  • Do BFI Films shoot the bombay in1938 ?

  • To continue, the bindi isn't "the mark of the pooja of the Brahmin", whatever that means, the Jama Masjid was not built to commemorate "a vast Mohammedan invasion from Baluchistan"; the Qutb Minar was not built by the Mughals, who didn't arrive for around 300 years after it was built; etc. Given the Brits ruled the damn place for close to 200 yrs, could they not have got a person who knew some basic history to do the vioce-over? Hilarious.

  • @sd268 Indeed the ignorance is laughable.

  • Really quite extraordinary how the commentary gets virtually bit of history flat-out wrong. Starting with the Babur being the first conqueror; using "Mughal" as interchangeable with Muslim, turning Shah Jahan into Akbar's son; showing pictures of the ruins of Mehrauli and talking about Akbar who came some 350 yrs later; saying saris are 10 yards long .... it's delightful as a piece of unintentional comedy!

  • I steel feel this indescribable feeling, when i see old movies or videos. When you know that this woman is dead now, but you can see her in a living moment full of spirit and live.

I cant describe this feeling, but i love it and i hope you understand what i mean :)

    Btw Thanks for the upload

  • Like the panoramic shot in the end. Delhi looks the same now, except just picture 15 million more people there and also you will have to picture things in your mind cuz you can't actually see very much due to the smog.

  • Beautifullll

  • one of the best videos I have ever seen. However qutub minar was built by muslims but not built by Mughals.

  • India was so clean back then.

  • wow, what a ridiculous glorification of the the british colonial rule is this!! all that good cinematography and such a devious idea behind it!! shameful.

  • Just one small mistake there; the Pearl Mosque in Delhi was made by Aurangzeb. The one Shah Jahan made for his wife is located inside the Agra Fort, Agra, India.

  • what a magnificent city delhi is. I am glad to see connaught place is being restored to its former glory but delhi is so much more crowded nowadays.

  • the Media is lying. The Mughals never built anything but destroyed everything. The muslims cannot even make a wiper. How can they create huge structures? Our whole history is distorted. Moreover, those Indian muslim rulers were responsible for our country getting taken over by the British. Tipu Sultan is the prime example who couldn't protect our country from these white aliens.

  • dare I say it... before things went to shit

  • I wantz mah CP BACK!!!

    priceless thank you peeps@BFI

  • I cant understand why you guys are talking about what Britain, or India or Mughals did RIGHT NOW??? That is past, good or bad, in anyone's perspective, we cant change it,,,, please enjoy this invaluable peace of document guys, this work is really awesome, hats off to legendary Jack Cardiff.

  • It is unfortunate that India was left orphaned in 1947. I wish British had stayed in India till the 1970's. They gave us our identity. Everything in Mordern India is a gift from the British. Railways, Police, Judiciary, Elections, Cricket, Courts, Schools, Universities, Armed Forces, Administration everything was British Endowment in India. All we have managed in the past 60 years is to turn these institutions into a corrupt fiefdom of hooligans.

  • Are you crazy, or what? During the entire period of British rule, over 50 million Indians died of famine. That is more people that the Holocaust and World Wars combined. Even in the haphazard way that they left us, people in the states who suffered the most, Bengal and Punjab could go on killing each other, which they did. The early Mughals ran the country far better than the later ones, and for that matter the British as well. Modernity had to come to India, British rule or otherwise.

  • India wouldn't have seen the day lights of modernity, had the British not ruled us. Caste, Religion, Language and Region all separate Indians till date. Modernity is judged by the progressiveness of the society and not by temples and mosoleums built by the Rajas and Mughals of India.

  • @sivashan2

Mughals never built anything. Muslims cannot even built a wiper which is used to wipe cars. They import everything from outside. Look at Arabs. They cannot build anything; look at Pakis. Most of muslim countries are failing or failed states. How can they build huge monuments? This is BS. India's modernity is because of its own self.. The British never did anything. Whatever they did was meant for elite and not the masses. The British elites were oppressive in nature.

  • @zakuza92 ppl like u are misinformed cancer and should stay in hospital under supervision. Do not spread your hate and lies on the media, you make every hindu look cheesball. shut up and go back to jungle where you com from...

  • @zakuza92 Hahahahaha Hinduuuuuuuuus build Mosque & Palace for Muslims when Muslims Ruled India 1000 years??

  • @zigzagdunia yes zakuza hahaha... just like muslims now make statues of indian gods for their festivals.. get more knowledge and values... respect religions and their people..

  • @sivashan2

The corrupt government was given by the British to India. Like Americans set up corrupt and weak government in the middle East to control it. Similarly, that's what British did. You are a total moron. COlonialism is never a good thing. Whatever Indians are achieving right now is because of their own selves but we still have a long way to go. Don't give any foreigner a credit for your achievements. The British Empire is gone just like the Ancient Egyptian Empire 2000-4000 yrs ago.

  • Why would you expect something else? It was made by the British during the Raj, so surely you should expect what they wanted to say or show. Ok, the film might not give the story that you want to see, but it is still a fascinating historical document. It's just a shame that the Indian film archive doesn't have a youtube channel, then you might get some of the films that you want to see.

  • what have others done anyway?

What is current generation doing? Leaving out our culture and values and being 'progressive'.

Look at the whole picture and not just a part of it.

The greatest masterpieces like the Taj Mahal have been built by these very people that you are saying have 'destroyed' your great culture.

  • LOL, Shahjahan was Akbar's son? thanks for deleting Jahangir, he was a junkie anyway :)

  • Thankyou BFI. My Great Grandfather was in the British Indian Army during this time, and this realy brings that era to life.

  • Settle down girls! The intermission will be soon and nanny may buy you an ice cream. But onnnnnnly if you are GOOD!

  • @applecounty spot on !!!!!!

  • looks like he kept away from the slums....

  • Oh how knowledgeable of you to point this out in such a positive manner. Do you wish to complain that he missed out on videos of the British beating Indians? Or gosh, Hitler was persecuting the Jews then wasn't he? Damn why didn't Jack Cardiff show that either?

This film was not meant to be a 'complete view of Delhi in the 1930s'. Appreciate it for what it is and if you feel the need to acknowledge its failings, try not to sound like a whining little girl.

  • no need to be rude now is there?

  • A quality film. The camera work was excellent. Delhi was a beautiful place back in 1938. Not the crowded and dirty Delhi of today. It was a bit sad to see Indians doing the white man's bidding as soldiers. Many of the soldiers shown here will die in far off Europe in the years to come. Indian women are by far the prettiest in the world (in my opinion at least). Too bad the British allowed the partition of India and the carnage that followed. A real blunder. Criminal I'd say.

  • jack cardiff one of the worlds greatest cinematographers

  • 'A Road in India' - one of several short films that Jack shot in in India in 1938 - is also available to view on this channel.

  • Comment removed

  • "the British taught the Indians"....HA HA HA classic

  • Awesome short, thanks BFI!

  • Beautiful! thank you for posting!

  • Nicely to see something old

  • Excellent clip! The style is of the time..mysterious and absorbing. Although also quite different, the old-fashioned narration reminds me of Disney's 'nature documentaries' from the 50s. E.g. 'white wilderness'.

ps. then the British called muslims 'Mohammedans'.

Maybe we should use that term again, for a freh start(?) And call the fanaticist extremists another term.

  • 'Mohammedan' is a term that is rejected by Muslims as it misrepresents their religion. The expression was only ever used by Westerners to describe Muslims. So, maybe not such a good idea to start using it again.

  • How does it misrepresent" their religion???

  • good quality!!
