For the rest of that season I kept expecting them to bring him back somehow. I couldn't believe they killed him off. I don't know if the actor wanted to leave or the series or if they just decided it was time to follow the films and the early comics where they'd killed off his father. For that matter the 1950s Adventures of Superman TV series killed off Pa Kent in the first episode. Smallville's Jonathan Kent though was a great character and I was sorry to see him go.

@dancersdream7 Apparently they decided that since he died in the Christopher Reeve film that he should die in Smallville too, that the death of his father helped propel him to become Superman. In Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and in Superman the animated series, however, they managed to keep his parents alive after he became Superman, so they really didn't need to kill Jonathan.

This song IS haunting. I really resonates with all the grief I have buried inside for all the loved ones I've lost, including my own father, who died two years ago. I think that in this episode Clark lost not only his father, but Lana too, as exemplified in this scene by her releasing his hand and walking away.
Please don't get rid of this video it's so perfect and goes with the song I like this one alot it's allways been a favorite even before I got a youtube account.

The reason they couldnt use this song is because they used it in a previous episode. The episode where Clark finds out his birth mothers name then at the end hes in the barn and this song is playing..they never play the same song again...only theme songs :)

So they used the same song in the same season for two different episodes and with the same character: Lana. That's not why they didn't use this. They probably just felt Peter Gabriel's I Grieve fit nicely and it did. Though I do love this song. Just not for the funeral. Would have liked to see it used in the following episode Vengeance though.

Heart attack...First Lana died after being hit by a bus. Afterwards, Clark goes to the Fortress and begs Jor-El to undo her death. Clark is presented with a crystal allowing him to go back before she dies. He takes steps to prevent her death and actually does so however Johnathan has a meeting with Lionel in the barn. During this meeting, Lionel reveals he knows about Clark's true origins and Johnathan, protecting his son, gets into a fight with Lionel. Due to the fight, his heart gives out.
Yes, it does fit Jonathan Kent's funeral alot more then the song they did chose I know Jonathan had to die but it broke my heart to see it and afterwards everyone just seemed to forget about poor old Jonathan Kent not even a note of recogniztion seemed to come up all the characters and fans just stopped talkin about him thanks for sharing this...

This song is BEYOND powerful. It's subtle, the melody is so haunting.
