, but of course ESPN didn't jump all over that because it was an ASH bat. Investigate the models instead of the wood.
