  • this video is very useful i'll be glad to enjoy learning this to fuse it with my handwork

  • so cool thx a lot ive been looking for that for so long!ima be a rock star in club yeah lol!

  • my advice to anyone learning is if it doesnt seem like youll get it keep practice, if your frustrated just stop and come bak when you feel relaxed again....trust me im 19 and i weigh at least 240 pounds

  • i dont hav a big mirror sadly lol

  • thanks chuck to be honest ive already learnt the first 2 steps somewhat

practice goes along way....and its exciting to see myself catching on

  • best housetutorial on the net!

  • self-learning is all i can do right now

  • is it even possible forsomeone with no dance experience to learn house dance on his own

  • all you need is to download the video from youtube, use the slow motion or frame-by-frame-view function of media player classic, a large mirror and a lot of practice

in the end you will be a good dancer :-D

  • nice..song name please

  • Point taken. Lol

  • i wish the soles of his shoes weren't white, you can't see when his heel touches ground

  • I wanna bring some house to my Toronto peeps = )

  • yeah everything is great but where's the house music already playing?

  • is there a way that you can teach it slower?

  • yea its way to fast .. But i think caleaf isnt going to make another one. I see that he has a studio in asia somewhere and looks very busy. I see another video that has one of these steps in it but it is very simple and shows each step. Its called "house dance basic training"

  • oltre ad essere un ballerino bravissimo..insegni molto bene...e in modo chiaro!!!

    ciao by sicily

  • yeahh i like house now ... but guys imagine a krumper doin house ..hahahha just 2 funny hahahahha

  • if you see caleaf in the clubs.. dammm he does more than that.... this man is mad sick on the flloor!!crazy styles..

  • hahaa.. nots not even enough steps.. you ve got to the clubs.. the whole steps... with the whole different styles of house or lofting..

  • Wow these are already a lot of steps.

  • I agreee with ash1sgv626, just put together what you know, and feel the music

  • just so everybody knows. the term "lofting" came from the dancers at dave mancusos famous "the loft" underground club in nyc in the 70s this type of dance became the basis to what we call house dancing.larry levans garage and jellybean benitez funhouse also were trainig grounds for house dancers.peace and keep dancing.

  • u gotta feel the muzik, one u got that. ur body just goes with the sound.

  • does it look good or rediculous if u dance like that on the dancefloor?

  • where you from kid? as far as the nyc and chi town scenes every one dances house style you got to see it in person or a good video on here. he was just showing some of the basics that you would need to know to learn how to dance house but this man gets down for real... house music is a soul thing too you just have to feel it

  • AsH1sGv626, what about Indian tribe dance ?

    is that 'ridiculous' too ?

  • actually, a lot of cultural/ tribe dances can be found in variations in today's modern dance styles. House can relate to both Indian and African styles of dance.

  • Thanks for the response.

I am too old to start housing, plus one can't really LEARN rhythm, you are born with the talent to dance.

  • not true dude...

    i couldn't top/dance before..

until i hurt my shoulder and all i could practice was dance.

it'll take a bit. practice some moves and get really comfortable with the music. you gotta feel it.

  • ありがとございます

  • whoo!

  • could not agree with you more

  • wow, this is freaking awesome. thanks for posting this. i've started taking a house dancing class, but everyone already knows the basics, so this is really helpful for me. thanks!

  • for some that has not idea how to dance these moves are great!!

  • I live in NY which is where the house dance masters and brian green are. Perhaps Caleaf too. I would love to learn this dance. I have been learning boogaloo and popping forever although I got my start at house dancing. I want to segue into this style and bboying.

Question: Is he using the ball of his foot for most of this? Thx

  • i myself use to house at famous spots such as the Garage, the Latin Quarters, The World... what i can tell you is this you gotta practice your basics and slowly intergrate your own persona to it..classic songs such as (Raze:break for love,SoHo: Hot music,Robert Owens:I'll Be your friend,Marshal Jefferson:Move your body) are classics to get the house vibe and understanding...because hose is a feeling you express thru dance..good luck on the discovery

  • if you cant dance to hardcore or trance. maybe pick up some "juke" and "jit" styles. if you dont know: theyre the hardcore house and techno styles out of chicago and detroit that evolved for faster more agressive dance music.

  • Thank you sooo much for this video!

  • its got some tap dancing elements

  • everyone talks too much on this video.

just shut up and learn. stop with this arguing, u kno nothing of this culture/ dance. your a student. even the great pioneers of this dance are students too, i am a student as well.

    its a learning experience...this journey.

  • Good talking, let the ignorants open their shithole they have instead of the mouth and keep doing ur thing my man

  • no i mean that they are gross

  • those shoes are so nasty

  • hahaaaaaaaaa

  • Thank You Very Much! This is very useful thx!

  • Man, I haven't seen this video in YEARS, this video is SOO OLD.

