  • African School for Excellence would like to thank MIT Senseable City Lab for some of the computers that helped us run our pilot program in Accra, Ghana. These computers are still being used by ASE staff in Ghana and South Africa.

ASE has developed a new model for high-quality, low-cost high school education. To see some of the students who are benefiting from the ASE/MIT partnership, please check out the video on our youtube page.

    Thank you.

  • @mxmagicus Believe it or not, the computers came with cameras built in. Amazing, right? And in terms of their permission, all of the people receiving the computers were volunteers who were made fully aware of the project, agreed to having their images taken, and anyone encountering the equipment would see the giant sticker in their native language informing them of the project and camera activity. Please read the description before making ludicrous accusations.

  • @alt4ir If that's the case, than it's cool, but it's written nowhere in the description.

  • @mxmagicus The youtube description fits a limited amount of detail. The link provided to the project documentation states: "The volunteers and recipients of these machines were fully informed about what these computers do and the goals of the project. In addition, we attached stickers to each laptop explaining the project in the local language."

  • @mxmagicus As the recipient of the computers in Ghana, and can state definitively that we made sure to inform all users that they would be recorded while using the computers, and even offered a way for them to block the camera if they felt uncomfortable.

  • Printer cartridges do travel alot. Much more than I do in fact.

Do you trust your laptop? There might be no sticker on it, but still...

  • How about talk about REAL dead devices that end up in Africa?

  • So, you donated some laptops to developing countries, but before that you installed some spy software to take snapshots with the webcam of the owner without them knowing? Great...

  • I really hope the devices' new owners were aware they were being recorded... complete invasion of privacy otherwise

  • @Zuggible Not to be a big bum hurting man. But sadly. Most of these people dont have the same rules and laws as "we" ( i use we loosely here ) do. So invasion of privacy might actually not mean jack shit.. Once again.. sadly. :/

  • @Zuggible Yes all of them were brief-ed before the start of the project - second, all the laptops had large stickers declaring that the photos are being collected. In fact, people were really happy to share their pictures and felt proud to be part of a fantastic project. Privacy is a after all a cultural construct, and interpreted differently around the globe. Plainly put - the organizers were very sensitive to the issue, and spying was out of question.

  • lul. what if someone jacked off

  • This is really cool MIT. Now please figure out how we can effectively recycle the wasted material and come up with a way to explain it to the average folk.
