  • Umbrella light gives more contrast than a soft box, your theory is incorrect.

  • Also, I've seen this tutorial about 15 times within the last couple months because I keep coming back to this for reference. One of the best lighting tutorials on Youtube. I really appreciate the time and effort you took in making this tutorial while filming a music video!

  • Hello Tom,

    I love the camera movement you made in this video and I have two questions about it;

  • What was your Iris and shutter speed/ISO if you dont mind me asking.. I'm trying to figure out what kind of exposure is good with that much lighting. Or at least an estimate of what I should be around. Thanks alot! Great vid!

  • hey this is amazing!! can u tell me what render settings you used to achieve this quality on youtube??

  • Thanks for the tip. Do you have anything on outdoor nighttime shooting? Or could you point me in a direction to where? Thanks.

  • where can I find those bulbs you used with I cant seem to find 100W Flourescent bulb around. Will a 23 watt / 100 Watt Incandescent Equivalent do the trick?

  • Just found your channel, great videos. On this one you mix the daylight flourescents with the tungsten red heads right? Did you white balance to the key light and just let the other two go warmer?

  • @thomaswhitephoto That's exactly what i did... except one of the tungsten read heads that I use on the girl I also gelled blue to cool it off a bit.

  • @polcan99 thanks for the great tutorials too! The key light here is the umbrella light, correct? just to be sure...

  • bahaha i bet im the first t notice but at 3:02 if you have a good eye you will see a flag with a marijuana leaf on it :)

  • @TheNairbZurc no your not the only one... its just that nobody cares lol

  • @TheNairbZurc instead of the regular canadian maple leaf! lol!

  • Would you recomend a canon XL1s for a amateur filmmaker ? I have a pentax k-7 but the video can't be longer than 20 or 40 seconds. If not, which camera?

  • @Martindelima97 The XL1 is a great camera when it came out many years ago. Today there are a lot of other better camera's that shoot in HD. The XL1 is standart def... the quality is great but id still recommend getting an HD cam. The Canon XHA1 is a great substitute!

  • do you need a really expensive camera to get really good shot? i have the samsung r10. when i focus on an object or a model the background doesn't blur as much as it should do, how can you make the blur more dramatic?

  • @JARERE1 To get a more blury background do the things I show in tutorial #15 which you can find on my channel youtube.com/watch?v=L0n4pyhx7Dk

  • i like your tutorials!

  • @zalmay85 Canon 7D.... thnx for watching!

  • you get to work with some pretty hot girls

  • Hello,

Great video once again! Did you gel the redhead unit shined on the girl in the background? I notice it's bluish (looks like fluorecent light)... Or did you achieve that color in post production? Thank you!

  • @cellg8 Geled it blue... sorry if I forgot to mention that in the video. I used a standart CTB gel

  • @polcan99

    Thank you, sir! :)

  • Great stuff - you really should make an online school and recoup your efforts :)

Can I pls ask, working to a budget, would you suggest some Soft Boxes or the Umbrella as in this tut to go with my Canon 7d.... i love the slick popping look of RnB Clips, like Tpain and all those guys have popping colours etc :)

Thanks for your time, again awesome vids.

  • Love the rack focusing!

  • Love the rack focusing!

  • can you do something for white balancing?

  • You are awesome. Thank God for your help lmao!! (:

  • Great Vid! in the description you state that you use the Red Head tungsten lights, but where did you get the two flourescent lights from?

  • @rocdamike239 Thnx. glad u like it.... i bought it on ebay. Check the links in the description of the video

  • J. Reyez!!!!!!

  • NICEEEEEEE

  • Hey!! thank you so much for these videos. This is awesome!!! I am learning a lot :)

  • The original lighting for the shot at 0:10 is beautiful too.

  • Hey man, great tut!

Did you gel the left-hand redhead?

  • man ... i dont know how the hell u had patience to do these videos ... most useful stuff on youtube for me ... thanks a ton ... really a novel deed ... :-)

  • Thanks a lot for your tips. We recorded video on Commonwealth Games (unofficially). Looking for more tips on outdoor shooting for a music song.

  • Hey, any chance you can give more details about the umbrella fixture you used? Make/model/link?

