well the romans had one row figfhting first. when they look fatigued the commander would have the second row pull them back and take their place. the first row goes to the back constantly presenting the exhausted enemy with fresh soldiers.

I think because of the recurring sentence: "And I'll be waiting for you, forever..." My interpretation: Often Roman warriors doesnt came back home, but her wifes wait for them faithfully. They understand their duty and sacrifice for Rome. And in another way, Rome itself is called the eternal city. The Romans created a very strong legacy. So i think that is the reason why the title of the song is "Forever".

Compared to other armies, Romans had very low casualties, so it wasn't that often that they didn't come back home.

Well they did and won :p. The Gauls were brave but divided, making the task easier for the Romans. I think greece was decadent when Rome fought them, and Scipion took care of the Carthaginian elephants by scaring them, making them run amok amongst carthaginian lines. Don't know about the fleet though.

But yeah sure, I wouldn't like to fight them.
