Thank you for this piece. The Worker houses are still signs of hope, but they do not seem to have the vitality as a movement that they had when Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin were around. Partly, I think that this is because of the intensely loyal character of the original movement towards the Church. They mistrusted too much ecumenism because they wanted to Catholic. Dorothy would never have supported 'gay rights', or even birth control.Their ideal was rooted in medieval European society, really.
Was not talking about God's presence. If you read romans 12:1 Our spiritual act of worship is to present out bodies as living sacrafices this is our spiritual act of worship. Faith with out works is dead.
This was just beautiful! When I joined the church in the 70s, it was all about action and compassion and aligning your life and politics to uplift the poor. I wish it had not changed so much. We need more Dorothy Days!
Hi Mellow - I have been reading your posts and am so happy to meet a fellow traveller on the path. After all the posts from Catholics that split hairs on dogma and right-wing politics as a litmus test for faith, it is so refreshing to find a thread that attracts those alive in the spirit. May you be blessed for your sincere living love.
@hollywoodartchick Yeah, those Catholics want us to believe we have to take the Sermon on the Mount literally, that we have to love our enemies, and that killing our unborn children is homicide. We should be able to believe whatever we want: if we hate colored people, that's our right. If we want to practice infanticide like the Protestant apostates, our choice. Out with Jesus and back to Moses! i'm with you, buddy, even if your logice is a little fuzzy.
Sorry dude, but you need to freshen up on your study of Catholicism. The pope (from Latin: "papa" or "father" from Greek πάππας, pappas)[1] is the Bishop of Rome and as such, is leader of the worldwide Catholic Church (that is, both the Latin Rite and the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with the Roman Pontiff).

That was neat! A pretty good intro, based on my ten years at the Tacoma, Washington Catholic Worker. Weird to see it talked about in such a glamourous format! Fun.

The pope is only recognize by the Church of Rome. The eastern church does not accept the pope as head of the church.

Someday we will realize that worship is not a activity in a building but rather what you do for God.
mellowtribe 2 years ago
Mellowtribe,
I would say that the true presence of God as Eucharist is much more than an 'activity in a building'.