Im grateful to see it's up, though :)

  • where exactly is that vid from, are there sequels by caleaf or dance fusion?

  • Not that I'm aware of. I'm sure there is some stuff out there, but it must be very, VERY hard to find.

  • can someone tell me the name of the song in the background? i love it.

  • it would be tight if more house instructional videos were avail right now. theres only like two or three. most ravers NEED some dance lessons.

  • hell yeah they do .. i try to catch a good dance circle at raves hear in l.a. and it never happens, maybe 1 or 2 other ppl that can get down really usually

  • that's because they stoped playing house at raves around 1992. now it's just terrible trance and hardcore. you can't dance to that bullshit.

  • i am sorry, but saying this is a move and just doing it is not teaching. real teaching involves step by step break down of a move. if i am teaching someone a flare and say "this is how you do a flare" then do a flares in a row and stop and say practice that......it is not really teaching

  • yo dude dont when you teach talented people you dont have to. there are several levels of teaching and the worst is when people who never do it or dont have a clue stand next to you to learn. this video is cool and for the trainned eye its easy to pick up. for untrainned its much harder when i say trainned i mean with dance experience.

  • a very useful video

  • really nice tutorial... is it an instructional video you can purchase?

  • Good stuff, i like the shoes aswell!

  • This is REAL please....... Understand. do not endorse any other... Peace

  • Awesome!

  • american housedancers with a touch of bboy rythm, thats my coup of tea! Thank you for the lesson Caleaf.

  • dude the first one is so hard!! i can barely see his feet with the white background wow..

  • The best tutorial that I have seen on the internet by far. You make it easier for everyone to understand.

  • Dude I just want to give you KUdos ... For Makin this Basic House step Video ... Freakin Awesome ..... LOve it ... Much Love and respect .. From Cali ... Muah DeeLicious

  • i cant get like any of these and iv been tryin to figure it out for ages LOL

  • house dance remindes me of chill toprock moves form bboying and c-walk ^^)

  • Does someone know if this video comes from a DVD?

  • It's cool that nowadays there are videos like this where people can learn the basics. Back in the late 80's to early 90's we had to hit the club every weekend and watch guys like Caleaf and those before him in order to get the steps down. The third one he showed was by far the hardest to pick up without anyone teaching us.

  • i got the first two down!...the third..uhhh not so much...lol...the third one is the dopest but the hardest =[...

  • dope comments. I enjoyed reading through the pages haha. but i agree about it being debatable. Although i myself categorize House as a generalized term of styles, I feel that the styles are more/ and should stay as free expression. Yah, it helps to know your basics for timing and transitions, but on the real when i see newcomers in the dance scene stick to regimen and dance stiffly it makes me sad. Thats not what house music is all about.

  • Do you have the next part?

    This is really good!!!

  • wow, i always thought house steppin was easy BUT GOD DAM shit is hard to do T_T. nice video though :)

  • So good man! great!

  • I pray you're not under the impression that taping came out of the white folk culture? cause that would just be down right stupid. also if u could read, this is the fundamentals of house dancing, some of them at least. so don't be stupid and hate? all that angers not good for u :)

  • spankyquest gotta shut his fuckin muth cause he dosn't know shit bout dancing...that's why noone knows who he is.

  • can you do it more slowly ??

  • mdr codo t partout c bien toi tristan ?

  • now, hold on a sec.

i can do all those steps and i can even dance the charleston, but i can't house dance though i love the music.

  • You have to feel the music. Most people who dance "house" or dance to house music, have not taken lessons. It's soulful.

  • yes, I agree.

However there was a on going argument about applying a label to this form of dancing. I think the general label is suitable, these folks aren't performing ballet.

  • This dance is an unquantifyable, formless

expression -- it is all dances yet it is none. It can't be pinned down, yet all I see are cats dancing in this predictable skip-to-the-loo bullshit manner. I don't care how much history there is to the "Jack", I think it's downright dumb. The very act of making the dance an object to be studied misses the point entirely and is therefore absolutely ass-wrong. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HOUSE DANCE.

  • House is the father of all grooves & This is Jack's House

    Ya better ask somebody

    1

    Doncer

  • You've made some valid points, that's why a lot of new comers in the house scene do these familiar steps. Most of them are taking classes just to learn this form of dance. As for "there is no such thing as house dance" well, house dancing is what you make of it.

  • I've been into house since the mid 80's and I learned on my own by watching others and by incorporating all the dances I knew including hip hop and latin dance. Basically, that's what made me the dancer that I am today. Although I don't dance like how I used to, I still have my own style and can still get down in the clubs.

  • House music is going to become even more mainstream then it was in the 80's in the years to come and we'll soon be seeing it in commercials and other mainstream providers look at B-boying (it's stuck between the underground and mainstream). Unfortunately these are the facts. Caleaf still gets props for making this video because he has to eat and he knows what he's doing. He's one of the founders!

