  • The musical equivalent to random oral utterances known as "speaking in tongues" in some christian sects in the U.S.? Strong resemblance.

  • that massively sharp not at 3:12 .ouch. he's human! now when i sing every 5th note flat on the bridge i don't feel so bad. they call us lounge lizards "artists" in germany. wrong. BTW there is a equally good and longer quintet version with an unbelievable "percussion" scat on "take 5" on a live in berlin cd. and the best version of "better than anything". with airto on drums and abe laboreal on bass.

  • 86 people have never been to a live show and definitely do not know what entertainment is!!!

  • @danjese I dream of going to one of his live shows.

  • Strikingly badass energy contradictions around 5:20.

  • Al Jarreau - Take Five (1976): I remember you singing your music compositions on the radio. In the late 60's my father was a truck driver hauling cattle, and I traveled with him and when we'd arrive at a truck stop to rest and refuel the truck, I would change the station from country to find blues, jazz, etc., playing. As a teen I would go excitedly spastic if your song(s) played. I loved your vocals then, love your vocals now approaching 2012. Thanks for so much pleasure Al. Trinkett XOXOXOXO

  • @XThis52x i was 16 1976. chicago.my older brother Pierre.Virgo. made me sit still and listen to all jarreau. like my dad ordered me to listen to old school jazz.i was pissed. by the time i hit 30 i was addicted .al jarreaus artistry his style of vocals .i cant find the words.. yes i can .One word; " poetry " im out.

Im DEFINITELY A Fan Now. lol / Never liked this man before and im a big jazz head, this is just the first time i heard him use his voice as a instrument like so many people speak of. I Take My Hat Off To You Mr Jarreau

  • This is the greatest Jazz singer that ever lived an I pray God gives him another 50 years at least! So my grand children can continue to hear good music.

  • @adondebass exactly

  • @adondebass no, 84 people only listen to justin bieber.

  • @adondebass

    excellent!!!!

  • I just discovered this guy, he is amazing!!

  • Jazz the educated music :)

  • funny my dad the republican austrian catholic lederhosen wearing accordian polka playing dentist used to work in the milwaukee breweries when he was in school. too bad he didnt meet up with al and learn a litle jazz . those polkas mada mee crazee.

  • beautiful talent

  • Comparing jazz and rap for example is comparing apples and oranges... both are a fruit, but yet there are people who don't like oranges and apples, but neither of those is a superior fruit... So the whole discussion is kinda pointless, because a musician has to see sense in both in order to call him/herself a musician... Taste is something to be considered a thing of a personal nature not "musical knowledge" or "musical superiority"

  • @AinoBful No. Rap is Crap. Deal with it.

  • @tjsaxman9 Opinions.

  • @tjsaxman9 The market respectfully disagrees. Deal with that :)

  • @ph1484 Well the market is wrong.

  • @tjsaxman9 LOL!

  • @ph1484 I'm not saying rap is either bad or good, but the market don't mean shit. The more people that like something, the more likely it is average, mediocre or "meh". When very few people like it, it either means it is terrible, or it means that it's a work of genius only appreciated by the few who can understand it. Popular doesn't mean good, in any way shape or form.

  • I've always liked "Take Five" because of the complicated 5/4 time signature. The Dave Brubeck Quartet original is an amazing piece of music that carries the listening on a flight of fancy. Al Jarreau's interpretation of the piece as a melodic theme for courtship and falling in love is magic. Love It!

  • Great scat version!!

  • Just love, love LOVE, love this! Fantastic.

  • Pure art, creativity and music. Al showed a side of himself that is rarely seen. I love it.

  • The last couple minutes of this video gave me life.... Lol I love this guy.

  • Actually Rap is not a form of art, nor is good music. In fact it's horrible poetry, despite the best efforts of some to make it seem more than it kis. Similar to back when Dylan (Bob), Lennon, Robert Hunter and other rockers (most recently Jewel of all people) were trying to be elevated to some kind of fine poets by the intelligensia class. Also happened with graffiti, with a 70s attempt to make it into some kind of "art" (still happening in certain museums).

  • wow...great..wish i can sing like that...

  • excellent...

  • Taildragger53, you sound just like a tail dragger .

