@rrz518 - I would if they flew out of Philly. They don't operate IN the US so it's kind of a moot point. That and I don't want to have to go through Dubai to get to Cape Town. A friend from ZA starts training as a flight attendant for Emirates in June. The advantage Emirates has is that it's a national carrier which the US doesn't have so it's heavily subsidized. Take away the subsidies and watch what happens.
Deregulation ruined air travel. I flew on Pan Am in 1970 coming home from Europe on a family vacation and it was like being in a nice hotel. And that was coach. Once they made flying more available, people who had never flown and have no manners or class were able to afford it . You want cheap, you get cheap. Hey, Billy Bob, your $139 fare doesn't cover the associated costs so you have to pay them afterwards. Thanks a lot.
There's nothing wrong with many airplanes from this time (1978) if they are maintained corrently and have the expected safety updates (like improved latches on the cargo doors). Heck there's planes from the 1940s still flying fine.
I do miss OZARK! Flew them to GSO in '86. An airline is about the most expensive AND difficult business to run. You've got FIERCE competition, fuel costs, strict regulations, high maintenance costs for the planes. It's labor intensive requiring many employees & contractors, high operating costs, labor unions, weather delays, and as of late, a poor economy! It's these reasons airlines are having such a difficult time these days. Cutbacks MUST to be made, but NOT in safety, but in amenities.
airlines suck because they dont charge enough for the tickets.
when the stupid public wants safety and service back, they will pay for it with higher fares. until then, it appears the public can handle a few crashes every year with hundreds killed. Kinda sad really but you get what you pay for.
@beergut111 im not so sure the gen public accepts nonchalantly air crashes but i do know what you mean ppl are desensitized, even 1 crash to me is unacceptable; i have a real penchant for air safety. I hate the loss of the airline culture of which safety was a huge part ; its more mechanized now. fortunately, the overall safety record is improving. great video showing chicago skyline, im surprised they picked such a foggy/ovc day instead of pc or sunny nice video though!
Believe me, it's not the flight attendants' fault. Airline management today is trying to squeeze every last dime out of any revenue earned. The flight attendants simply have nothing else to work with as a result of cost cutting, which comes from the top.
What's coasterboy smoking? "lazy flight attendants"? Blame the cost cutting on liberal president jimmy carter who signed the airline deregulation bill into law in 1978. That's why most legacy carriers are now defunct (Pan Am, Ozark, TWA, Eastern, National etc.) and flying today is comparable to greyhound bus service with wings. Every time I fly now I curse jimmy carter for crowds, the masses flying, peanuts on a cross country jaunt, and grumpy airline employees. Can you blame them?
A meal flight on STL-ORD...those were the days. Now you're lucky to get a glass of water...lazy flight attendants.
While not Ozark, I remember DC-10s between Cle and chicago on UA. sandwich and drinks in first. Now the flight attendants say flight isn't long enough for any service. FAs are just plain lazy these days.
As a fellow FA I would *love* to give you anything. Hell, I'd setup a buffet in the back. Really, it's the airlines who have cut back service and the FA's have just gotten use to the current standards.
Don't blame the airlines or the airline employees. Blame liberal president jimmy carter and his deregulation bill he signed in 1978. Look it up and educate yourself.
from airline family; I'm referring to good service in the 90s. Then unions had to have better work rules in the 2000 contracts. EA gone due to completely inept mngmnt; PA huge mistake buying Nat'l; AA got the valuable parts of TWA; PA flying 747s everywhere before ETOPS not viable...we'll see how Delta Am does. You're really on something if you think Carter is responsible. Ending air socialism so you can fly for peanuts. Great commercial but I'm sure the STL-ORD fare was like $500 or more.
You must be a liberal. Quite it with the entitlement mentality. You get what you pay for. Adjusted for inflation it would cost you $2,000 today to fly transcon. Compare that to about $300 nowadays. Thank jimmy carter everytime you sit next to the smelly fat guy that can't contain himself within his assigned cattle car seat. And as far as EA it was the labor unions along with deregulation that did them in. Kinda like General Motors isn't it?
Yes, deregulation, increased frequency of flights and low fares which now allow the masses to fly. And as far as Pan Am the international routes that it enjoyed was opened up to competition and people were unwilling to pay for service and would rather sacrifice that for price and frequency of flights. That's why you now have crowded planes and traffic congestion. Yes, BLAME CARTER.
Love these old airline commercials, but so funny how stewardess says "we've got 10 non stops from St louis to Chicago (as opposed to stopping in Peoria) haha.
well at my company, if it saves $5 dollars they would prefer you take the connection in Peoria and waste 6 hours...no joke...I've had to make connections on 300 mile flights because the nonstop was too much.
Old classic US Carrier that served mainliy the midwest- not particulary clever advert- but it was what would play well in the Midwest in the early 70s
