The Peta and all of you people need to get off their backs. It's not the same thing with every store, whether its Petco, Petland, Petsmart, whatever. They aren't all full of Animal cruelty. This is so silly! For one Petlands are ALL individually owned franchises, SOME unfortunately do buy from or support puppy mills INDIRECTLY and often un-knowingly. The one in Heath,Ohio I know for a fact deals mostly with local breeders as their primary source for puppies. As far as pinkies being frozen that is just the way it is and those sensitive to the process obviously have their right to opinion. BUT! is it any different from setting traps in your home if you have a rodent problem?
And from the ASPCA, ALL pet lands buy from puppymills...Buying from breeders would not be profitable...Breeders charge large amounts for their puppies while puppy mills mass produce....PETLAND DOES NOT GET FROM PRIVATE BREEDERS....plain and simple.

This really doesn't surprise me. The dogs at PetLand are kept in tiny cage floor kennels and everytime I go in there they have rat, mice, and hamster babies. They let them breed like crazy. I once went in and started handling the hamsters. In one sitting I pulled out 3 with wet tail, 1 with severe injuries, and 1 that wasn't breathing properly and refused to move. I yelled at the employee there I was so mad. They don't take care of any of the animals.
They die a less painful death than if they were getting eating by acid in a snake's stomach. I work at a Petstore too, and sometimes when hamsters give birth the father will eat the babies. Get both sides of the store and become educated on the matter at hand before letting PETA get you caught up unnecessarily worrying about something.
You don't freeze pinkies alive. It's inhumane. I always use CO2 and they just go to sleep. It is also inhumane to smack them on a surface. It's annoying that people think that is acceptable.
I support the rights of animals, but this is nature. If you feed them live, the prey can freak out and feel pain and terror and possibly do damage to the predator. This way they can freeze them so the pinky feels less pain. And for feeding snakes other things, they are still living creatures because they will not eat vegetables or fruits.

I do not agree with any of Petlands viewpoints or how they treat the animals in their care. if you are allowed to own a 200 lb dog then why shouldn't you be able to own a snake that you keep in a tank that takes up zero room? all animals need to eat, it's theway of life.

To be quit blunt with both of you, when the mice get shipped (from most suppliers), they are killed in a CO2 Chamber (they fall asleep and dont wake up) then frozen. This isn't an issue of "as long as I dont have to do it", it is actually an issue of why do it any other way?

I once found a dead rat in a Petland store, it was rotting, so it must have been dead for a while, and when I confronted an employee, his response was: "It's just sleeping." Yes, a rotten rat with open eyes buried under four inches of bedding is sleeping.
Snakes are meat eaters. You can't just throw in a piece of carrot becuase you feel bad for the mice. It's not pretty to see it happen, but if you can't handle it then you shouldn't own a snake. No matter how much you hate it, nature still has to take it's course. You can't love animals yet allow one to starve because you feel bad for it's food. At least they die in a freezer rather than being attacked by a hungry snake. Release the snake into the wild...it's still going to kill mice & eat them.

SOME people seem to forget that these are breathing things much smaller then us that depend and trust in us to keep them safe. Its clear animals have emotions and feelings, as they have personalities and they get mad, and appear depressed when a friend in the cage passes.
Petland shouldnt be allowed to sell any animals anymore ALL the dogs come form puppy mills, when poor puppies live in tiny cages, with barely and sometimes without any water or food and living in a very unclean invironment untill they get sold to a pet store. Stop the animal cruelty, dont buy your pets, go to a local animal shelter and adopt a dog or cat there. I handle the babies from the day they are born, and when they are juveniles, large enough to feed, I smack them on the wall to stun them and then they are fed live to the Tegu. I understand all of your concerns, but... it's a fucking mouse. Not a child, not a puppy, The parents cannibalize the babies if conditions are wrong. They are savage animals. I thought they were put to sleep in CO2 before being frozen. I guess Petland doesn't want to spend money on gas so they just freeze them alive. Videos like this are sickening. Ok well that's just not an option. These pinkies are used as a food source for carnivores, so you can't poison them. That would be a complete waste. What do you want them to do, put snakes on a vegetable-only diet? Or you could let the snakes hunt live mice, which would mean a very scary and painful last few seconds of life.

I work at Petco, and thankfully, ours come in already frozen. The company doesnt do any sort of those things. I often wondered exactly how they died, but being eaten alive by a snake would surely be worse.

DISGUSTING! I have been to this Petland to see how the rats were being treated just last year. It was deplorable! Feces in empty water and food bowls; female rats housed w/ males! I complained to the nit wits working there, then to the manager. I took me 30 mins of complaining before they did anything. I stood there and watched them clean the bowls and refill them and clean out the cages. Bunch of horrid, awful people..I wish they would close this place down.

Although i believe that it is a natural cycle for things to be born to die, and that freezing must be faster and better than being digested alive, It is definately not painless, nor like going to sleep. it is more like feeling cold, then numb for a minute or two, then feeling like your skin is burning and your flesh is hardening. I used to work at Petland and this was done daily. As she said, some employees would put the pinkies in the bag and smack them on the floor before freezing them. Others would just let them freeze to death.
I REFUSED to have any part of this. Instead, I would put the pinkies in a box and take them home where I would bottle feed and raise them until I could find them good homes to be kept as pets, not food.
What they don't mention is that mice aren't the only animals they do this with. It's sad

I do not agree with any of Petlands viewpoints or how they treat the animals in their care. if you are allowed to own a 200 lb dog then why shouldn't you be able to own a snake that you keep in a tank that takes up zero room? all animals need to eat, it's theway of life.

