  • AAHHHH just stumbled across this choooon!!! It was on the movie Old School wasn't it ??! how did i not have this already. This guy is a hero !

  • co-written by David Rawlings.. another american treasure...

  • This is such a cool song. I wish i could have been there to see them perform this. It seems like theyre having such a good time and its always awesome to see a group get along that well. Ryan has so much talent, hes been influenced by all the greats and im sure he will inspire many more great artists to come. I cant wait to see what he does next. Also everybody should check out my channel! Thanks to those who do

  • What a song!

  • Gorgeous and fun! Can't be the location and the cool hats either.

  • This is my favorite version of this song. No need to compare Adams and Dylan. If u prefer Dylan, im sure a million of his videos/ songs are on youtube. Go there and gargle his nuts

  • old school!

  • These lyrics are the truth.

  • bob dylan

  • Fantastic song. No matter who sings it

  • getting high is so much fun. I love this song too!

  • written mostly by david rawlings and put on ryan's heartbreaker album. watch his version 'live at amoeba' or something like that - he and gillian blow this out of the

  • All of you shut the fuck up and listen to a good song.

  • I'd sure get high.

  • I love Dylan and Adams equally and for different reasons but the funny thing is the people saying Dylan is better are in a way saying Adams is as good by comparing them in the first place (and vice versa).

  • this video is weird

  • Stop by my hand to listen to my band coving RA songs. Thanks Ya'll

  • Adams is Adams. Dylan is Dylan.leave it at that.

  • dylan is dylan, the one and only Bobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb Zimmy Dylan

  • Who cares about comparing Dylan and Adams? all we can know is that Dave Rawling's version of this song with Gillian Welch is better!

  • Dylan's body of work=Untouchable-Adams is fantastic though.

  • Remember one thing, there would be no Ryan Adams without a guy like Bob Dylan. Personally I'm an Adams fan but thats my opinion and to each his own.

  • Adams is great, sure, but no Dylan. Come on now. We've come to far at this point for that kind of ingenuity to exist... really.

  • All the talk about Adams and Dylan, but nobody seems to give a shit that he co-wrote this with Dave Rawlings. Where's the props for him?

  • Nope. Props. Dylan... write many things with different people. It is all good music. Actually, some well known blues artists say Ryan Adams is one of the most talented blues artists of this generation.

  • MAAAANNNN, OHMAN! WOOOOHOOOOOO!

  • Oberst, Adams, Petty, Springstein, Dylan, Elliot, Guthrie...believe me the list goes way back....are all part of a continuum that has branched out from the previous generations.....the latter wouldn't have happened without the inspiration of the former...and the former matters more because of the artists that they have inspired who have come into their own. Your opinion really only matters to you....but if you miss the point that I've made then you really miss the spirit of music through time.

  • @ShapiroJones you are a genius...

  • @nunavailabul haha...and you're a rock star prophet

  • cool!

  • Hearing how full these guys can be with this set up makes my wanna go buy a snare drum alone and see what I can do.

  • Amazing songwriter, definitely one of the inspired ones of the generation.

  • Dave Rawlings is better then Adams... and Dylan!

  • @jonosur Skin is better than bladders and jaw bones. Copper is better than sodium and iodine. Blue is better than orange and black. Left is better than up and right. P is better than ... Or maybe you just prefer something else. Is it only 13 year olds that feel the need to fill these comments with 'better thans' or 'bests' ?

  • @Sointula2 Are you the f**king post police? I stated my mind, based on comments I read about the arguments between Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams.. I just thought people should know that David Rawlings helped create the song, and he is better at guitar then both Adams and Dylan. Thank you for your post about whats better than random objects, mine was at least on topic.

  • @jonosur Good point.

  • @Sointula2 I just think nobody knows Rawlings like they should, the song sweet tooth has some epic guitar work But I do agree, there is a lot of pointless comments out there

  • @jonosur Aunt Jemima is better than Mrs. Buttersworth.

