Teddy and Ike arguably were socialists, particularly Teddy. He was the great grandfather of the modern welfare state (Johnson, FDR, Teddy). That Reagan wanted to cut taxes for the poor is not a bad thing. Republicans support progressive taxation, they just don't support punitive taxation. Untaxing the poor is a just thing to do. Taxing the rich simply because they have is not justified. No one should be taxed into poverty, but every dollar above poverty should see same tax rate.

You think Teddy and Eisenhower were 2 of the greatest presidents? Eisenhower was okay, I suppose, but he started the interstate system with no constitutional justification. Are all our interstates post roads?? Teddy is somewhere above LBJ, but not by much. Any president who believes in nationalizing land for the sake of it does not believe in freedom. If he were smart, he'd have turned the parks into pay for use profit centers, but he didn't even do that with his land grab.

I guess I agree with you on your points, Ike and Teddy both had several very good points as well. I guess if I were alive then though, I would have gotten upset with their progressive causes. It was a different time then though, and the middle class was very small, especially in Teddy's time. We'de have to take all things into account. Reagan was by far one of the best, along with what I know of several of our founding fathers and Lincoln. None were perfect, but none of us are.

You're making the faulty logical assumption that because I argue roads aren't a federal responsibility therefore I'm against roads. That's really quite a ridiculous assumption, but think what you will. States have every authority to build roads and they do build many. Though less common, there are privately owned roads. Why do you seemingly imply that the choice is either federally constructed roads or cobblestone streets? Do you care about govt following the Constitution?

@oterj0- States do build roads. They build roads with Federally provided money. Texas for example, has a tremendous road system provided by Lyndon Johnson when he was in Congress. Texas also has a very modern Electrical Grid system in place in the Central Texas area. Also, provided by Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic Party. All these programs were fought for tooth and nail against the GOP party which tried to block the bills. Take that Rick Perry!

And why praytell does the money have to come from the Congress? Why can't Congress tax less and then States increase taxes as needed to fund roads as they see fit? I don't see that Congress has the authority to grant block grants for States. Congress' authorities are very specific and very limited. If they stuck to their Constitutional duties and nothing more, States could fund their own roads.

They can build post roads and offices, but that's hardly a blanket authority to build roads everywhere. States or the people retain that authority. That you don't like how Texas does its roads is ultimately a question of who you vote for and possibly where you live.

Did McCain come out against a graduated income tax? I didn't think so. No one has said richer people shouldn't pay more taxes. No one. All this video shows is people agreeing with a graduated income tax. This video would be relevant if McCain was for a flat tax.

All McCain has said is that redistribution purely based on an arbitrary income level is bad economic policy. No one is against taxes, just bad tax policy.

And to imply that Reagan shared a tax idea with Obama should offend any liberal.

I'm against the graduated income tax. I'm very much in favor of progressive taxes, but I believe they should be made progressive via a generous, standard deduction. Graduated rates and itemized deductions add unnecessary complexity.  Further, they allow govt to divide and conquer the taxpayers. Don't worry, I won't tax you...I'll just tax all those corporations that you buy stuff from. With 1 rate and 1 standard deduction (per dependent) progressivity without complexity is possible.

Are you guys kidding? None of these examples are anything like what Obama is proposing. Obama is literally going to tax rich people and hand it to poor people in the name of a 'tax credit.' It's a handout. He's not actually going to cut any middle-earner's taxes.

This is a far cry from Ike or Reagan. Obviously, almost all revenue from the government comes from taxes. Obviously, taxes are necessary. They provide for the programs we need. But that's not the same as "redistribution."
