i had the same problem !!! i had hairy green aglae and red slime . so what i did was i needed to get my phosphate at zero !!! use a phosphate reactor and upgraded my protien skimmer , did a 20 % water change . in a mouth every it all clear up .

how big is your tank? have you had your water tested? goldfish and turtles are particularly messy to boot. if you're growing algae, it's because you have an accumulation of nutrients and light. to fix this you have to control the following:
1) limit the amount of light is given to the algae
2) keep up on your regular water changes
3) limit the amount you feed, feeding more is essentially fertilizing.
I upgraded my lighting so I could start some corals and had a bad hair algae outbreak. Zero nitrates and phosphates my water parameters are perfect. So I reduced my lighting period by a few hours and that seems to be helping it. The only thing is when the lights come on the water is cloudy for about 30 minutes. I guess thats the algae dying off.

the best way i found was to reduce my light duration and increase water changes. but at the moment, i attend university 45min away from my tank during the week, and another live rock has had its own hair algae growth. i added a mature turbo snail, and he alone keeps my glass algae free, outgrazing my 4 astreas by far. right now i'm thinking of adding a young tang or foxface to deal with the hair algae.
I bought a sea hare and it cleaned my tank in 2 weeks. I then took it back because they starve once it's all gone

hi i have the same problem in a fresh water aquarium ,,,,i have 2 goldfish and 2 usa yellow belly/map turtles ...why and how is it growing

I put a scopus tang in my tank and it ate every last bit of hair algea and he's still lookin for more...
