  • Masterpiece!

  • Midnight at the olympia theatre Dublin seems like yesterday. Thanks for many the good night.

  • I'm only 13 and I love his music, I wish I could have seen him live.

  • Used to see John and Beverley around the folk club circuit in the late 60's.

  • wow...

  • Looks like an official DVD of this session will finally be sold--

    codamusic.co.uk/product-detail/58796/Bain+Douglas/Transatlantic+Sessions+2

  • J.M The Boss. Still missing yah every day. xx

  • What a genius. A true artist, one of the few. RIP Bigman.

(Only thing that disappoints me on this version is Paul Brady's soulless piano)

  • @cooltubeish Dude I think Paul did an amazing job. I don't fancy myself as someone with any real Piano knowledge but I think what Paul did was beautiful and complemented the genius that was John Martyn perfectly. The whole songs and drips off the piano with Johns Vocals and the guitar floating with ease through it all. What a beautiful track

  • @lcotter73 We, at least, agree completely on those last four words. Great cover by a true Great.

  • Ogni volta che lo ascolto cado in verticale nelle viscere mie e della terra. Grazie John ovunque tu sia.

  • What an interpretation of this song...I actually like it more that the original Ben Harper version!!! wow

  • listened for 1 minute and 6 seconds...then clicked like. awesome sound.

  • ....truely miss him! ...always an inspiration! had tickets and the bugger checked out !!!!!!!

  • I have read a lot of people say how they believed his early stuff was better than his other stuff and some people even discounting his later stuff, If anyone listenns to "on the cobbles" they will see how wrong they are, its a fantastic album, the first song "baby come home" is typical John and his humour "get your skinny arse back home" classic, also Paul Weller collaborates on "under my wing" Im glad to say after listening to on the cobbles ive bought 10 more albums

  • Only got introduced to this feller last year by fellow scouser Tony Santemera whilst working in Minehead and staying in a caravan in Butlins. Nice on Tony-- How I ever missed this performer I will never know.

    Brilliance.

Something else. This track and Solid Air are fantastic.

Sorry I wont get to see him live.

  • This is real Music, emotion and feeling. Genius of John Martyn

  • i cannot believe i went 12 years with out hearing this. damn

  • Sweet Fuckin' Jesus!....

  • I had the pleasure of playing one of his songs for him in the Rotterdam Bar, Belfast back bar after one of his 3 appearances during the Save The Rotterdam Campaign year. WOW.... there were only about 20 people in that lock in that night!! and he summoned his guitar tech to get his martin for me with "hey.... get my dreadnought... i wanna hear this guy sing"!

  • oh fuck john that was good

  • What an excellent music !!!

  • one of the greatest originals of our time, along with Richard Thompson, Warren Zevon (check out my shit's fucked up, he died soon after) I read a post on Johns fan site that said he provided the soundtrack to this persons life, hard to argue, RIP John

  • I thought I knew how great John Martyn was but this contribution causes me to reconsider. This is simply totally brilliant. Peerless. One of the greatest performances of all time.

  • Never knew he played this song. And with Paul Brady. Pretty impressive.

    RIP John.

    You are missed.

  • I like this because it puts the emphasis on Martyn's vocals, not his guitar playing. I think his vocals were not given the regard they deserved, and this shows what a fab singer he was.

  • where to write to to get ALL of these videos?? BBC??

  • what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune ! think im gonna wear this video out !!!!!!!!

  • what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune !

  • one of the best covers in the history of covers!

  • Totally Amazing!! Thank you!!

  • just wonderful. man for all reasons, aye johnny was eh?!! (-: tyvm...much luv n that.

  • I think this is great it makes me think of Bach Goldberg variations played by Glenn Gould when he was older cf when he first played them ( sorry if I sound a bit up myself but please comment if you know what I,m getting at). Guess what I am saying is that you can hear the soul of the man as he gets older.

  • beautiful

  • Still missing you Big Man.xx

  • is that paul brady playing piano?,have you any more of this please?

  • rip john

castlemilk comunity centre ,92 i think

he was on it , so was i .

best concert i seen him play .

    peace john .