  • Founders of what? The dance these so called "teachers" are doing today are what rave kids did all throughout the 90's. There's no coordination in this whatsover. House music is sensual music, smooth as silk. The above isn't versatile: you can't do it with a partner, not to mention it's ugly as fuck. The BEST dancers I've seen drop very controlled afro-latin style dances that'd blow your mind.

  • I guess you're not too familiar with Caleaf, Ejoe, Terry, Marjory, Brian Green, Peter Paul, Conrad, Archie Burnett (Voguer) and some of the other talented dancers that brought house dancing to light in the 70's and 80's (they are not new school dancers, most of them are in their mid to late 30's and even 40's).

  • I noticed that you have Cricket on your profile page. Who do you think gave him inspiration? The same people I mentioned above. Rave kids throughout thee 90's? Been there! Raver's danced nothing like this.

  • These steps are real old school, do you actually think Caleaf, cricket and other top House dancers would actually teach students their exact steps? That's what makes them who they are, their signature styles! Even if they did teach their style it would look completely different on the next individual. Check out the Founders video on Crickets page!

  • I do have Cricket on my profile page, but even he tends to get carried away with his dance. Most of his videos, while athletic, are also wild and lack real control. And I've mentioned this to him before. Hitting the floor represents a whole other vibe, not one that I'm used to, and I've been on this scene over 20 years.

  • You're absolutely right, Cricket does get carried away although he is real talented. I'm not big on hitting the floor either, but house dancing originally did start out with a lot of slow floor movements, spins and some acrobatics if one was capable of doing so like lofting.

  • In my opinion, Lofters are the best house dancers because, they show real control not to mention I became a better by dancer by watching lofters dance because, they do their own steps and tend not to dance the typical styles like you see above.

  • The best two house dancers are Ejoe Wilson and Cebo, check out their videos. Also check out the Next Generation house crew site (nxgnonline . com) to see Cebo in action, he's real good, he's never off beat or wild with his movements. House music should control the dancer not the other way around! But, I do think one could benefit from these dances if they add a lot of creativity to them, like Caleaf said "play with the them".

  • Once again, THERE IS NO HOUSE DANCE. Purge it from your consciousness! The fact that you label this shows that you and everyone else treat it as an object to be used for fame, fortune and friends. For precisely this reason, you will NEVER truly feel house music. You can't become the vibe if you place yourself here and the vibe over there. Real housers don't say "I house dance." They just do. As long as there is even the least bit of consciousness of this thing, you will never freely flow.

  • "labels" are sometimes useful, labels serve a purpose.

for years,I've seen people in the club dancing like this but I did not know a. how to describe the dance. b. what they were doing.

Housedancing is a useful term to GENERALLY describe this type of dancing.

But youre right, some of these folks are athletes, they aren't just dancing, they are back flipping, somersaulting, headstanding, breaking and "housing" all in one dance.

  • Who do you consider a real houser? What is a "real houser"? Are you even comprehending what you're saying to me? Houser is abbreviated from house dancer! Do you dance to house music? Enough said!

  • Their is no particular style of dancing to house music just familiar styles that particular individuals tend to stick with. Therefore, they become popular styles or techniques in which some people incorporate to this form of music. Hence, it becomes a part of the culture through the form of "DANCING".

  • Capoeirista's even perform/dance to this form of music. House dance is a variation of many dances in which the individual becomes one with the music through the dance. It's not a dance routine or choreographed fatuity! Where in any of my comments do I show praise to fame and fortune (this is not b-boying or mtv in the hood hip-hop so, stick to the topic at hand and please do not digress)? House music is "underground music" for the underground community that lives for it, not the mainstream.

  • Now, if you may, please eradicate the ideology of "THERE IS NO HOUSE DANCE" from you cognitive thought process. Learn your history and then get back to me. Keep away from the mainstream, it's bad for your health!!! Seriously!!!

  • ma bad but wat is dis iduno even knw wat type dance dis is i knw its tight though

  • It's called house dancing (Jacking, Lofting, Footwork) those are various forms of house dancing/housing. It's danced to house music (not to be confused with mainstream club, trance or techno music). Check out some of the videos on my page to see more of these dance styles. Peace!

  • preciate it

  • Caleaf, your video is wonderful and generous too! I love the fact that you gave the history behind todays house. I remember the paragdise Garage days, Sound Factory, Zanzibar and on and on in the late 80's.

  • .... ohhhh!!! is that how you do it???? I always did it this way (check my house dancing vid) and I'm 49 years old!!!!! oh, BTW, check my Locking and Popping, Cabbage Patch, Wop, Raindance vids too.... but now that I see Caleaf's instructions i'm going to make some more videos... peace out!

