  • Derek Jacobi is absolutely the best Hamlet ever. He is the only actor who interprets the lines so the play hangs together and Hamlet's motivations are clear. Some would say Hamlet's motives will never be clear, but Jacobi helped me understand and empathize with him. I was livid at what Rosencrantz and Guildenstern did to him. Most actors playing Hamlet seem not to comprehend what they are saying; the words lack meaning and motivation.

  • 6:25 I NEED TP FOR MY BUNGHOLE!

  • 1 person dislikes this. Yorick maybe?

  • @mbburch06 certainly not! yorick would have loved it. after all, he was a jester and loved making fun of mysery and sorrow.

  • Holy crap. Brilliant!

  • Derek was so sexy then. He still is to this day!

  • This is my favourite version of Hamlet. :)

  • @JackLovesTheDoctor mine too.

  • Derek is totally the best Hamlet I've ever seen. I first saw this one as a high school student in the 80s. He made me cry! The dvd is available as a big set of plays done by BBC called, I think, The Complete Shakespeare. It's quite expensive, but I've seen it on Amazon. My local library has it, and I've checked it out and used it for my classes now that I teach school.

  • i saw the one with mel gibson it was very good maybe this is better :-)

  • I have no idea how people can say Kenneth Branagh is the best Hamlet. Branagh is awful, AWFUL compared to Sir Derek!

  • @kayleighsmithson maybe because itțs the newest version.

  • Part of a series produced by the BBC in the late '70's, and I believe Dr. Jonathan "Beyond the Fringe" Miller directed it.

    Jacobi=Naturalist Genius.

  • allas, poor yorik. i knew him well.

  • @simpsonman956 i knew him, HORATIO*

  • Good Old Shakespeare.

"Imperious Caesar, dead and turn'd to clay,

Might stop a hole to keep the wind away:

O, that that earth, which kept the world in awe,

Should patch a wall to expel the winter flaw!"

    God, could he write!

  • oh yea.

  • Is this the old BBC production? To see such a great English thespian so well know for the Bard actually doing Shakespeare on film is a huge treat.

  • It also has Patrick Stewart as Hamlets uncle.

It is wonderful, and was a treat to watch in English class.

  • The best Hamlet ever, and hard to find. Thanks for this!

  • Oh, so welcome.
