Just to set things straight, this song was NOT composed by a Jewish boy who was orphaned in WWII.

The tune is lifted from Polish popular Music and the words were added in 1932 by Yiddish songwriter, lyricist, actor, playwright, director, and producer Herman Yablokoff [Hayim Yablonik] (1903–81) who was born in Grodno, Russian Poland (now Belarus).

This song was wriiten by a jewish boy who was orphaned during WWII. My mom used to sing it to me...my dad told me about those times when he had to eat leftovers from trashcans...It is a very sad song representing many many jewish kids in Russia.

Part 2

His wares --- cigarettes and matches. Although he is drenched from the rain, he kept his "merchandise" dry. He begs and begs the people to have pity and buy from him or else he'll parish from starvation. To no avail,however, they just ridicule him and keep on walking. His conclusion --- he'll have to die like a dog on the street.

This song was recorded by many singers. ZULLY'S vesion, in my opinion, is the best.

My comment to those people who argue whether this is about Russian or Polish cigarettes ---you guys missed the whole premise of the song. This song represents a WAY-OF-LIFE for very young and poor children during and after WWII.They roamed the streets trying to survive.Some children danced, while others tried to sell certain items for a couple of pennies.

The song PAPIROSEN talks about a sad, tired, wet, lonely and hungry orphan boy who walks the dark cold and rainy streets selling his wares.

"Papirosa" is actually self-made sigarette. One just pours some tobacco on a piece of paper and then wraps it into a tube. It's not a "Russian sigarette", it's somrthing people used to make because they were poor. It was different from sigarette by not having any kind of filter.