  • aha.. caleaf.. wow .. this is first time seen your video.. dayum men.. i did nt know your instructor for house dance... you look just regular guy in APT club.. at wednesday. ..i know your steps is ILL men.... im just there rollin with chey .. only asian filipino guy who dance house, lockin, pop, and break lol

  • can you please please put some more step videos like this PLEASE????

  • word bond fam i remember you eijo henry and your crew from back in the sound factory era, we conneted in nells and even went head up a couple of times. It does my heart good to see you still keepin that cultural artform alive... Stay UP Fam Knowledge Knowledge

  • ok friends.. nice and good to gather knowledge.. can any one tell me where can i find the basic foot work. thanks i guess i learned some thing from this video.. thanks for posting this video miklabret.

  • House Music is from chicago

the jack, the root of house dance was born in chicago

All the modern footwork u see was developed in NY.

Lofting is from Jersey which predates house and break dancing. late 70's!!

  • Sorry, may I know what means by "Lofting", what kind of move it is? thx thx

  • Almost !

  • First off, what exactly is this clip from, because it looks like it was ripped from a VHS? I may pick it up.

And secondly, I really wish he'd slow down the second step a bit so I could really get a feel for it...

  • the best person in my opinion across the water house dancin is Meech from O'trip House

  • Nice! I was lucky enough to get some classes from Caleaf, trully an amzing dancer and person, I pay much respect to him. peace[[]]

  • house is danced differently in the uk, london ,than in the usa ,the uk way is much better as its classical where the us is more breaking from break dance.

  • it's classical? learn your history. House dancing started in the chicago as did house music. and it's origins come from nu-juck swing with influences from latin and even jazz. breaking and house only came together much more recently and if you knew anything about either styles of the dance, breaking and house are Completely differant feels and philosophys

  • sorry i misunderstood what you were saying, my bad

  • "uk way is much better"

Haven't seen anyone out of the UK that can touch the guys in NYC.

  • you have nno idea what you speak of man..i would do some research.. and homework if i were you. you'll be amazed at what you find.

  • i think what ur talkin bout in the UK is not exactly house, but something that can resemble house sometimes--called uk jazz dancing or "bebop." when you say "classical" i think you mean bebop/uk dancers like irven lewis & brothers in jazz, or perry louis' "jazzcotech dancers." these styles relate more to bebop, tap dancing & even ballet. however, that does not mean the US house dance culture rejects influence by classical forms.

  • hi dan

  • i think what ur talkin bout in the UK is not exactly house, but something that can resemble house sometimes--called uk jazz dancing or "bebop." when you say "classical" i think you mean bebop/uk dancers like irven lewis & brothers in jazz, or perry louis' "jazzcotech dancers." these styles relate more to bebop, tap dancing & even ballet. however, that does not mean the US house dance culture rejects influence by classical forms.

  • no it is house my friend ,even adeva and monie love got into it in the early eighties, with respect ,great house tune ,that is classic house .

  • black angel: i'm an american dancer currently working with & seeing dancers from both countries. having lived all over the US, as well as in europe-- i say the US is much bigger (obviously) & has so much of everything... both "classical" & bboy influenced house dancers. we also have lofting styles (floorwork & smooth), jacking & stomping (more african & full body/upper body), & vogue & wacking dancers from gay club communities.

  • this has all been done in london my friend ,america is only just cathing up ,lofting, vouge, etc all done in london clubs like ,lip stick ,garage city, minostry of sound, if you come to the uk let me know so we can meet and i may show you . for real.

  • In the UK, i hardly see house dancer; however i see many jazz/bebop dancers--it's a different style. if u have been to US, u will see many different styles of house. yes, there is a lot of bboy-influenced dance, because house culture is increasingly based on competitions & cuz bboys love footwork. house is club dance, and a spiritual connection with music 4 me. but it is being spread worldwide most these days thru formal, set up battles. & who thrives on competitions most? bboys!

  • my friend you have been looking in the wrong place ,house n garage music is every where in LONDON ,which dates back to 1985 when it exploded here ,artists like voodoo ray, frankie kunckles, and ten city etc....

  • anyway, the point is--there are classical & new influences all the time. the beauty of house & club dance is that it evolves organically and is open 2 a variety of influences. clubs like paradise garage were safe-havens 4 gays. if gay people & straight people can dance together--blacks & whites can dance together, etc. u will have many different styles. i always say "house is a home." under this roof, there is a place for everybody.

  • very true i agree.

  • hey friend can you upload more basic of house dancing.. ne way thanks again cya

  • I rEally WaNtEd to learn "hOuSe DaNcInG" thanks a lot for uploading this video.. i hope you keep postin the basic..yes you sure are good teacher and also a good dancer

  • Only when you know point A can you move forward, progress or evolve. Thanks for breakin it all down. You're a great teacher and dancer.