  • @propolispills Mrs. Buttersworth is way better looking...........

  • so much soul in his music. damn

  • People that argue and etc on youtube vids are so annoying. I bet if Ryan was around before Bob then they'd say Bob isn't as good as Ryan, you can't judge something because of it's time. New can be good too, and Ryan Adams isn't just good, he's fucking epic!

  • Well, that and that Dylan has written literally hundreds of great songs. Ryan's written a couple good ones.

  • I actually stumbled on ryan adams after hearing people compare him to dylan, because I used to listen to dylan alot at one point in my life. now I gotta say though, I prefer ryan, he actually has an incredible voice and most his songs are actually great, not just average with a few gems. plus he plays with many different genres... surely the best singer-songwriter of our time

  • I love this sound... true folk!!

  • he can sing on smack...bottom line nyc days

  • your an idiot ryan adams isnt anywhere close to the same league as Dylan....

  • anyone know where this was filmed?

  • It was filmed in Jamaica as part of Music in High Places.

  • jamaica!

  • i think in jamaica.

  • @hamdelsun

by the color of the sand, I'd have to say Dominican or Jamaica. Apparently Jamaica :)

  • @crypticcreations Yup, this is off of his DVD "Music in High Places" in Jamaica

  • Why are people wasting time comparing two incredibly talented songwriters... Ryan Adams isn't Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan isn't Ryan Adams. There is nothing to compare.

  • For me, Ryan Adams is the kind of salvation I was looking for after Bob Dylan... I like to think he's the Bob Dylan of the modern days, but I don't put their talent to compare.

  • @casher1978 This guy is on to something.

  • Bob Dylan - Its alright ma

    End of discussion.

Ryan Adams is talented but not like that...

  • Ryan Adams = Amazing

But Bob Dylan's in a different class completely, you can't compare him to anyone.

    Seriously.

  • the main difference between RA and BD is that RA gets more personal -- BD is not as personal...in my opinion. Who cares why. Just different. I grew up on BD but much prefer to listen to Ryan.

  • Wow there is NO comparison to Dylan, this is a awesome song, but lets not get carried away. Comparing ryan adams to Dylan souly comes from the sound of there voices, THATS IT ! Pull the catelogs, Dylans ealier work is political, progressive, insightful and socially significant. Ryan adams is just cool to smoke a bowl to or to role the windows down to.

  • i fully agree man!!! But I would easily say that they are both Geniuses! I think what the comparisons come from are both of their abilities to have so many different genre capabilities and to pull them off well and make them 100% their own.

  • WOW ! OK I'm not gonna waste much time on this guy, I will pan through the shallowest parts of Dylans body of work HURRICANE which aimed to bring awareness to a corrupt system that wrongfully inprissioned a man who was innocent, have you ever heard of the Civil Rights movement, Bob Dylan is known for being one of the most influential artist for the Civil Rights Movement...I'm sorry but you're out of your league, what point are you trying to get me to prove for you ?

  • most influential, awareness, shallowest and league. these are all words that create emotion in a person. through creating and controling, or manipulating, emotions you have attempted to mislead the readers of this comment log into believing bob dylan lead the crusade against communism. Look at it like this: young freewheelin' Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams were only young once. Perhaps if instead of getting "high" while listening to Ryan Adams, you listened sober, you may better understand.

  • Comment removed

  • Really should stop comparisons to Dylan. They're both wonderful in their own right, in their own realm. Two different musicians in two different generations who's music is about and played differently from one another.

  • Great performance of a classic song! Well shot

  • i don't think anyone who is a complete douche could write a song like September. :) no disrespect meant to anyone, but... please.

  • obviously it was filmed in kansas

  • where was this filmed?

  • In Jamaica. There's a whole DVD

  • Can't tell where the string goes - can someone point this out?

  • Dylan/Adams= NO COMPARISON. I like them both, but SUCH a stretch comparing them to one another.

