This is sometimes called a brush rehearsal, a step up from blocking, and down from dress. Lighting plan is tested, performer makes his marks (where he's meant to be on stage so that lighting and sound work effectively), and accompaniment (pianist, band, orchestra, tape, etc.) is run for balance as well as how it can be heard by the soloist, and vice versa. Often, as in this case w/ Miss Judy, the performer opts to "save their voice" for the show, so they merely go through their paces.
Much better video of this exists firstly. Secondly JUDY didn't like the song, plain and simple. I think that it was Mark Herron's idea that she sing the song. I think that this footage is very special in that it is JUDY rehearsing and than when you see the air tape, she is truly marvelous with the Bacharach composition!!!
@damone77 i think her and mark were over by this time, it was 1966, i think the producers wanted her to do this song, and they were going to re shot it at another time when they felt her voice would be stronger, but for reasons it never happened
Wow! Along with all her other talents, she was a ventriloquist! (Cuckoo!) Not since Lucy and the clock-under-her-coat (cuckoo) have we seen such (cuckoo) talent!
Actually, she wasnt in bad voice. She just hadnt learned the words yet and was just running through the song for staging. This was just a runthrough with no makeup on!It was never meant to be seen. On the broadcast version, she looked beautiful, sounded great and didnt miss a word.
I love the mad psychadelic quality of this clip. Judy is just pacing the songs to get a feel for what's what and wheres where for the show. and you can feel her NOT delivering, not giving that precious energy that she gave when she was 'on'. facinating and extraodinary. like her.
This awesome & incredible!...It almost seems also like one of her first forays into the 'new composers' or newer material...Very Exciting! Kind of like...If she had lived, we might have been treated to her renditions of songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or Nilsson's "Wihout You" by 1972 or so...Did she ever actually record this song? Or is it available in any concert recordings? Or only here? *Judy Forever* :)
Dennis, thanks a million for posting this wonderful footage, heavily laidened with the "this is not what you are supposed to see" factor but nonetheless an important piece that simply must be seen. A study in the evolving performance of a song, taught expertly by noneother than the great Garland herself.
I can't stop watching this... It's awesome to see such a personal moment, see her just singing without a crowd. Yet even without a true audience she still puts herself into the song and is such a natural performer--check that flourish at the end! :-) Love it.
Love the way she "la-la-las" the words she forgot bcs it's just a rehearsal. How great(& rare) is this clip- she's so relaxed.(Love the parrot in the background!)

You love the way she la-la's through the song with the words forgotten from so much booze & pills? sad is what it was.She WAS great, but that was long gone.
I love that bit too. Yes, it was a sad life- but she has to be admired for carrying on to her last days (short though they were).Troubled but great to the end... & yes,the parrot backing-singer is fantastic!
Does anyone know if a youtube user with a name similar to 'johnmanah' had his account suspended in the last days? He uploaded around 100 Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli videos, some of them quite rare. Does he have a new account under a new name? Any help would be appreciated; maybe some of you know his email. He was a 14 year old guy with great taste for great performers. THANKS!
she actually slept at the studio the night before this rehearsal and came straight from her dressing room having just woken up. i think thisexplains her appearance. she's adorable anyway and looks just like baby gumm again somehow.
Stiletto is doing a disservice to their own business interests and to the legacy of a grand legend. The more people experience the enormous talent of Judy Garland, the more DVDs they will ultimately sell. When will the entertainment industry wake up?
Did they drag Judy in kicking and screaming? Come on now...why hand her a song with which she was obviously uncomfortable when she had a portfolio of songs that drove audiences wild?
Because the song was very popular at the time. She actually got all the words correct in the broadcast version and sang this song in concert for awhile after- Dennis
I think "What the World Needs Now" was a good choice as opposed to the usual basking in nostalgia. I think Judy could have done justice to many more contemporary songs and updated her image, as Sinatra and Elvis did.
This is GREAT!!!(even if the quality is less than perfect) I've never seen this footage. Is this the only rehearsal film from this show? Please share more!
Never mind, the quality, of the video; Judy was NEVER a singer. Just a showman. The same applies to Liza (UGH!!!!).

she looks so tiny here but with the orange costume she looks fuller, maybe she felt more power in costumes

The Squeaky bird in the background is trying to help her out with the words - JUDY did this song on the actual show in better voice and looked well.
