hey, if your mantis is still alive im VERY suprised. g.smithis are prone to shell rot under high inensity lights, especially metal halides. id be suprised if it survied the 10months
Hello, you have a great tank and I have a few questions. What type of mantis is that? Also about how many gallons would you estimate your tank to be? And lastly, what type/brand of light do you have?
Ike is a g. smithii. My one tank was 8" cube and about 2 gallons, then I built a 12" cube which equaled about 7.5gallons - but there was additional water in the system due to the cannister filter.
The light is a 70w de metal halide with an electronic ballast and a 20k bulb. I retrofitted it into a drafting desk lamp that I found at Staples. The lamp was originally a 150w de halogen light.
i was reading on a forum couple a days ago about your 2g office tank and now here it is again haha! nice setup do you have a video of how you modify your eheim so that is act as a sump
Actually I named "Ike" after one of my Grandpa's two German Shepards (haha, which in turn was named after Eisenhower... the other dog's name was "Mac")
Thanks! I didn't use screens or anything. I started with the bulb about 10" above the tank and then moved it closer after about a week. 70w halide seems like it is a lot of light for a 2 gallon tank, but I believe that it is not so much watts per gallon as it is 'how much light does a coral need?'
Thanks, I took a desklamp from Staples and took the guts out of it and replaced them with a 70 watt double ended Metal Halide. The bulb is a 20k bulb.
The cost is the tricky part. I lucked out and got the cannister filter for free from a buddy and the dosing pump (that you see at the start of the film) for only $200 off ebay. Those dosing pumps sell as much as $1000 US. The tank "only" cost me $500 or so to set up : ) !!!
But it could have cost many times that if I paid ful retail on everything.
They come in all different sizes. For the 4" g. smithii that I have in the video, your tank would be a paradise. For a peacock mantis though, I think your tank would be too small. They get from 6"-8" and a 20gallon tank is the recommended minimum size. Best of luck,
Yes, the tank was dedicated to the mantis shrimp. I think that is the best way to keep these animals. If you do mix them with other fish and inverts, just make sure that they are expendable...
The sound of it hitting the shell is amazing. In other videos it sounds like a tapping. This is more like smashing a cardboard box with a hammer. Awesome.
Hi, what is the specie we see at 01:38 ?
And how much did it cost to build the light ?

What's that thing called that opens and closes at 1:30? Can you tell me where you got the coral/rock from also?
Kenshin0099 3 years ago
That is a soft coral called pulsing xenia. Grows like a weed for most people.
I bought my corals from my local fish store.

Mantis shrimp are pretty tricky to handle. Those front legs that they have can give you some nasty cuts if you try to grab them.