  • can never tire of that

  • i'm a huge ben harper fan, I have all his albums, but I have to say this is incredible, I find this emotionally superior than the original...

  • this recording is perfect as possible... very simple solo but so much feeling in it...

  • i will never forget midnight at the olympia,Dame st Dublin,Seen JOHN manys the time there. chereshed moments.God bless.

  • Makes me want to cry - big southern jessie.

  • I can feel my room buzzin and vibrating when I play this

    John was the Best

  • How the hell did they pull this GENIUS out of the dribble that is the Ben Harper song????

  • @benhall1234 I'm a BIG JM fan and love this track... but the Ben Harper original is fantastic too... more understated, but great groove and not a world away from the cover IMO.

  • @VenLon hmm, musically no itsnot all that different..It's just the 'singing' I dont get.

  • @benhall1234 you're obviously not a musician.

  • @mycal64 Actually I am...Ben Harper is just a bit naf..

  • These guys are real pros, they keep playing but I think I'd crumple into a little heap every single time JM did that roar from his soul.

  • unglaublich gut !

Dieser Mister wird da oben auch geliebt werden !

  • He feels the Music so great!

  • johm martyn is fantastic, one love one world

  • Amazing track. Simply amazing.

  • Good man, keep the spirit alive!

  • Rarely are people so lucky to witness a genius in any field. Here is one musical genius. We're privileged. Thx John.

  • John just commands the band here.. unbelievable

  • Better not be.

  • Will this be Cheryl Cole's next single?

  • no she is releasing bohemian rapsody with 50 cent backup lol

  • john i miss you sooooooooooooooo much

  • every time i hear it, it blows me right away... THE version

  • If this doesn't move you, then you are broken, go get yourself seen to.

  • Good lord, I'm astonished how he's taken this song, completely transformed it and made it a classic!

Such a tragedy he has gone. 60 is no age at all.

  • thank you JOHN!!! u were brilliant and will always be rememberd

  • i like to think that John hasn't gone,

    he's just left the bar.

  • The lucky ones got to share a drink with him, the rest have to make do with his music. It aint a bad deal.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you kindly! Have you watched the Trans 2 He Got All The Whisky clip? It fills me with utter joy!! :-) Amazing how he makes these songs so much his own. Unique performances ,I feel.

  • This is utterly sublime, his voice was at a peak. Unbelievable. Stunning in every respect. I have this on Repeat!! Thank you so much for posting.....

  • The voice of a generation, even if most of that generation was too distracted by the pretenders to know it.

  • Oh man, beautiful, just beautful - he may not have written this one but he sure owns it..

Aw jeez, John. Thank you for making my life better than it was ever going to be. Love you, mate.

    robert

  • So Long John - Live On In Song .

  • A legend. A very sad day. Resr in peace.

  • omg one of my favourite ever songs by one of my favourite artists ever. I never even knew he had done this!!! His voice makes my heart bleed! Does anyone know if the Transatlantic sessions are available in video/audio anything?

  • Have seen Series 1 and 2 available on E Bay on DVD from some guy in Holand, but they are copies and he was looking for 40 Euros for each DVD. Thet have never been officially released by BBC

  • @Mell1888 - TS1 DVD officially released (though not by the Beeb) in Nov 2008.

  • TS series 3 video complete - WHIRLIEDVD01 (0 JM items)

TS series 1 video complete - WHIRLIEDVD02 (4 JM items)

This is one of the 3 JM items from TS series 2, of which there is still no official DVD.

There have been various CD releases of series 2 audio highlights over the years, but not sure what's still in print.

    HTH

  • Cheers for that. Managed to source season 1. Also I remember a series that dates before TS that had John Martyn, Eddie Reader, Pat Kane, possibly Emmylou Harris that was done in the Renfrew Ferry. I still stayed at home then so must be at least 11 years ago anyway. Any ideas?

  • check out paul taggart excuse me mr, does a nice version

  • @pappawookee did someone else do it too ?

