Thanks for your comment. This rig was made from materials at hand. Some comercial rigs use a gear system like you describe. It requires strong materials with precise construction-- something beyond my "afternoon project" scope.
of all the front rowing contraptions out there this one seems the most cumbersome and impractical. The easiest would be the closest to the original rowing motion, which could be achieved with rows split at the fulcrum, connected with a simple gear. That would result in very natural forward rowing, without a big rig in the middle of the boat.

need to add handles to the paddles wo your chin isnt on the post and so you get more leverage but that cool
