@starsoldier1 ROFL...ya that's a really good website. I like how he does not overrate every duo game like Pc-engine Universo. PCE Universo is built on bias. On the other hand, I think you are a very harsh critic sometimes. I almost cried when I saw your ratings for Ecco tides of time, landstalker, and Fatal Fury speical (pc engine). joke, but it's ur opinion so its cool. But what I did not agree is that you said fatal fury speical on SCD is better than PCE. in SCD lot of BG detail is missing.
This game looks depressing. I remember my friend had a Tg16 and another friend came by with weed and this ugly game and tried to trade it for Dragon Spirit. We laughed so hard that we thought the weed wad awesome. Then we realized we were laughing at the stupid trade offer.
Oh, one more thing: People complain about the lack of plot, but if you play for long enough, then starting with the epilogue to dungeon 5, hints of a larger story start to emerge so there might actually be a plot if you're patient enough to get to it.
The thing about Double Dungeons is that to enjoy it, you have to be a fan of old school dungeon crawlers. If you are, then Double Dungeons is one of the best ones out there because it's much easier to pick up and play than most other games of this type. Despite my first reaction (indifference), I find myself coming back to this game again and again. The simplicity of the gameplay is kind of addicting and it's really grown on me a lot. It's actually one of my favorite TG16 games now. Who knew?
It has the same walls throughout so that it's easy to get lost. It's supposed to be a maze.
Also the two-player mode looks pretty interesting. I wish there was a Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey like that.
Regarding the password/level select, you can't select the last level (the pink one) until you've beaten the others. I'm a little confused about how this works, but I read the instructions at vc-pce.com and the more favorable review by The Brothers Duomazov.
@matt29171 Yeah, I should of said in the review that you need to collect parts of the password in the 21 levels first before you can access level 22. If a maze game sounds fun to you where you have to start from level 1 each time then maybe you might like it better then I did. As for me I'm done playing this one.
@Nintendough I don't know, even with a map and another player the game is still very tedious. I can't get anyone to play it with me either, at least not for very long.
True. This game needed an in-game map in the worst way. Or at least some different colored stripes on the walls to tell the hallways apart. Throw in some warps in the larger dungeons, and it's a pretty solid game.
Even without those things I still think it's closer to 35/100 (3.5/10) than 15/100, but maybe I was overly patient with it. :)
@Nintendough Having the whole game taking place in these dull looking corridors just killed me on the title. I would have gladly rated it highly if it a built in map and had more designs to the walls.
@AquariaSpirit I can see why people would like this two player 3D role playing game but you need a lot of patience especially since the game is very repetitive and you lose your experience points if you want to start another dungeon. If you liked it that's OK.
I'm trying to get into this game. I just beat FF1. I can't figure out the password system. After you beat the boss it's supposed to give you a password right? When I beat level 1 it said " password input number01 2". none of that makes sense. And what was that password thing you did in the middle of game play?
@smokester74 Sadly that "2" you earned is just the first character needed to enter the final stage (level 22). You have to start each new stage back at level 1 I'm afraid.
@starsoldier1 So I need to collect 21 charaters, right? Do I have to do/collect them in order? And what was that password thing you did while playing a level? P.S. your comments on the game really slowed my enthusiasm to beat the game. So I downloaded Zelda 1 to recharge my fighting spirit!!
@smokester74 Yeah, there are 21 characters and you have to put them in order once you find all the numbers and letters at the end of each stage. Very screwed up. Agreed Zelda 1 is much better.
Final Fantasy, Wizardry, Might and Magic. these games and their series were top selling through the 80s and 90s.
Even going to obscure platforms, games like Phantasy and the silver box D&D series were some of the top selling games. I'm sorry, but citing that DD sucked and that RPG games weren't popular in North America during the time is just plain false.
@malignantpoodle Final Fantasy was huge in Japan but we didn't even get two of the original Famicom releases and titles like Wizardary and Might and Magic were doing well on PC but bombed on the consoles like the NES and Snes. There are only a handful of RPG's for the NTSC Turbo for example.
Your statement was that North America didn't care about RPG's in the 80s.
You're wrong; I've given you some of the longest running series of any game of all time which still sells in the US.
You were just wrong. Hate DD all you want; there are many of good reasons to. But to say that North America was no market for RPGs is just flat out ignorant talk.
@malignantpoodle Whoa, relax dude. I didn't say that we didn't care about RPG's, I just say they were not as popular as they are now and you have to admit that, eh? I wish they were more popular too dude and it's a shame we only got some of the RPG's from released. But if you think I insulted you by saying RPG's were unpopular here back in the day I'm sorry about that. Forgive me :D?
I think your review and your videos are excellent. The only thing I'm in contention with is this;
"Why would you make this? RPGs aren't even popular here in North America , at least they weren't in the 1990s".
That's just wrong. In the 90s, RPGs were some of the biggest selling games in North America over everything else. That's the only thing I'm contesting.
@malignantpoodle Thanks and yeah I can see your point too. I just wondering why NEC would approve a game like Double Dungeon and leave RPG greats like Far East of Edan in Japan?
the japanese have always been bloody daft in how they choose which of their games to export, count yourself lucky you live in the usa and not in europe especially concerning shmups as we dont get any
i live in the uk and i would say it was later off in the 16 bit era that jrpgs really took off, thats apart from zelda types which had a big following everywhere
@TrevHead10 That sucks dude. I heard there are not too many JRPG's in Europe because of all the different languages companies would need to translate.
its kinda annoying for us in the uk since there is english versions made for the USA but we dont get em cos were braketed with europe. Imo it would make better sense to make the UK and EIRE part of US and Canada distribution.
ur probably right since the console was released in limited numbers as the TG-16 i would of guessed that America would of handled the distribution.
I wish the TG-16 would of been bigger and i had one as i would of loved the games moreso then the MD that i had as a kid (the only games i would of missed would of been Sonic/ SF2, SoRage2/ Warsong and a handfull of rpgs inc shining in the darkness that plays like this game only better) Unfortunatly as a kid i didnt even know of the TG-16/PCe :-(
@AquariaSpirit C'mon, I'm not the only guy to bash this game before. There are better, more indepth RPG's for the Turbo like Ys Book I & II and Order of the Griffon.
Yeah, playing this hurt like hell! I remember getting some maps from a old Turbografx-16 hint book and the last dungeon was just insane there so congrats on finishing it. The game could have been so awesome if it played more like Phantasy Star but no such luck.

45/100 if you've got a map to follow. 55/100 with a second player, and 95/100 to whoever that brave person is.
