I'm sorry to hear about your bike. For everybody else, always use 2 locks with different locking mechanisms - a U lock for the frame and cable lock for the wheels. Most bike thieves will only have one tool on them for one lock.
I'm sorry to hear about this. Did you have the bike registered? You can try going to flea markets and the Tenderloin to try to recover it if you have it registered.
@patma the only problem with this is that your cable lock *usually* is locked into the U lock so instead of two mechanisms, most only have one in this scenario. I use two U locks myself.
was that a cable lock I doubt he had time to use a car jack on a u lock. I use a onguard x4 front and rear and I still worry.the best way to keep it safe is to bring it in or have the commuting "magna" etc though that really sucks and I hope he gets his [7th circle of hell]!!
p.s. Of course the building and "security" claim zero responsibility for the stolen bike, even though I asked for an exception because I was a new employee. So not only am I out a $1500 bike, but $25 for the lock! Argh... the bitter irony of it all.
The lock question is a good one. I am a new employee in that building and wasn't aware of the "no bikes inside" policy, so assumed I could bring the bike to my desk. The security guard wouldn't let me, even when I told her I didn't have a lock on me. So I found a local Ace hardware and bought the best cable lock I could find there. Obviously it wasn't good enough. Make sure you have a good lock!!
Posting is on Craigslist under "Picture of my bike thief--recognize him??" with a description of the (probably long lost) Trek 5500 OCLV carbon fiber road bike.

@patma Don't forget to check out the flea markets in Oakland, that's where a lot of SF bikes end up.

Of course I locked the bike! He cut the lock. That why he took out the sweatshirt--to hide the cutters.

so, um, you didn't lock your bike?

@anastrophe I wouldn't consider a cable lock a lock so guess he didn't!
