  • iam back in the late 70s :)

  • Truer words were never spoken (or sung). VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR!!! Thank you, MTV!! *sigh*

  • from the album...The Age of Plastic.

  • “I met your children....what did you tell them?".....

  • And now Buggles kill the great YES star!

  • Never ever tire of this song! LOL..awesome

  • Vevo killed the youtube star...

  • MTV murdered the video star........

  • @crazydavesemporium MTV destroyed themselves by changing what direction that they went . They NEED to focus on MUSIC not reality shows.

  • This is before MTV went all Gangsta and Boob obsessed.

  • 116 people must have started watching MTV after it stopped playing Music.

  • Hey guys. I'm sorry my generation killed off MTV.

  • Time machines do exist, I have several in my basemant as do many other enthusists; They are 80's classic arcade games, remember Asteroids, Pacman and Space Invaders???? These hard to find relics are only a quarter away from taking me back to when I didn't give a fuck about the world as it truely is.

  • @MarkFaust actually i did have all those i bought a atari 7600 with 4 controllers broken and a crap load of atari games for 10 bucks at ayard sale yrs ago and gav eto my sister take to her house lol wish now i still had those lol

  • people don't have good taste in music

    116 dislikes

    come on!!!!!

  • When did lady gaga release this video?!

  • @MarionetteKazuko Go fuck yourself this has nothing too do with that bitch!

  • Oha Oh

  • wth why is there 115 dislikes

  • @JacobHillproductions there's 116

  • Just love saying Oh- a Oh! something about it just makes me smile

  • I'm gonna find this on cassette and buy it. Analog will return.

  • God bless the weirdness of the '80s.

  • I remember watching this the first night MTV broadcasted.

  • Ah, back when MTV was actually MUSIC Television and not Shitty reality show television...

  • is it sad the you hate ur own generation because i hate mine very much everything is so stupid curse 90's babies

  • An appropriate first song

  • ohh ohh !

  • omfg i love this song

  • WHY DOES THE TIME MACHINE NOT EXIST????????????

  • The little girl is my big sister, no lie!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • you never saw it coming...the beginning of the end.

  • I would love to be in a position to PUSH back.

  • Back then, video killed the radio star.

    Now, reality TV killed MTV.

  • Given today's music, it's a good thing MTV doesn't play music videos anymore.

And if they did why bother. It all sounds the same anyway...

  • pretty good start to what would lead to a crappy reality show network

  • I think people would be amazed that MTV actually play music videos at one time. Not that the music was worth a crap.

  • Then MTV = Music Television

    Now MTV = Moron Television

  • @CheckM8King2 Indeed.

  • MTV launched on August 1st, 1981 at 12:01 am.

  • MTV ruled 1979

  • @TheBayern64 it didnt exist in '79 ......knucklehead

  • Where did MTV go? Reality -_-

  • Whats the deal with that little girl? O_o

  • i like this song.... i wasnt even born yet though when this came out... considering im 15........

  • i can remember when MTV first came out !! it blew our minds !

  • That's, satan worshipping zombie sluts.

  • The world is about to come to an end, so who cares.

I don't see U2 playing free concerts to help the needy or the sick, now it's just Gaga corpo-video mutant creations of robo-music merged together with porn to teachyoung fans not to expand one's imagination, but how to be sluts.

  • Was this actually the first music video on MTV?

  • @MrShaiGenis Yes. The very first one.

  • @Lucy29138 Wow, well this song deserves to be the first, from my perspective that is.

  • biiig tuneee

  • Reality tv killed the video star. Bummer.

  • not that that is a good thing..

  • definately the best video to be the first on mtv lol..this really was the death of radio stars like wolfman jack lol

  • I was lucky to have actually watched this first video back in the day. Back in the day things were much much better than now for sure, today things are screwed up. I feel fortunate to have been an 80's child. The arcades, movies and overall attitudes of people are now suddenly gone. Oh well.

  • @MarkFaust totally agree with you.

  • @MarkFaust I am still in the 1980s at heart...we were lucky...blessed!

  • @MarkFaust You were lucky indeed. We were too poor to afford cable TV back then. In fact we were so poor if I didn't wake up with a boner on Christmas day I didn't have anything to play with!

  • @MarkFaust Not to mention our grandparents were still alive, & many people that have passed on since that great era. The 1% have TRULY made life miserable for the rest of us, it's time to start pushing back now. Enough is enough!

  • @MarkFaust :(

  • @MarkFaust haha yes, and someone said the same thing about our generation thirty years ago.... times aren't worse, just different. Sadly, the generation you are talking about are the children of 80s kids. If things have gotten that bad, it's our fault.