  • 80 more stupids

  • Nah really, this is one of those gems you often just find out about unintentionally then you realise this performance was out there all this time and you had no idea....

  • If this man is not a God's gift, i don't know what it is.

  • What a simply AMAZING talent!!

  • Samba seems, the only defect of this divine man is a human being and need to eat boring singing hits

  • The very zenith of vocal acrobatics. Mr. Jarreau, you spoiled us, man.

  • @SanfordCreative You ain't lying....the original Human Beat Box!

  • I like it one hundred times !

  • @nahuikostik You ain't lying....the original Human Beat Box!

  • one of the best male vocalists ...... ever

  • likelikeliikelikeee oooo grrreat! I learned playing Take Five because of this version :D

  • great song all time

  • Everything about him is music... Gorgeous!!!

  • genious

  • Al Jarreaus marvellous scatting was the prototype and inspiration for the 10 years younger Bobby McFerrin who continued with this experimental and innovative art of music.

The rap is a similar breed. But not so much my taste.

the rap lyrics is very often just aggressive trash talk.

  • @Littlewhitelephant not all rap is trash!! in real hip hop that i listen (and a handful others) most of the text is conscious or funny

  • @Littlewhitelephant often yes. way too often. most of it in fact. but as in all pop "music" there are hidden gems to be found. "paris" is a rapper wothy of the label"street poet" and philosopher. race, politics, war, life....check it.

  • @Littlewhitelephant check out freestyle fellowship. i think you might like it

  • @Littlewhitelephant and rap has no melody

  • @Littlewhitelephant The trash talk has mostly been in the mainstream side of hip-hop music. In the underground it is much more about having the most creative and often abstract lyrics.

  • @geiri221 Jamiroquai with some of his songs is coming close to Al Jarreaus scatting but my sympathy remains with Al Jarreau.

  • @Littlewhitelephant Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! You *didn't*! You didn't just compare Jamiroquai - a mediocre singer - with one of the innovators? Jamiroquai (I actually like him) has a timbre like Stevie Wonder, but he never really developed any "chops". Kind of bummed me out 'cause I really like his music (when it's not too disco) .. but I always wanted to hear a singer who could really cut loose. And J. never really got there.

  • @Littlewhitelephant

depends on which artist you are talking about. but rap music comes from a different place in the heart and mind than jazz does. the rap music that is pushed on the masses is most likely the trash you hear. check Tribe Called Quest and The Roots for a nice blend of jazz and hip hop then continue your journey from there with related videos.

you will thank me for it.

  • @Littlewhitelephant rap is not always about the lyrical content, but about the rhymes and about the rhythm/flow. most people dont understand that (good) rap does not profile itself through an intelligent contet but about playing with words. hope you understood what i wantd to tell you. :)

  • This is music!

  • can anyone find the original "A RHYME THIS TIME" of AL JARREAU??? PLEASE THIS IS A SOUND PEOPLE SHOULD HEAR... WE ARE ROBBED OF SOME BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS..

  • Yeah Al! Love it :)

  • Al Jarreau deserves to be mentioned in the same language as Frank Sinatra, Bille Holiday, Tony Bennett, Ella Fritzgerald, etc. Nobody can touch him when it comes to scat singing.

  • The beginning is too sick!!

  • @heckto35 yeah, i thought nowadays people are the craziest ever, but obviously limitless imagination does not belong to any era.

  • @JakubKarolD Too true man, but sadly crazyness is done by little talent now.

  • THE DRUMS

    THE DRUMS

    THE DRUMS WOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTT

  • this is truley an amazing track, al is probably the best scat vocalist that has ever lived, a pure legend, you all need to check out a tracl by al called "easy", total clasd

  • LOOOOOVE IT. thas probly my favorite version of take 5. wow. amazing

  • @zmyboo there s a very similar (with obviously better sound quality) CD version recorded earlier live in Berlin. with Airto and Abe Laboreal, and a longer "percussion scat" by Al . Listened to it hundreds of times. Still gives me the chills.

  • Dopest shit ever!

  • SWAG.

  • Brain = *explode*

  • untouchable

  • Amazing...

  • Hill Auditorium 1978 He blew my mind...good times.

  • talant

  • Brilliant.

    Just brilliant.

  • LE + GRAND !!!

  • This is mindblowing, I'm shivering.

