it is what we call in astrophotography as "the seeing factor", due to the earth atmospheric turbulence. that is why those hubble pics are far sharper without those 'seeing' effect.
where and when were this taken? astrophotography would be best taken right after the rain settles on a very high mountain top.
@azmisj this video was shot in June this past summer. it was a clear night with virtually no wind but was warm and like you say there is still a lot of atmospheric turbulence. ive never shot anything like this and i probably never will again. was just curious as to how close i could get with mere photography gear.
@supercalifrachidisi 1344mm would be the magnification of the 300mm + 2x + 1.4x attached. the T2i shooting in crop mode of 640x480 gets you about 7x movie crop (according to canon specs). so if you take 300m+2x+1.4x u get 840mm...then...times that by 7x & u get 5880. here is where im not sure though...r u supposed to also times that number by 1.6 which is the crop of the Canon sensor getting then 9408mm? all i know it way more than 1344mm.
At approximately the end of 1:03 a black object zips across the moon, perhaps only in two frames. This is a satellite. They are not uncommon seeing as there are thousands of satellites in orbit, and each of them go around the earth in between 40 and 190 minutes.
@janzgrosseskino the canon 300mm f2.8 isnt really a giant lens compared to the bigger canon lenses. its the canon 2x & 1.4x multipliers plus the very high magnification mode on the t2i that brings it to this extreme magnification.
@tehnoobworldrival you tell me! i honestly dont know what it was. i didnt notice when i was shooting but saw it after i brought it into FCP. interestingly i saw another moon video on youtube that had exactly the same thing on it. i did put a little "swish" effect on the audio track in post production though...haha! maybe someone here can chime in with some sort of an explanation.
@MaghoxFr i dont think this rolling shutter but rather heavy atmosphere. this is the only night that i tried this and this is what i got. ive seen many other videos without this swirly stuff though. the night was still and i didnt touch the camera at all during the clips used here so i dont believe the camera was jiggling to create any rolling shutter. after getting this close id love to get closer to really see whats in those craters.
@formattester6 after posting my comment I watched it again and thought that it couldn't be rolling shutter, but maybe hot air, as you say. I know the camera should have been very still but maybe with such a big zoom any small movement makes rolling shutter, that's why I thought it could be it. I'm getting the t2i (actually the kiss x4) with the kit 15-55mm and the 55-250mm, it's a bargain. Loved the vid of the moon, must be really addictive to shoot it.
@MaghoxFr had i been on a lesser tripod and head and had some breeze there would have surely been some movement in the camera. as stable as my tripod is (Miller Solo VJ legs & Vinten Vision 3 Head) i couldnt touch the lens or camera while shootin without seeing some shake. magnification was fierce and almost breathing on it would create some shake.
@photoflix291 the 300mm 2.8 is an awesome lens but its quality does get somewhat diluted after stacking the 2x & 1.4x converters. even though this isnt the type of photography or video that i do i have to admit that after getting this close to the moon...now id love to get way more close to see whats down inside those craters. anyone with the Canon 800mm big white?
300 mm on a full frame sensor Canon is only 6x. On a non full frame Canon it's 6x * 1.6 or 9.6x.
50 mm on a full frame sensor = 1x, just as we see it.

@tpan413 i wonder how often in a day or in an hour does that happen? what do you think the odd of shooting and having that happen are?

actually all satellites orbit the earth in 90 minutes

awesome vid... I shot the moon with my t2i + 70-200 and had to crop to 100% just to see detail. Currently saving up for 300 2.8

@photoflix291 Shoot it in video crop mode and extract a still from that. You'll get pretty close with your current lens.