  • @LovintheLand Amen

  • @MarkFaust In another 20 years, we're gonna be saying that about the 2000s. :)

  • @AmbeJL the 2000s meaning 2000 to 2099

  • @MarkFaust Maybe you should find some better people to be around? ;D

  • @MarkFaust I agree things much better in the 80's. First heard this song at about 1 in the morning trying to get to sleep listening to radio Luxemburg. Song was introduced as a brand new release. Couldn't wait to tell my mates in school next day about this great new song i had listened to! feels like it was only yesterday.

  • @lyneham69 me too first time i saw was on top of the pops back in the late 70s and i was eight ,, good days wish i was back at school with my young mates

  • you like song but you barely know what he saying

  • Some trivia for you. Everyone knows this was the first video played on MTV. Can anyone name the second video played on MTV?

  • @shelleyinthecity Land of Confusion?

  • People should stop bitchin about how MTV isn't for music anymore. True they don't play music videos anymore, but on shows like MTV news i learned of some really cool bands. If you wanna watch music videos watch Much Music or VH1. Don't hate on MTV

  • @IsLifeA shut up

  • Flash back, I was around when this was played on "Mtv" When Mtv played Music Video, and not what they play now,

  • I wonder if the Buggers ever thought what would kill the video star?

  • Comment removed

  • my theory about the 80's is that they discoverd the auto tuner and just went buck wild ps i love the 80's

  • @PsychoGiraffe9 Theres a difference between auto-tune and this kind of vocal effects. This gives the song a different feel while most people just hide behind auto-tune cause they cant sing

  • THUMBS UP IF YOU THINK "THUMBS-UP" COMMENTS ARE JUST A SHAMELESS WAY OF GETTING THUMBS-UP! ...lol

  • my teacher plays this lol

  • I f i was president of MTV i would make so many changes, i would make a MTV REALITY for all those jersey shore ass holes. return great shows like headbangers ball, and YO! MTV Raps. i would air Jersey shore... for two hours 12 am - 1 am. bring back VJs, and MTV News. and return MTV to MUSIC TELEVISION, the way it was ment to be.

  • I WANT MY ORIGINAL MTV CLASS OF 82

  • I am getting close to the big 50 and i remember this song when I was in HS, didn't watch MTV back then, no time. We left the house at 6 hung out and didn't watch much TV. But what great music in the 70's and early 80's.

  • this is when MTV was fun.. now if sucks ass

  • I actually liked mtv like 7 years ago, i thought it was pretty good, it hardly had music on then but still kinda did and was a channel i would watch regularly(made, room raiders, boiling points, trl) but now i watch i used to be fat and jersey shore every so often. its just gone a step too far tho

  • Oh boy, the memories. I'm in my mid 40's, and I'll bet there are a lot of you guys out there who are my age that hear this song and have a flood of memories coming back! And wow, remember when MTV used to play music? Good times man....what happened?

  • @smitty195 i think im one of the few in the 'youtube generation' that wants MUSIC TELEVISION back :(

  • Our gym teacher has a DDR for one of our stations, and me and my friend got this song. xD

  • What happened to good music being on MTV? Why couldn't still be like this?

  • wow...i remember when MTV first came on and waiting and this was the song...oh the days no commercials MTV what happened to you

  • US Corporate greed and a complicit US government killed MTV, the music video, American pop culture, creativity, spirit & freedoms ... in essence, America.

  • You can thank Viacom for taking MTV, VH1 and CMT in the toilet. I would would make a suggestion to flood Viacom's e-mail box and tell them "I want my MTV back".

  • @timtaylor2001 great idea...lets tweet and use social media for something productive.

  • LE.GEN-DA.RY

  • trevor horns kind of like super sexy :p

  • why in gods holy name would there be ANY dislikes to this video?

  • The idea behind the song can be traced back to how the rise of "talkies" (movies with spoken dialogue) destroyed the careers of those actors in silent films whose voices wouldn't translate well to sound pictures, as depicted in the classic 1952 Gene Kelly movie Singin' in the Rain. As for rock n roll, there were bands whose looks wouldn't translate well to TV. I like the song and the band, but for the best possible example of this, search Kansas Dust in the Wind.

  • So Do This Means That MTV Killed The Radio Star.

  • mtv back then was awsome something that you could have turned the tv on and listen to music butt now its a peace of shit with no music at all just shityass shows

  • 360p we meet again :/

  • I'm 15 and I want the old Mtv back not t5he one we have now because theold one seems like more fun!!

  • how many are only watching this because they saw Pentatonix perform it and wanted to know what the original song was like? cause that's the reason i'm watching it

  • @JaneAustenLover1 >>I am watching this cuz it is a great part of my past. i was 21 when mtv aired this 1st video. plus the song is wicked classic.

