The smell from the garbage of spoiled food was bad enough, not to mention the smell of dead animal carcasses, biological and chemical hazards mixed in. Can't imagine what it would have been like in 100+ degree heat.
they were driving old pickups, and to carry a decent amount to justify such a dangerous trip and the expendature of gas of their personal vehicle, they would have had to bring a trailer.
that woulda been spotted by bandits way to easily to make it a successful trip.

yep. Houston was lucky, but the people in galveston and freeport had to go without water and power for 3-4 weeks at least.