  • @ryanmkincaid Yup..its all in the description of the video. Including links to ebay where I bought the lights etc. They're all cheap none brand name though... in fact there is no noticle brand name or model anywhere on the packaging or the items... it just says MADE IN CHINA :)

  • @polcan99 Thanks man, btw, huge fan of your tutorials. Wish you were in NYC a few months ago. We just finished a feature and would have loved to invite you to set one day! Cheers

  • @ryanmkincaid Thanks! would have loved to come out. let me know next time and maybe I'll be able to. I travel around the world quite a bit. and NYC is so close to me that Im there quite often, so u never know. Hope the feature went well. Post some footage once u get a chance so I can see. T

  • @polcan99 What you've done to this video is exactly the look I am trying to get. Tom please tell me what camera you used for this because right now I am in the market for two Canon 5D's but if you tell me something different I'll trust your word. There are videos I need to shoot but I'v been holding off because of cameras and this look you've shown us here.......enlighten me Tom!

  • @los004 I used one Canon 7D with old, manual, Nikon prime lenses. but Canon's will work just as well.

  • whats the name of song, i cant it any more

    good job and thx again

  • wow! thanks man

  • Great video. Thanks for the tips.

  • the original music video was shot with a canon 7D ?

  • @braick13 Yes. All shot with the Canon 7D

  • Thanks for posting all of these tutorials, they have really helped me learn more about lighting and cinematography. You have to make one about the natural lighting that you mentioned in tutorial 2 with your casper and clover video :D

  • thanks a lot for sharing your techniques.

  • ok someone told me if im doing just video with the camera then i can get just as good quality video with the t2i... is that true. have you used it at all

  • @jwalk86 i had the same question for t1i..

  • how do you think the canon 5d does for music videos?

  • @jwalk86 The 5D is also great... but it has the same limitations as the 7D, plus it can't shoot 2.5X slow motion like the 7D. Overall the lattitude is real nice in the 5D. Maybe better than 7D, though for me the sensor is too big. It's way bigger then a 35mm motion picture frame. Which the 7D matches perfectly. So I prefer to work with the 7D, since I come from 35mm film background.

  • do you have color correction tuts

  • @braick13 Yes :) but watch my tutorials the way they were meant to be watched. In order starting from 1.Color correction tuts are 6 and 7 if i remember correctly.

  • Hi, there are umbrella lights available on eBay, a pair of 33" umbrellas with 2X85 watt bulbs each (approx £109); and also on eBay there is a set of 3X800 watt redhead lights (approx. £200). Would these be sufficient to produce a nice look? And also what would be the cheapest way to power these outdoors (without a very long extension cable haha!)?

  • @1simonmatthews Those should be good enough to produce the same look you see in this video. However shooting outdoors is a different challange all together. Specialy if you plan to shoot during the day. Simply cuz the sun is really strong and you need powerful lights that are visable in those conditions. Plus the lights need to be made to withstand wind and rain. etc

  • @polcan99 Thank you so much for your very fast reply. I've always been interested in film and filmmaking but now I've found a new passion in life and I'm going to strive to achieve some nice shots thanks to you. Do you have a tutorial on exterior daytime shooting? I shot some butterflies last week and the pale pink flowers in the shot look burnt out. Is this because I had the camera on auto settings (apart from focus)? The trouble is the shots always look fine in the viewfinder don't they.

  • You are a true professional. This is the first I've seen of your tutorials and I'll definitely subscribe. I'm planning on adding different lighting equipment to my collection bit-by-bit. What would you recommend I start with? Or is it advisable to start off with several? Cheers!

  • @1simonmatthews I'd get a set of tungsten lights like the readheads i use in this tutorial and some soft light source, like a kinoflo or any softbank diffuser or an umbrella. Then experiment. however lighting outside it usualy expensive, since u need high watteg lights, usually HMI Pars that cost thousands of dollars and need expensive power generators to plug into. I cover that in one of my tutorials title HMI Par lights. good luck!

  • @polcan99 Thanks man. I have another question now! Do you have a tutorial on colour correction usage? I just had a brief look in Premiere Pro 2 and there's a whole lot of pulldowns with slide adjusters etc. WOW! Which colour corrector effects do you use? I normally use the colour balance option in the Adjust folder but would like to take it further.

  • @1simonmatthews Yes :) but watch my tutorials the way they were meant to be watched. In order starting from 1. I have a few videos where I explain color correction and then show you exactly how to do it in your application without the use of any plugins.

  • @polcan99 That's absolutely fantastic, you're a top bloke. I'll definitely be sitting back with a cuppa and watching all your tutorials from start to finish. Thanks once again.

  • Hey polcan, what is the artist and song name?