  • dont be such a critic, there are plenty of rappers who use quality jazz/neo-soul samples and rhyme meaningful lyrics about real issues over them

  • He has big hands

  • this nigga on crack?

  • @TheSupaSwagS Criativity!

  • Went from Dimmu Borgir to this. Music is music, baby.

  • more like beatboxing not rap.

  • Not saying i condone everything about rap, however, a lot of people blames rap for the woes of today, but has anyone ever taken the time to scrutinize movies, they are everywhere also, people see, people do. I'd like to see the results of taking a kid and playing a song talking about killing and show another kid movie about killing, see which one acts it out first, be it through games such as cop and robbers.

  • @snugb The WHOLE media world of today involves both film & music.

    It's a reflection upon society.

Now, i'm not saying this is GOOD or BAD. Each one decides this.

But the problem comes when you call what is a pure gimmick, ART, just for the sake of it.

The passage of time will decide whether it IS art or just hype.

  • @taildragger53

And that is my point, movies still haven't evolved too.. there is alway the protagonist and the antagonist. and most of the time the protagonist always wins. It a simple case of " oh! Tom Cuise just blew somebody's head off, awww he's so cute and he's a star so it's okay." "50 cent is talking killing Gettho! EVIL! EVIL! EVIL!

I have a 2 year old son and he does what he sees / not what we say when he can't see us.

Art is subjective and not objective.

    Peace

  • @snugb admiedly i have no idea what the conversation is... however movies HAVE evolved... just not the "Hollywood" movie

Movies have evolved leeps and bounds in the past 10 to 20 years, let alone the past 100 years. 100 years ago movies were still considered an art, they had people looking at ways to make movement grander, more awe capturing, more impacting. When sound came into it it did take a huge leap backwards.

  • @snugb but i digress, i don't have enough time to argue the whole point. really, just look at the indie film community, they can explain things better.

  • Not saying i condone everything about rap, however, a lot of people blames rap for the woes of today, but has anyone ever taken the time to scrutinize movies, they are everywhere also, people see, people do. I'd like to see the results of taking a kid and playing a song talking about killing and show another kid movie about killing, see which one acts it out first.

  • I have been listening to Mr. Al Jarreau for more that 30 years and I have yet to meet his equal. Although Rachelle Ferelle does follow a very close, dare I say, no I can't bring myself to doing so. She is the female equal to my dear friend.

  • wow! he is a duplicate of rachelle ferelle! listen to her concerts!

  • whomever doesn't like this video hasn't watched it from start to finish. simple as that.

  • Awesome! Pure genius! Not what I expected, but still great music!

  • ааааааааааааааааааааааааа

  • i call this SOUL CHANTING.... he's really INCREDIBLE !!!!!

  • PAN JAPA

  • fucking amazing!

  • In that moment he was "The Music", no more to say for me. Thank you Al.

  • The artist Kem......is cold with the instrument sounding voice too......Gerald McBride....a d j in Detroit have artist competing against each other....had AL and Kem. going at it.....all man ....what ....I couldn't believe it myself.....back to back songs with both artist doing their thing.....what .....Kem actually won ....in Detroit.....that shows you how talented this guy is...it was great to hear two artist with similar (different) talents go at it........

  • Hi everyone, does anyone know where I can see anymore of this gig??? Is the entire concert posted anywhere??

its mind blowing stuff what a band..... on fire :)

  • გვიყვარხარ ძალიან

  • It is so cool how the band kicks in. Amazing vocals

  • i don't know wht to say this is awesome.it make me ask what is being an artist ? and again this is it. the moment one start searching for a song like this, its ither you are insane with music or an artist you self. "shake five" to the music lovers.

  • i don't know wht to say this is awesome.it make me ask what is being an artist ? and again this is it. the moment one start searching for a song like this, its ither you are insane with music or an artist you self. "shake five" to the music lovers.

  • how the hell did he do that stuff at the start its just brilliant!

  • Love this!

  • He is most definetly a god of what he does-Dr. A l Jarreau-Phd in psychology and music!! One of the best that ever did it and nobody does it like him-Nobody!!!! You got to bow down to the crown and he definitely is wearing a crown.

  • 2:03 to 2:05 "little bit of jazz, a little bit of WEED, little baby "
