Seeing it with mature eyes again all I can say is that it was a major disgrace, a shame for the german football and for every fan.
And, it lead to a change of rules. From that tournament onward, the last games of the group stage will always be carried out at the same time.
Looking back now, you have to wonder why FIFA never changed the rules following Agentina's victory against Peru in 78. I personally don't see much wrong with the way this match went. Its much like some world cup matches of today

Not the same, the other two teams of the group were playing at the same time and if Honduras scored, Chile was out. In 1982, Argelia had already played the thrid game of the round.
seems like Germany should have scored like 3 goals in the first half, and maybe 1 more in the 2nd to beat them 4-0 or so. I see why FIFA schedules the 3rd game of each group to occur simulataneously so that teams can't conspire like this.

Neither team were attacking hard, but they were still making tackles and taking shots. It looked exactly the same as when you watch a team nowadays holding onto their lead and tightening things up to keep the score low. The difference is just that the losing team were also tightened up to prevent going another goal down. It wasn't so much a fix, as a stalemate.

A few cups ago, Mexico and Italy found out the result in the other game would qualify both if their current result stood. There were about five minutes left in the game. Guess what they did? They just passed it back and forth. Austria and Germany knew they'd both go through so why the hell risk injury cards. It's wrong but they did what they had to and the rules were changed.

Btw, I also think that from the clip, it is not that bad, but hearing the ARD narrator really tells the whole story.
