@orenda14 Believe it or not, this song is a lot older than Lead Belly. The oldest known recording of the song was done in the 1920's (almost 20 years before Lead Belly recorded it), but no one seems to know for sure what the origins of the song are. In any case, I love this version--amazing guitar playing!
What's really funny is their old drums used to be a 3 set. A floor tom, bass drum, and a snare drum with only 1 cymbal and high-hats XD Yet, they still played these songs.. Amazing..
they are good here, but after so many times of changing players they seem to have lost there edge, that made them, the ventures, that and the sound of those, mosright, guitars,no other set of strings had that ,sound,
This is a Cajun sharing his native folklore with people from a faraway land. Seriously one of the best guitar performances I've heard from Gerry McGee.
@garyguitar not right..... The Shadows influenced a lot more........ I like The Ventures, but The Shadows had that kind of sense of style, detail and perfection, The Ventures just have not that much.....
@FBAV I disagree, but everyone to their own opinion. The Ventures sold a lot more records than the Shadows, who weren't that popular in the US. The Ventures were a lot more popular in the US and Europe and very big in Japan. Rethinking, I imagine Chuck Berry, Hendrix, were probably greater inflences. Elvis caused many to pick up a guitar. SRV to a lesser extent later. But who cares, dig 'em all.
Am I wrong or is that drummer not even able to hit the ride more than 4 times a measure??? 'Cause when there is any very typical thing in this song which cannot be forgotten if you take The Animals' version as your example, than every a BIT drummer would hit that ride like The Animals do (1...2-3...4-5-6....1...2-3...4-5-6 and so on)
In the 60s and 70s I watched Jerry McGee (Jerry McGee & The Cajuns) live on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. He was too incredible to have to play with the Ventures or any group. I guess it was better pay. Oh well.......
This guitarist is the best

Just look what these guys did with this old Blues standard. AND these guys were the Daddy to Heavy Metal. And that's all there is to that.
