This is so wrong! You'll need a ferromagnetic foil to reach the purpose as mentioned in this vid... Aluminium is not the material to reach such purpose@@ Faraday said one millimeter of ferromagnetic material will be able to prevent vulnerability to an EMP@
After all, your mobile phone does'nt work after an EMP event... The network was taken down.. But your phone still works :D
Will your cell phone work if the towers are fried? will you be able to get on line or even watch TV if the infrastructure is fried? What will a hand cranked radio pick up if the transmission stations are fried? If someone starts setting stuff like that off some good camping equipment and a bow will be your best bet, if you can get out of the city's before someone eats you for dinner!
what if you make a box with many layers of protecting materials. It could be waterproof and EMP proof. You could also say that it is more enviromentaly friendly because it is reuseable. or mabey i'm just on crack.
I put my electronics in homemade Faraday cages then in small Pelican cases, then in a small , fireproof document vault(Available at WalMart, Home Depot, Target for less than $50). Safe from fire, water, EMP, and because the vault has a key and it's bolted down, safe from the family/neighborhood crackhead. That's provided that the crackhead has easier options for rippin' off.Never under estimate the ingenuity and determination of a dope junkie, or a solid citizen who hasn't eaten in a week or two.
kinda pointless to have all of these things covered.... internet for comps would be down, cell phone towers out, and the power grid would be blown out. I mean, maybe for your car, but good luck getting enough tin foil!
You are assuming the person deploying EMP against us is totally effective. The more likely scenario is terrorist deploying high from a building, or intermediate range launch. If that happened I don't think you would have worldwide collapse, and order could be restored sooner than you think. If everyone just prepared a little it would go along way to a quick recovery.
If it was a small scale incident, I wouldnt be too worried, depending on an area. Although, I think it would be much more cost effective for someone to build the thing to affect a large area. And if that happened.... Better hope you have enough food and ammo, and are able to get enough water.
Not really, an EMP destroys vulnerable electronics such as transistors and micro controllers, unless the vehicle is "hardened" it has computers that help run and regulate the engine. The car won't go anywhere without its computer, unless you get an old model without the computers.
Batteries, and solar panels I would think will be ok, but inverters, charge controllers etc. would be at risk, anything that has small circuitry with microchips, processors, and that sort of thing. I have posted some really good articles in the info section to the right, must read.
Most* electric cars have a DC to DC converter, if it does then this part of the car will fail. If the car only has batteries and a dc motor and a switch, it can survive, if it has an inverter and AC motor it will fail.
only cars with onboard computer would be effected, old fashion cars have a high survival rate because the are simple in circuits, no transisters. if the vehicle is off then it might not harm it either.
Forget the cellphone you need a hand crank short wave radio! They cost less than you think. Put it in a faraday box. Geiger counter with spare batteries. C. B.radio with large antenna. Put in a faraday box.
A strong EMP would require a shield which is many feet in thickness from solid lead, a certain distance from the wall, grounded/not-grounded in a certain way.
if i were you, i would make a faraday cage for a Solenoid.... if i learned ANYTHING from War of the Worlds, i learned that EMP takes out the solenoid. hahah. hopefully it wasnt just a hollywood thing......
from now on i'm never going to let my car get below half a tank... thats enough to get me 300 miles away from everyone. Luckily i already live in a forest, so i wont need to go very far.
When this happens it will be instantaneous dissaster so its not like you'll have time to hang up the cell, put it in a ziplock and wrap it in foil. Plus the cell towers will be trashed from it so no service anyway. Only the elite's satelite phones will still work.
I recommend getting a 3x3' carboard box and wrap the crap out of it and keep it in the basement. If you can put all survival electronics in there and keep it safe.
yeah exactly protecting your stuff is meaningless if the power grid/cell towers are all knocked out at once .. your stuff might work.. but you still cant use it with the exception of ham radio /generators
all you haters sucks.good video man.i tried it and it work just great.if anything ever happens thats what you should do with regular radio to communicate with each other(we all know emp burns out ic chips)by the way what the hell you haters doing watching this kind of video dont you brain death fools got a brintny spears song to watch on mtv .you people make me sick
That would have been worse. Sorry - didn't mean to upset you with my comment - it's just hard to concentrate on the topic when your having your brain bashed in. Thanks for posting.
I tried this and the phone never rang. I tried it with just foil on the top and it leaked. A full surrounding kept all signal out. Again, what good is the cell phone when the cell phone tower is fried?
A clock? A camera? Flashlight? Alarm? Maybe as a comfort item I.E. Listen to the MP3 you had on it or even watch the movies for those that are capable to do so. Then what about Iphones will their apps work without a "signal". I have seen them have several usful apps like the level (tho I don't know how well it actually works) Maps (non gps) and whatever else someone has made that could make them useful! :)
I would suggest keeping a backup to the backup. If the EMP goes off and the smart people then pull out their faraday cage shielded electronics and think they have out smarted the bad guys just to have a secondary detonation a few hours later to knockout the remaining backups. Only the really smart fellas will have the coms. That is what I would do if I were to send an EMP. send two, spaced out and your damage will be greater. What will this do to digital watches?HMMM
Cellphones are only as good as their network and all the multitude of components included in that. If they are not shielded your precious phone is useless. CB, Ham, 2-way radios are the ticket. Keep them disconnected from their antennas when not in use and in a "Earth Grounded" faraday cage. If it is plugged in it can be zapped. That means antennas and power supplies.
Before you guys start laughing at this idea ..... try it for yourself ..... IT WORKS !
I understand basic digital tech ... and the fact that the cell phone did not go straight to voice mail , shows that the cell site did not know the phone went out of range ... but it became "out of range " basically acting like I had pulled the battery out while it was powered up . The phone did not respond once I sheided it with ... yes .... cheep tin foil and the plastic bag shown .
Atmospheric nuclear testing was banned, not for environmental reasons, but because of EMP... Apparently one of the last atmospheric test's EMP in the South Pacific killed communications and power grids 600 miles away in Hawaii. Powerful stuff, and the surge follows the utility wires right into your home or business, frying the componants inside of the 'metal boxes'. Difficult and expensive to shield from. Peace.
From what I understand, just about all electronics in your car are bonded to the chasis ground, which does not shield them from the outside voltage coming in, which in effect doesn't make it a viable Faraday Cage. Items must be insulated and no opening such as windows to allow voltage transients to pass through.
Very small minimal openings would be ok due to the long wavelength an EMP travels. Please refer to the article at the right in the info section. Thanks for commenting!
I did a little reseach today and Its seems as if you are right. But I just don't see how aluminum can reflect magnetic fields. I also found that copper can be more effective.
ummmmm...... how is aluminum going to protect from magnetic feilds? I don't think so. Aluminum doesn't reflect magnetic feilds. If you think your right then point me in the direction of were you got your info. But as far as i'm aware this isn't going to work.
Thanks for the comment - I have provided a link to the right. Just click the "more info" section. It's the 3rd link at the bottom, and the information is mid way through the page. If you also do a google search on constructing a faraday cage, several pages point to this idea.
Don't you need to ground it, though?

Not really important according to the articles I've read. It said in some cases it may even be detrimental to do so.

The cell phone towers and substations will not survive a EMP but at least you can play games till the battery goes dead.

If they are the same ones that gave us 9/11, the cell towers will be shut down, "for our safety" of course.

it breaks the circuit... bending and burning mechanical and electrical components with the pulse/ wave.

if you bury anything about 2 to 3 feet down it will be protected from an EMP blast of a decent size..
but if it's a nuclear blast the emp discharge is the lest of your worries
