This is nuts. I have Basset Hounds and they are all VERY vocal, This is not a sound a dog in distress would use. Also, his ears are erect, another sign that the dog is relaxed. My Bassets use that same howling when they are hearing other dogs in the neighborhood. It is a way of communication, not a sign of distress. And even if it WAS a sign of distress..so what? Don't we all get a little stressed now and then?! Lighten up.

The only difference between cats and dogs: Dogs are extremely dependent and want to please you. Cats are usually independent and want to show you love and be loved when THEY feel like it....which in my experience has been most of the time. They can care less to CONSTANTLY please you, which is not a bad thing. I would not necessarily want to be pleasing everyone ALL the time either. I have had cats all my life...22 in total.....none of them lacked affection towards me and other family members.
I love them both as pets. It's worth loving both for their whole life. Currently, I only have 3 cats and 1 dog....my other dog just died a month ago :(

1. The dog is voluntarily sitting there.
2. The noise is entirely regular... if that pitch/frequency upset him he would have a lot of trouble just walking around.
3. I have two german shepherds, they are a very vocal and intelligent breed.
