The eye becomes more oval than round, and due to its increased size, it is impossible for the lens to change shape to sufficiently clear focus light from distant objects on the retina. I wish I could hear the Doctor's explanation... but I learned a bit about this in eighth grade, so I can tell you guys this:

In a short sighted person, the eyeball is longer so the light coming in doesn't quite hit the right spot at the back of the eyeball. This makes it so the image isn't in focus. This is corrected with a concave lens which bends the light slightly so it hits the right spot in your eye. :)

well a short sighted eye is longer, makin it impossible for the light reflecting off of things to reach the back and create an image. fixed with a lens to bend the light and make it longer... im shortsighted ^^

yea the cornea is longer, but not cuz it sticks out more. its cuz short-sightedness changes the shape of your eyeball. the eyeball is stretched vertically (i think), hence the cornea gets longer, cuz its stretchy too. people probably think the cornea sticks out cuz of how ppl treat eyes in laser eye surgery (they cut off some of the cornea)...i think thats what it is
