wow - i remember her but didn't appreciate enough, she ... there are no words that describe the perfection of so much expression (i'll stop trying to describe!)
Reminds me of driving through Kentucky on my way home to Ohio from school in Florida. Funny how a song reminds you of things. Driving along Lake Cumberland near Somerset. I must have heard it on the radio. Sweet gal; great song.
Oh boy, what a reading. In my book this is even better than Gordon Lightfoot's original and Marty Robbin's cover which I thought could not be topped. What a singer Connie Smith. Then couple her beautiful voice with cascading orchestration and freewheeling guitar-playing and what have we got? a smorgasbord of heavenly sounds. Such perfection. Thank you for posting this thing of beauty.
oh my god, finally i found this video connie smith,,i still remember i grw up with her songs, thanks for posting this video,,awesome,i really like her song SURELY but i cant find it..
I turned every record store in Nashville up side down looking for that first album! My mom had it when I was a child, I grew up listening to her. I finally found it, and it was worth the search! I had the pleasure of meeting her by chance one day, and she even gave me a hug. It was just a casual day at work, and I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. She sings alot of gospel with the Whites now, she says. She is a real doll! Shes the real deal ppl!
I saw Connie not to long ago. She makes an appearance every now and then. She is married to Marty Stuart now. He has a weekly show on RFD TV now. Maybe she will make some appearances!
The more I hear this, the more I love it. Gordon is the best songwriter ever-period. He has no peers. Although I enjoy Gordon's rendition, it's really cool to hear the various covers of his songs - each with its own unique sound. Connie does a great job on this one, as does Marty Robbins in his version..
We could still have a live duet between Connie Smith and Gordon Lightfoot. That might be even better than Connie and Marty Robbins relying on tracks that were not originally recorded with a duet in mind.
Awesome. She is one of my favorites. I have to many to mention. I was raised on old school country and I love it. I sing all the old greats in karaoke but of course I try to sing I should say. There will never be music like this again. These folks made country music in my opinion.
Maybe Marty Robbins can duet with Connie Smith with some great mixing and engineering work, like they did with the duet by Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole. It would seem to be a daunting task. This is one of my favorite Marty Robbins songs, and I like Connie Smith's version.
the GREAT Canadian folk icon Gordon Lightfoot composed it..and my favorite female country artist sang it....a perfect combination if you ask me :)

How about a round of applause for the gentleman who wrote this terrific song - Orillia's own Gordon Lightfoot?
