I have an idea, roll off the throttle just after the launch and then ease onto the gas. You could also short shift following the launch, effectively negating any wheelspin. Even after taking off the Renault was close to the rev limiter until the impact. With an "experienced" driver the R28 could go 0-100mph back to 0 in the time it would take the Ford GT to hit 80mph.

OK, some facts . This was the '08 car with no traction control. Mohammed Bin Sulyem was driving. He is multiple Middle East Rally Champion so, yes, he can drive. He had some practice in the morning and the day before on a deserted desert highway, during this he expirienced some 'launching difficulties'. IMHO I think he gunned it so he didn't stall it in front of his 'home' crowd and the resulting wheelspin let the car drift sideways and hence, into the barrier. Credit to Naj for the commentary.

@oilydan: some parts of that are true, the race was, after all, a demonstration of the power and capabilities of the F1 car compared to the Ford GT. that car was actually the secondary car, which they brought in last minute when they ruined the engine of the primary one. It was actually the tyres that hadnt been changed, they had been worn down by the rougher tarmac on the desert road earlier in the day. This caused a dramatic loss of traction under power, and a catastrophic loss of control.

With all due respect, Ben Sulayem, as good as he is am sure, has just discovered the difference between driving a rally car/lamborghini/Mercedes & etc of his fancy cars AND.. a Formula1 car that has an engine idle speed of 6000RPM.

The bet F3000 drivers get shocked when they switch to F1, so I think he should have taken his time instead of whacking the throttle.

Also this is hardly a traction issue, google it & you'll see what tyres the car had.

they showed a clip of it in F1 practice. according to Bob Varsha, the driver is 14 time Middle East rally champion. i think he underestimated the car being a 14 time champ. from the SpeedTV video and from the sound of the car accelerating, he was burning out from the line but even with the rear wheels just free spinning and smoking, he just kept on the throttle and kept up shifting all the way up to what sounded like 3rd gear.

Sorry, but you're wrong. It's actually this years car. If you look closely at the video, the car has a fin on the engine cover that has only appeared on the car since 08 season. The 08 car had a dark blue section on the engine cover which this one does not so, therefore it must be the current car.