  • @jacksonofalltrades His name is Jreyez. You can see the finished music video I did for him by following the link in the description of the video

  • Thanks for your tutorial vids! Very helpful.

  • what camera do you use?

  • Great video! I can't find that bracket for the umbrella and the two light sockets. Can you provide a brand or a site? Two camera shops in Los Angeles looked at me like I was crazy.

  • @drongo3 Check out the links in the description of the video for products similar to what I used. (Buy at your own risk, since I don't personaly know the sellers selling those products, plus I can't guarantee the quality of these products)

  • Thanks.... we have been waiting for another of your great tutorials.

    Thank you for doing this!!!!

  • nice job...as always....

  • That's amazing video. I have that same camera. I hope I can shoot as well!

  • What is the brand name of the tungsten 1000 watt light? Where can I purchase it ?

  • @Superfoot Red Head. Here in Canada u can buy it at Vistek, Henrys etc.

  • @Superfoot Check out the links in the description of the video for products similar to what I used. (NOTICE: Buy at your own risk, since I don't personaly know the sellers selling those products, plus I can't guarantee the quality of these products)

  • Great tutorials when this music video coming out ?

  • @schoonline Might be next week actually... on the artists' channel. Jreyez

  • Luv your stuff!

  • Great tutorials!! Very helpful.

I was wondering if you ever do any stuff on locations where power is an issue? Like out in the forest... run a generator? Natural light?

    thanks!

  • @MyFilmProductions Yes... i do lots of stuff on locations... but what i do depends on the budget of the project. If there is money i get proper film generators, HMI PAR lights, etc. If there is little money then I rent small construction generators or precharged batteries and use smaller lights, kino-flos or any light that uses small wattage... on no budget shoots i've even used flashlights. But I always try to use as much natural light as possible. Then enhance it if i can afford it

  • the lighting u use on the girl in the background..Is there a blue gel on that light?

  • @AsVideoProductions22 yes... the two tungsten 1000watt lights are gelled blue. The one on the left is double gelled to get it looking even more blue and the one on the right is gelled only once to help match it to the daylight balanced umbrella light.

  • @polcan99 what brand gels are they and where did u get them from?

  • Got you, Thank you, Let me ask you a question on aperture. I only have the 28-235mm lens that came with the camera, but I saw one other person with the issue but it seems like it might be a user issue rather than a product issue. My aperture stays @ 5.6 no matter the shutter or iso I set to. is this an issue

  • I just bought the Canon 7D and learning. Lighting is my issue and this tutorial was great, but may i ask what manual settings you used wiht the 7D, ie shutter, iso. When i got it i thought i could just film and get those results but I found I had to begin learning the manual settings. Please advise me thank u

  • @communitytv1 For this shot I used ISO 320, standart camera preset. 1920x1080 24fps, with aperature 1.8 and shutter at 1/80 sec. But that doesn't mean it will work for ure particular shot. Exposure changes with each shot. Just make sure u don't over expose or under expose ure shots. As for the ISO, try to keep it as low as you can... 100 or 200, etc and only increase when you don't have enough light. Camera presets also change based on the type of look u're after

  • @polcan99

If you needed it to be darker, would you recomend closing the iris more, or just raising the shutter?

  • I love this channel!

  • I'm a beginning music video director who's emphasis was in post-production in film school. In my quest to find online lighting tutorial yours are by far the best. Thank you for all of your help.

  • Mixing different temperature and color lights is not adviced. You can see why on this tutorial.

  • @Beast1333 Mixing different color temperature lights is the same as gelling the lights warm or cold. U do it when you want to acheive different color lighting for a certain mood. Works for some situations not for others.

  • @polcan99 Agreed. Your mixing of light temperatures in this is spot on. Great job!

  • ha so you filmed this music video with J.

  • awesome as always.

  • Your tutorials are really good. Probably best on Youtube for the subject area. Keep it up! Look forward to more.

  • You should really do a DSLR course in Mississauga you'd make buttloads of money.

  • this was filmed with a dslr right? Images are beautiful but it has this really distinctive "digital" look that are present in dslrs.

  • great stuff! keep em coming

  • Thanks for the info.

  • Thank you for this new tutorial.

  • You are simply amazing Tom! Because of you I am coming up with better music videos. Thank you so much. I love the color correction in the end. Thumbs up. I'll respond with my new video when I am done with it.

  • Man, upload more videos, I'm a big fan of the tutorials. :)

  • thank you tom!!! we miss you!!!
