It's legal in Canada. Assisted is ok, as long as the pressure to start the assisting isn't on the handle. However, a knife with a very loose hinge that one could "fling" open would be illegal.
Canadian Criminal Code Bans:
Sec. (84)(1)(b) "any knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force, or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device attached to the handle of the knife".
@littlegoobie That was a border comitee ruling and not from a criminal court.
The border gards will seize pretty much any knife they can flick open with a swing of a wrist even though the exact same model is sold in many stores across canada. You can get the spec elite knife at lebaron in canada and at many other stores too online. Just don,t buy them in the US because they will be seized at the border by some cocksuker border dude on a power trip.
I live in Ottawa Ontario and I bought one here. It isn't assisted. I can open mine just like in this video after working it in over a few weeks.
It's a great knife and I recommend it.
It's my EDC (Every Day Carry)
Just be careful. The clip that rides on the outside of your pants pocket isn't flush so it can get caught, become lose and fall out of your pocket. I lost my first one that way.
Don't know if you tested this, but how does the arc lock perform when dirt or sand ends up in the mechanism? Does it lock up or is it still smooth to open?
is this one a winner? i don't have an SOG in my collection and the action looks incredible on this knife, is it an assisted opener or just extremely smooth?
I EDC this for quite some time and is still in my rotation. It's NOT an assisted opener. The action on the SOG arc locks are really that smooth. I started with assisted openers and I guess the last several years have really preferred the SOG arc-locks and Benchmade AXIS-locks. cont>>>
They're very similar locks and behave the same. I'd start with Benchmade first, they are a little more expensive but I use mine a lot and are very smooth/solid and good size. The SOG elite is priced well and now uses VG-10 steel which I like.
I don't own the Leek but what I understand their blade tip is prone to breaking under hard use. I like both versions of my SOG Twitch's only issue thus far has been a missing clip screw which was replaced for free. Whatever you can pick up cheaper they seem to be very similar I just prefer SOG.
I'm not sure I understand. But one refers to what happens when the blade opens (LOCK). The other sounds like how you may open the blade (FLICK). Clarify and I'll try further
Gerber's knives are fairly low cost items these days. Some Bucks are better than others.
Most SOGs are good. Kershaw make good knives too... but many have the speed safe mechanism which isn't too robust. Kershaw's customer service is probably the best in the business, and they'll replace a speedsafe spring with no quibble, but it's still a nuisance to do it.
Those are all good. Cold steel is good too. Kershaw is great. Case, old timer, fallkniven, busse, ontario, tops. Some do crap and quality too so look up the knife on the internets.
I like the feel of the X-Ray Vision's handle better. But in general I'm using my plain blade knives more often. The X-ray is just a tad shorter and feels perfect in my hand and for carry.
is it an assisted opening knife?

There are no other knife banning laws in Canada.

oooh i'm a sucker for VG-10...and giant blades on folding knives, i might have to pick up the 5-inch model.
thanks for the info!
imairlax 3 years ago
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that the 5 inch Spec-Elite uses AUS8 steel.
TheMantastic 3 years ago
I did a bit of research and apparently they used to be manufactured with AUS8 but they switched to VG10, so check what you're buying.

this is one of my favorite knives with a 4 inch razor sharp blade there isn't too much this knife cannot do. Great choice for self defense as well.