  • i disagree

  • ok ok--so i got lazy with my post. obviously there are comparisons, but Dylan really is in a league of his own--if you disagree with that I'd love to know why... While i respect his talent and think he's written some great songs, I also think Ryan Adams is a complete douche, so it erks me to see a complete douche get equal props to one of the finest songwriters ever.

  • well sure he's a complete douche, most "artists" are, and yea, dylan is an entire league of his own, but ryan adams has released 20 original albums in a little oveer 13 years...and he's full of passion and as talented of a musician as i think anyone out there today. i mean he's no jeff tweedy or paul mccartney or bob dylan, but they're no ryan adams either.

  • Funny - not sure who you're calling a douche but I'm sure it applies to either... LOL. Love both of them and must agree with you. Each is their own and you wont find another. Dylan came first so sure Ryan has likely incorporated some technique that Dylan honed or perfected. It happens. This is a great video and people need to accept it as such and move on. Both are great in their own ways.

  • exactly.

  • ope nevermind I hear what your saying !

  • When are people going to give up on finding the next dylan? Man this argument gets old... why can't someone who plays acoustic guitar and harmonica not be compared to Dylan for once... let it go people.

  • The difference between Dylan and Adams is: Adams can sing.

  • whaaaaat :S

  • Dylan can sing, he just chooses not to sing in a classically aesthetic way. sometimes the tone of a song shouldn't be pretty.

I like both, but Dylan will always be above Adams

    (LOVE this song)

  • bob dylan rocks man dont dis him dush

  • Comment removed

  • agreed

  • I dunno. If you ever listened to nashville skyline you wouldn't doubt dylans singing ability. And Ryan doesn't really have the greatest voice. he's just really, really good at fakin it and thats totally respectable. He's a lot like bobby actually cuz he assumes and conveys a number of different vocal idioms as a stylistic choice.

This is an awesome video by the way. Definitely worth owning.

  • @antifafubel Weak.

  • @antifafubel I love Bob Dylan, but I have to agree with you. Ryan has a great voice. Bob was more culturally relevant and, perhaps, "ground-breaking", but they are both awesome musicians, so who cares I guess

  • @antifafubel - Although they do sound similar I would say that neiother of them sing well from what I hear. That didnt stop Dylan , Cash , REM and it looks as though it wont stop Ryan Adams either. Im glad that someone is able to support themselves doing something other than screwing the public and selling porn here in the USA.

  • @antifafubel I find this comment incredibly stupid, I will not even point out why

  • @antifafubel Oh ya, he's a regular Buble'

  • @antifafubel whoa dude, not cool Dylan Can sing

  • @antifafubel The difference: Dylan is indescribably better at writing lyrics.

  • @Rorypmccarthy Don't you mean lifting them from books?

  • @antifafubel i love ryan adams but dylan is better

  • @antifafubel I like Ryan Adams but come on Dylan might be the greatest songwriter of all time.

  • @antifafubel haha. sorry that was too funny. Yes Ryan Adams can sure sing. I really like his voice.

  • It's the polar opposite of a Kenny Chesney video. Shot on an island location; only the song is actually good and the band is tight.

  • Dood this song is the shit!

  • ha that's the same guitar he used in the letterman performance of come pick me up, is this filmed in negirl?

  • I first heard ryan adams when he opened for Oasis. Honestly i liked ryan adams performance 10x as much as Oasis.

  • just good taste, i reckon

  • I reckon ur right hatgirl.

  • hahah

  • nice video, love the new york video that is shot in the same location

  • I think this is from Adams' Music in High Places DVD.

I haven't ordered it yet, so I couldn't say, but when I read that this was on the DVD and thought of this video, I assumed that was the case.

  • He played this last night in Nashville.. I'm going to another concert here tonight and then to the final concert in Atlanta Friday. I will miss him :(

  • Not his last concert....he said he was taking a step back, but not going away

  • we just dont know how long he is stepping back. could be awhile

  • Could be awhile, could be a year or 2

  • this is a great ass song!