  • Thumbs Up If You Noticed Where Nicki Minaj And Will.I.Am Got Thier Beat For Check It Out

  • The outdated nature of this song makes it even funnier than it was intended because we went from DVD killed the Video Star and Streaming Killed the DVD star! lol

  • shows killed the video stars

  • @opatronico

these days every idiot thinks he or she's a popstar, and todays youth is buying it, because they didn't grew up in the 80's, so we can't blame them that they had to grew up with no musical taste at all, and have to deal with al the horse shit todays wannabe stars trow at them.

  • Vice City anyone?

  • it's all about making quick money now..

  • the man playing the keyboard at 2:57 is the award-winning movie composer hans zimmer.

  • i dunno whats more ironic..the fact that the very 1st video on an american (at the time) phenomenon was made by a BRITISH band or that the exact same band was making a video and bitching in it about what they themselves were guilty of doing!.

  • typical whacky Mtv video... but we loved it back then..cant beleive its been 30 yrs....:(

  • The little girl in this video must be about 40 years old now.

  • @Perlinator67 i was born in 88 and im 23 so may be early to late 30's

  • @tomhansonlover The little girl in the video looks about 9 years old. If she was 9 years old in 1981, then she would be 40 years old in 2012.

This is just a rough guess on my part, as she could have been 8 or 10 in the video, and I don't know when her birthday is. I'd say she could be as young as 38 or as old as 41.

  • First Song Ever Played on WHAT WAS MTV !

  • What the fuck is this ?

  • @kanneebannee It's a great song set to bizarre visuals; everything a good music video should be. I don't fully understand what all the visuals mean, but I enjoy this video enough to watch it multiple times.

  • IT WAS CALLED MUSIC TELEVISION TO PLAY MUSIC!!!!!. NOW IT PLAYS EVERYTHING BUT MUSIC. WHAT THE FUCK!!!!! THUMBS UP IF YOU THINK MTV SHOULD LIVE UP TO IT'S ORIGINAL NAME AGAIN!!

  • @Lowgaen11 YES, I miss the days of turning on MTV just to see if my favorite video's were on! It was like radio with vision back then.

  • @Lowgaen11

MTV stands for Most Terrible Video's these days.

  • @Lowgaen11 >> i am so with you on this.

  • @Lowgaen11 Agreed there is nothing but shit on both VH1 and MTV. That's why I hang here and watch it all here.

  • @smartiepantzbabe69 VH1 does some special every once in a while

  • @Lowgaen11 I ALSO ENJOY SCREAMING!!

  • @Lowgaen11 The viewers stopped watching was a major problem and TRL died. They dont care about what was on tv the internet/youtube is the big thing now days.

  • @LagBoy86 And now YouTube is about to go to hell in a hand-basket with all the un-wanted and un-needed major changes that google has planned for it.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel what is google planning to do with YouTube that's so bad? I hope it doesn't turn into a pay-to-upload service.

  • @PsionNinja Well, that was one theory, but it has more to do with the new Cosmic Panda layout that has people screaming. I've heard rumors that they nix'ed that idea, but it still says on my channel's home-page that all channels will be rolled-over to the Cosmic Panda layout on March 7th, like it or not. Cosmic Panda is difficult to navigate, hard to understand...it looks ugly and it lacks a great many features of the current design. There are apparently no customizing options either.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel It's essentially the death of YouTube. It's a process and it's going to be accompanied by a whole slew of Internet regulations. Count on it.

  • @BMcbugger Don't you know it! I worked for quite a while building and customizing a personalized channel for myself here...some like it and some don't...but their channel's as well as mine are about to loose their individuality here because of all these un-wanted changes that are un-needed and totally disliked. YouTube is gonna' change into something unrecognizable...along with a whole slew of new regulations and monitoring systems here...it was fun while it lasted people...but now it's over.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel The world is changing. The American Revolution - The French Revolution... The train... The American Civil War - The defeat of Napoleon... The lightbulb, airplanes, and perfection of the internal combustion engine... WWI... The Russian Revolution... WWII... The atom bomb... The 1960s... MTV... The fall of The Wall... Internet... The creation of the Euro... 9/11... Social media... Now 1984's Big Brother is looking to emerge all over the world. Crazy times.

  • @BMcbugger Big Brother is now global. And we're only one, nuclear terrorist attack from Big Brother being mandatory...and in that moment, the world will change forever...and we'll not know what we've lost here in this country until it's gone.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel You know, I watch old videos like this, and I think back to when I'd go over to my cousins' house and watch Mtv with my older brother and my cousins. Then we'd go riding bikes around the city. We'd go to an arcade. We'd go to the river and chuck stones. Reagan was President, and the Cold War was there, but we felt confident we were the good guys and that we'd win some day... Wtf did we know after all? Neither college or religious warnings prepared us for this.