To be quit blunt with both of you, when the mice get shipped (from most suppliers), they are killed in a CO2 Chamber (they fall asleep and dont wake up) then frozen. This isn't an issue of "as long as I dont have to do it", it is actually an issue of why do it any other way?

Snakes are meat eaters. You can't just throw in a piece of carrot becuase you feel bad for the mice. It's not pretty to see it happen, but if you can't handle it then you shouldn't own a snake. No matter how much you hate it, nature still has to take it's course. You can't love animals yet allow one to starve because you feel bad for it's food. At least they die in a freezer rather than being attacked by a hungry snake. Release the snake into the wild...it's still going to kill mice & eat them.

Petland shouldnt be allowed to sell any animals anymore ALL the dogs come form puppy mills, when poor puppies live in tiny cages, with barely and sometimes without any water or food and living in a very unclean invironment untill they get sold to a pet store. Stop the animal cruelty, dont buy your pets, go to a local animal shelter and adopt a dog or cat there. Stop Puppy mills, stop hurting animals, they cant talk but if they could they would scream for help cause they have feelings like u & me

... I breed mice to feed to my Tegu. I handle the babies from the day they are born, and when they are juveniles, large enough to feed, I smack them on the wall to stun them and then they are fed live to the Tegu. I understand all of your concerns, but... it's a fucking mouse. Not a child, not a puppy, The parents cannibalize the babies if conditions are wrong. They are savage animals. Not cute fuzzy little babies.

I thought they were put to sleep in CO2 before being frozen. I guess Petland doesn't want to spend money on gas so they just freeze them alive. Videos like this are sickening. People seem to forget mice and rats are ANIMALS too and deserve the same kind of respect. Those poor pinky mice. There needs to be more awareness of the abuse of rats and mice. I'm glad PETA is standing up for these sweet, often defenseless creatures.

i think before they do this they should really find other ways to do this at least so they don't suffer :( like lethal injections or there are pills that dogs take to slow them down so they relax they could put that in the food (or milk feed them whatever) and the pinkies would just fall asleep and die (i know it still sounds wrong but it's definatley better than freezing them to death)

Ok well that's just not an option. These pinkies are used as a food source for carnivores, so you can't poison them. That would be a complete waste. What do you want them to do, put snakes on a vegetable-only diet? Or you could let the snakes hunt live mice, which would mean a very scary and painful last few seconds of life.

This is utterly disgusting. I work at Petco, and the people at Petland don't have to do this. Our "Pinkies" already come pre-packaged. Petland is inhumane. There are plenty of animals that need to be adopted into good homes. Thats why we don't sell puppies or kittens. Plus spending day after day in a cage like that is a horrible life for a puppy or kitten.

if freezing pinkies is inhumane, then feeding anoles to larger lizards must be inhumane too. but thats what anoles are, feeder lizards, breed to be food for larger animals.
my friend used to breed mice, just to feed his snakes. the pinkies got fed to the smaller two snakes, and the adults got fed to the big boy.
i guess killing cows or chickens for human consumption is ok, but this is cruel? GET OVER IT!

I work at Petco, and thankfully, ours come in already frozen. The company doesnt do any sort of those things. I often wondered exactly how they died, but being eaten alive by a snake would surely be worse.

Im so pissed that was my first job..
I was 14 and had no idea.
Then I quit because it was horrible there how people would treat the animals.
One guy lit one of the store's live rats on fire behind the store!
And they would feed the snakes our guinea pigs and laugh about it.
But I would always try so hard to play with all the animals because I knew it was such a horrible place.
I'm ashamed I worked there...

REPUTABLE pet stores gas their small "feeders" with CO2 chambers BEFORE freezing them. The death is painless and very quick.

DISGUSTING! I have been to this Petland to see how the rats were being treated just last year. It was deplorable! Feces in empty water and food bowls; female rats housed w/ males! I complained to the nit wits working there, then to the manager. I took me 30 mins of complaining before they did anything. I stood there and watched them clean the bowls and refill them and clean out the cages. Bunch of horrid, awful people..I wish they would close this place down.

I almost froze to death at one point. Although i believe that it is a natural cycle for things to be born to die, and that freezing must be faster and better than being digested alive, It is definately not painless, nor like going to sleep. it is more like feeling cold, then numb for a minute or two, then feeling like your skin is burning and your flesh is hardening. I assure any of you who have not felt it first-hand: It is by no means painless, nor like going to sleep.

I used to work at Petland and this was done daily. As she said, some employees would put the pinkies in the bag and smack them on the floor before freezing them. Others would just let them freeze to death.
I REFUSED to have any part of this. Instead, I would put the pinkies in a box and take them home where I would bottle feed and raise them until I could find them good homes to be kept as pets, not food.
What they don't mention is that mice aren't the only animals they do this with. It's sad