  • @panzermort the first version I heard of this, and I assume he wrote it but I may be wrong, is by Ben Harper from a few years back. If his was a cover then I'm sure someone else on here will correct me.....

  • @pappawookee yes your right I did a bit of research, personally I feel Johns version knocks socks of Bens but its only an opinoin etc

  • My hero. Rest in Peace John. Your music will be with me for ever. x

  • Godspeed John

  • Great singer and musician, great band.

    And so the liryc.

  • What a voice!

  • the man has heart

  • Transatlantic Session - great camera work, fantastic sound, brilliant musicians - what more can you say!

  • Pleaseeeeee....can you tell me what's the name of the song at beginning of this video(the song that john martyn sing from 0:00 to 0:15)?

    sorry for my bad english

  • Poster here - thought it was just the same song in rehearsal mode. Doubtless if anyone thinks differently they'll shout out.

Wish my Italian were as good as your English. Thanks for comenting.

  • Darn - That mnemonyzz guy may remember archaic subjunctives, but he sure can't spell. Apologies.

  • Marvellous talent.....heart rending performance

  • Saw him last night and hes still brilliant! Such a great rendition.

  • Wow! Great rendition of this Harper's song !! Five Stars.

  • excellent

  • Thankyou for this. Just outstanding all round performance. Someone on BBC Scotland deserved a Lairdship for dreaming up the Transatlantic Sessions.

  • Damn that was good. Gotta love Johnny Too Bad.

  • HE'S A SOUL FEEDER. i'M 4 EVA HUNGRY FOR THIS MANZ FOOD.

  • lol!!!me too Kassy!!1

  • damn, that is the sexiest soul I've ever felt.

  • Is this the paul brady who is famous for irish traditional music?

  • 'Tis indeed.

  • Yep,he's all grown up. Check out" the one I love" wicked guitar playin, brings a big ol sweat on for me,Luv the resounding E chord

  • This isn't my type of music at all, but this song is really amazing.

  • Amazing!!!! I think Chef off soithpark should duet with him!!

  • john i know u wont see this, but i fukin love you xxxxxx

  • I heard martyn years ago, and his music and voice hit me man, big time. Then i heard harper and got the same thing. So to hear martyn do a harper song is amazing. Two true giants of music. When they play or sing its my soul not my ears that hear. Goosebumps man.

  • im a huge harper fan but this guy done a damn good job in my opinion..

  • and the more you hear of him the more you'll be impredded

    pure musical genius

  • hehe candy to the ear.

  • i love this song

  • Praise the Lord to hear this man of music burn our hearts with a beautiful Ben Harper tune...I hope you are well John...I miss the love and pain and soul in your work...Billy The Mountain

  • im a long time ben harper fan but i gotta say hearing the opening riff on piano just has a better sound to bens still think bens amazing but prefer this version

  • god bless johnno, hes in a right state at the moment, after his leg amputation a couple of years ago, hes apparently pretty much unable to move and has gone up like a balloon, god bless, wicked sense of humour and can drink like a fish

  • I prefer the original by Ben Harper. but this one is good as well!

  • From which DVD does it come from ? Have a lot of JM's records, bur never saw this one before.

  • Not currently available that easily - but there are rumours of TS1&2 DVDs in a couple of months.

  • Ben Harper didn`t do a cover of this song cause it`s actually his song! :)

  • ben harper did a cover of this, sounds a bit different but mostly the same lyrics. Tis a good tune.

  • This is a better version than the studio version he recorded.

  • fretkillr is a serious rival IMO but JM seriously rocks

  • One of the most important singer-songwriters in my life. His total work is mid-boggling...from the fresh faced boy on London Coversations to the lovable old man. I love all of the permutations. There will never be another so pay attention.

  • Loveable old man?

He's 58/9! just a lifetime of abuse taking its toll.

    God bless, JM.

  • when John was on form he was unbeatable.

Just about the most emotive singer i've ever heard.

One of my favourite tracks...may your god go with you bro'

  • This is as cool as it gets!

  • musical genius. maximum respect.

  • how to use your voice as an instrument[by the master]

  • The man is a giant in every repect. Sublime.