  • he sounds like devandra banhardt in this

  • i was sad

    then i got high

    :) :) :)

  • classic

  • Is that Mr. Pemberton on the drums? Love it!

  • Yes it is. Pre-Cardinals. Ryan certainly picked the right drummer though.

  • sick

  • Sounds like bob dylan,.. Makes me want to watch old school again.

  • thats crazy you said that cause me and a teacher at school said the exact same thing last week when a student came to school with his album and played it in the shop

  • I love Ryan, He is truly amazing. This is a great video to have because of all the raw versions of these songs but its really odd. its like a travel log he should of rated some local cusine as well. And what is with all the differnt hats? its distracting and funny. He is really talented. Buy the video its fun.

  • i bought the DVD for like 5 euro's. it was a steal! there's great stuff on it and the sound is DTS

  • this one time, i was relee high and my buds bro came singing this song on his guitar it was sweet

  • is this one on the DVD? Don't remember seeing it

  • whats with the wrong notes sung at the beginning of the chorus?

  • what is the song in old school when they walk down the steps in their blue uniforms?

  • This song sounds so much like Dylan, I just assume Ryan is intentionally imitating him. Ryan easily changes his voice to different styles.

  • When I heard this song in Old School, I just assumed it was Dylan. Just found out it wasn't moments ago.

  • I thought it was dylan too, I'm honestly shocked to find out it that it's Ryan.

  • The full title 'To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High' is also Dylanesque, like 'It's Alright Ma (I'm only Bleeding)' or something...

  • i mostly liked that song in the movie old school!!!

  • Reminds me of Dylan

Song sounds similar to Subterranean Homesick Blues

  • or Maggie's Farm

  • One of my favorite songs!

  • lol real ass song. cant describe life better than this

  • love this song man!

  • yea hes the man

  • what a singer!

  • i like his hat <3

  • where is this video from? some tv show?

  • ryan adams in jamaica dvd

  • this is a great ass song! i never listen to new music but my friend told me to listen to this song and i love it.

  • brad rice is a cool guy.

  • Just listen to the song douche bags. Don't compare. It's a great song!

  • ye man old school rocks.

    frank the tank ;)

    mfg

  • Great Song!!! Takes me back to my hysterical laughter while watching the film "Old School". Man I wish they made a soundtrack for that movie.

  • this song sounds like the 64/65 Dylan/ Beatles thing. Great stuff

  • I've got this DVD, the whole thing is great.

  • Yeah, Ryan is my favorite musician ever. He is just has such a huge selection of great songs.

  • Fuckin' A that's such a great song.

  • permeable rock

  • this sounds like a bob dylan song, im a huge ryan adams fan and every time i hear this song it reminds me of a dylan song

  • Yeah, the start of the chorus sort of sounds like Boots of Spanish Leather

  • Wow, he looks like John Lennon in the Help! movie -- same sunglasses even. I like R.A. but it's a little creepy.

  • OLD SCHOOL BEST MOVIE

  • guys, shut the fuck up and listen to this tune

  • I love how the drummer starts hitting Ryan's guitar headstock at the end haha!

  • Haha yea, Ryan breaks a string, then he starts hitting his guitar. Haha, thats great.

  • great stuff.wish i was there playing along.

  • Dylaaaaaaan

  • like the best song The La's never wrote

  • I'm guessing this is taken from the Live In Jamaica DVD...I've still not seen it, so this clip is v cool. Nice one. Loose playing, but kinda funky too. Love the drums...would have been a cool session to be nodding along too!

  • Its because i watched old school the other day i was looking for this song.

acoustic version is def better :)

  • Its a good song. Loved it since I heard it in Old School. This acoustic version might be even better. Ryan Adams sounded like a douche in that other live version at the beginning though. Just my opinion.