  • @BMcbugger Well, bankrupting the Soviet Union was the right thing to do. We knew that they had suitcase nuclear devices in their stock-piles, and there was concern that they may fall into the wrong hands once the communist authority collapsed, but again, nothing was done. And all these years later the threat has been ignored. The logical target would be Washington; which would eliminate all three branches of our government in an instant and turn us into a police state in a flash. It's coming.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel You are a moron. If they had them...they would have sold them...and Washington would be dust....period!

  • @astraeos123 Oh God, another piece of shit living in a God-damn fairy-world! Take your head out of your ass stupid! Muslims have had them for quite some time now. Did it ever occur to your stupid ass that terrorist and Muslims wait for certain calandar dates to launch their aggression? Like maybe December 12th, 2012? Or even December 21st, 2012? Making those dates 12/12/12 and 12/21/12 respectively? That's significant for them...but apparently way too over your God-damn dumb-ass head.

  • @Lowgaen11 Yeah thats true but wouldnt that mean the crap modern programmes would be replaced with crap modern music? I dont know which is worse.

  • @Lowgaen11 every thinking person has to agree with your position. the ruggles were the perfeect selection to start the MTV era. It is too bad what they have become,

  • @jmaxcamp ik rite.

  • 115 dislikes? Nice Try Jersey shore

  • un señor tema, recordar es volver a vivir

  • luv this song

  • fuck me....

    *Turns on GTA: vice city"

  • Love this song it's one of the bigest from 79 and 80's!!

im 15 and im soooo sorry for what my generation did to music

this is better than most of te crap thats out there now

i hate nearly all of todays music

80'S WILL LIVE FOREVER !!!!!! from epicsnicker

  • So what was MTV before music videos?

  • ♫♪M P 3 Killed the Video Star♪♫ (I still love this song,...thumbs up if you do too)

  • In the 80's MTV was like a great-tasting meal, with flavor & variety... now it's like what comes out of the other end

  • what does video killed the radio star mean??

  • @jakester0852 What I can understand is that radio and radio-stars were popular, but when video came around, everyone stopped listening to radio and started watching videos...

    That's what I can understand.

  • @forsurenoob Reality killed the video star.

  • i love this song!, thank god for gta vice city or i would never heard this song!

  • A classic. An absolute classic.

  • i was look this video in mtv, when mtv nothing wachintg

  • MTV music videos use to be a great way to pass some time or do a little work around the house and turn them on and watch or just listen. Videos were fun and quick. Some videos were very artistic while others were exciting...but the most important thing was that they all had to be both entertaing as well as creative...which is exactly what MTV is not these days. There's absolutely no creativity or entertainment on MTV at all and the days of video were as classic as they are dead now. MTV is shit.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel agreed except for Beavis and Butthead

  • @MrSchultzstaffel beavis and butthead is good

  • @KaelanFournierTV There was a time-slot for MTV cartoons. I use to love the futuristic "Aeon Flux;" I believe was it's name. "The MAX" was interesting...and "Bevis and Butthead" were entertaining from time to time. But that should be no more than 10% of over-all air-time. MTV videos had to have a good tune, an entertaining video to go along with it and it all had to be presented to the viewer within about 2 and a half minutes. That requires too much creativity for the MTV designers today I see.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel I agree 100%

  • @TheScottjp Hmmm...I just left this comment in passing a week ago and it's already the top comment here? Well, who knew? But I stand by what I said...MTV's program line-up of today wouldn't have lasted a week 25 years ago. The entire network would have went down in flames with the shit that they produce today. But the programing of 25 years ago, (with the videos and retro-music,) would be a tremendous ratings grabber today! But audiences have changed. I don't recognize them, (or MTV,) anymore.

  • @MrSchultzstaffel MTV is anything but Music TeleVision these days. i miss it.

  • @catinthemachine Reflecting back on it...the MTV of yester-year took a tremendous amount of creativity to keep it going. You had to have a number of musical artists who had actual musical talent who sang good songs, produced good music and were able to tie it all in to a video that was interesting to watch while MTV took the work of a large body of these artists and broadcasted it all for the viewers and then they let the chips fall where they may. But condisering the lack of talent these days..

  • @MrSchultzstaffel They need to find a new way to entertain because now you can find all those videos whenever you want on Youtube and such

  • @evthemev They could present it all in a different way if they chose to do so. They actually have the rights to all those videos, so if they want, they can have them all exclusively on their channel. I can't believe that we've degenerated from this fun and creati
