Fates Warning is not Alder's band, if anything were founded by guitarist Jim Matheos who has also written most of its material. Mark Zonder, one of the best drummers ever to be alive on the planet, also used to be in the band until 2005. Not to mention that it is not a former band, they have just been dormant for a while (releasewise), touring however. Saw them in Greece last year, epic as always. Rumour has it they are gonna release new material in 2012.
Actually, Fates has been around since 1983. They released their first album in 1984 with John Arch on vocals and Vic Arduini on guitars alongside Jim. They started out as a sort of Iron Maiden copy at first, but got more progressive as time went on. They weren't a true progressive metal band until Perfect Symmetry, which remains my favorite in their catalog.
@thefateshavewarned Have you heard the new Mathoes/Arch project? it F'n rocks. I also have all the OSI stuff Mathoes did with Kevin Moore of Early Dream Theater notoriety . (Mike Portenoy played on first 2 CD's then they got Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree to play drums on the 3rd OSI CD...bad ass stuff, they even had the singer of Opeth sing the song Stockholm on that one)
@drmhyde Yes I have. I actually posted a video review of it not to long ago. It's my most viewed video to date. It's without a doubt the best album I've heard this year, metal, prog, or otherwise.
"This is Redemption singer's old band..." That sounded really unfair. It seems that Fates Warning doesn´t have the recognition it deserves as one of the best metal/prog bands ever.

old fates warning was much better, john arch was their singer then and he is an amazing vocalist, they were also a lot heavier back then.pick up john arch's twist of fate ep if you can get ahold of it(mike portnoy on drums!),it is pure gold
