The South invaded the North twice during the War, and at Gettysburg in particular the South suffered heavily and were forced to withdraw. The North suffered heavily in many battles in the South, but had the men and resources to refit again and again.
If the Confederacy eliminated a Division from combat effectiveness. They would again face a new division with fresh men and added ordnance. The South was trying to swim up stream against a monstrous current.
This is a slow and inefficient style of warfare. Wouldn't it have been better to quietly sneak up on your enemy than to have drums pounding and bugles blaring... announcing to the opponent that you are coming and giving away your position? And the guys holding those flags... it's almost like having a "shoot me" sign.
Man the strategies during that era sucked. One general thinks, "Hey I got a idea lets charge toward a hill where they have open view of our approach with muskets and a bloody cannon!" No wonder why so many people actually deserted.
It had been a few paragraphs long but I dont recall any other fighting in his time in the war but Ive heard of a several instances of blacks fighting for there lives during skrimishes and battles.
I dont give a rats ass if they were sent to fight or they were just cought in a fight there all damn heros everyone of them.
@zipsrule i know right, they wouldn't of taken to the ground by the wagon like that, they would've just marched through shrapnel and shot and musketball until they got in range
What happnened to Bernard Elliot Bee dieing scene after those words .... and he was not fat he was fit and strong refered to as a "lion" and handsome but i don't blame actors oh yeah with long hair so yeah this film has alot of holes xD
Terrible as a war movie. Most of the battle scenes are apparently skirmishes at the company level. Union officers are absent as if a sergeant runs the show.
These videos just isn't depicting the civil war as accurately enough. The devastation of the civil war is so immense, it was the most horrendous war ever for America. The injuries caused by the firearms of that day, I do not think it will ever be made into film.
Sorry to crush the nostalgic feelings to the civil war buffs. That is the reality of it.
Wow, I didn't realize while watching the movie how crappy a job they did at recreating this battle. They make it seem like a puny battle, and I'm pretty sure there was no fence for the Confederates to hide behind (1:30). Gods and Generals does a much better job at recreating this battle.
@wazzle552 Yeah. They had Hueys back in the 1800's. They would light up the forests with missiles, and the Battle Of Gettysburg was actually won with strategic airstrikes and Napalm runs. That's why it was the bloodiest war in American History. Poor Medical practices that led to death due to gangreene infections, and Napalm.
Sadly though they found no intelligent life, just two groups of barely evolved primates who threw away reason and civilization for their base animal instincts.
@darthroden The reason you would see a helicopter for any reason is because The Blue and the Gray was filmed on-location in Arkansas, and do correct me if I'm wrong.
ugh so horrible in it's depiction of the battle, I swear did anyone in the 30's-late 80's pic up a history book to see how it was or did they just have the worng impression from the outset
If anyone didnt know the union troops with the funny looking hats and pants, those troops are in a Pennsylvanian regiment that where gifted those uniforms in either a marching contest or a rifle one.
@smfan2000 look on here under the title black confederates and also look up a man named H.K. Edgerton, he is a black man who knows and speaks the true history of the black folks who fought for the Confederacy by their own free will, some of the best cavalry were blacks under general Forrest, his history had been distorted by northern propaganda as well.
@smfan2000 There are many well documented cases of blacks serving as rifle-carrying members of Confederate units. British Colonel Fremantle provides details of seeing a Black Confederate escorting federal prisoners to the rear at the point of the bayonet. Now that must have been a hard day for those federal soldiers. Blacks in Confederate service received the same pay white soldiers and stood beside them in the battle line and not in segrated units as in the federal army.
@TexianPride yeap. and If Confederates were so bad,to blacks, why they hadn't made mutiny when 900000 of 1100000 man on the south gone on war? more of it, they were helping to keep up the farms and so on. the five civilised tribes were creating the cavalry regiments in confederate army too.
@tomenicus The Conderacy also had a force of a somewhat loosely organized militia known as the home guard 1861-1865' used track down and capture Confederate Army deserters. Identify and suppress local civilian disturbances.
One of the most notorious of these was the "Independent Rangers" led by early Old West outlaw Cullen Baker. In late 1864, this band was responsible for what became known as the Massacre of Saline, when they murdered ten unarmed men from Perry County, Arkansas.
@TexianPride Confederate blacks numbered a mere 2-3 thousand indivuals served in engineer and support units.
On April 10th, 1865' as Confederate prisoners blacks were being marched from Sailor's Creek & elsewhere to City Point & eventually off Northern prison camps, a Union chaplain observed the column. This incident along the retreat to Painesville, seems to be the only documented episode of "official" Black troops serving the Confederacy as a unit under fire.
@fluffy1931 Most blacks were not sent in to fight officially most instances Ive found were blacks thrust in to battle during an ambush situation where they were in the middle of a firefight and picked up a firearm to return fire.
I wish I could find the article again a few years back I read of a formor slave who gave an account on his experience in the war it went along the lines of his company being cought in an ambush and he joined Confederate forces to repel the attack.
always been very interested in this war, but i've never heard of this mini series. As a northerner I have alot of respect for the Confederate army's spirit. Cheers and RIP all those killed

@ZACHCOX123 I can't argue the economic shit hole situation. When you're right you're right. I suspect it's the only time in your life you have been right though. Take your own advice, though, you interrupted me with your ridiculous "fuck you" comment. There may be people wiser than I, but it CERTAINLY isn't you after THAT ridiculous shot. Now, do we need to carry this on? Or can we just end this as it is. We'll never agree so we're just spinning our wheels here.

Of that number an estimated three thousand FREED blacks were in combat.
