2nd to get that far into fair territory to call a play at first base would be next to impossible... unless you are calling the play on the run, (which you never do)
i think that this really is "do the opposite of what i tell you" nothing here is correct at all, i wanna meet the guys who trained this man because they fucked up big time
This guy needs umpire training himself and should not be taken seriously in umpire videos. As a High School and College umpire and a Wendelstedt graduate, i can tell you that this man knows absolutely NOTHING about professionalism. He is a slob. He has no love for the game because if he did he would learn the correct way of umpiring rather than presume to know and teach others his fallacies. This guy is no more an umpire than i am the man in the moon. He makes all of us REAL umpires look bad.
The East Coast doesn't know baseball. This guy is a clown. 1) hat 2) mask color 3) slot position 4) head movement on the pitch 5) timing 6) strike call after coming up, ball call while in pitch position 7) movement down the 1st base line creating a desired 90˚ angle 8) creating a similar angle at all calls at each base. How we do in 303
kneecapfat.....I've seen your posts on this clowns videos, and I agree w/ everything you've said, except for the "shot" you took at the East Coast. Granted, this guy is a clown from NY, but he is by no means a true indicator of the intelligent baseball minds on the East Coast. I'm from South Jersey and take exception to that comment. Other than that, you're right on w/ everything else.
please don't lump the whole east coast with this clown.. plenty of the east coast knows it's baseball.. this guy makes a mockery of the game not only of himself..
Man, i don't know about the rest of you but I have NEVER base umped from the infield....I have always set up on the grass edge behind 1st, 2nd, or SS depending on where the runners are and then I run in on the play. Have I been doing this wrong???
Yeah. With nobody on, you are behind the bag at first on the line. Runner at 1st or third only or 1st and third, you would be on the first base side of the mound, on the edge of the grass in a line extending from the plate off the edge of the mound. Runner at second or second and third or bases loaded, you would be on the third base side of the mound in line with the plate off the edge of the mound.
Wow, completely incorrect positioning. I would never run across the mound either. Appearance does matter too. People won't take you serious. Just because they're kids, doesn't mean a somewhat professional appearance isn't important. I've watched most of his videos and I was better one my FIRST time out than he is now.
no one calls it HOME PLACE. it is home plate. this guy is as bush league as they come. where did you get your certification? you didn't go to pro umpire school with your wacky mechanics.
you are exactly right Feaster0. It's called slotting for those of you that aren't familiar with this. I'll try and explain this as best as I can.. the umpire stands with a good base and feat wider than shoulder width apart, and bends to a "locked" position that is the same the entire game. This should be where the umpire's head is in between the catcher and the batter. in the "slot". The umpire's chin should also never be lower than the top of the catcher's head. I hope this helps.
yes, the hat plays a role unless this is a league and he umps there often, i ump at a league where i know every coach and damn near every parent, and although i wouldnt wear my hat backwards, they wouldnt change their oppinion bc of my hat
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i agree with sonic8231, he is a good umpire, probably knows his does and doesnt. but telleson is wrong, you work over the top of the catcher. you dont know your stuff
Good job. It's great to see somebody so enthusiastic about umpiring. Telleson: Does the way you wear your hat matter at the level of baseball this man is working? I can tell he works hard, and loves what he does. I'd much rather have him umpire a game of mine, then you, who are just critical over stupid things. Thank you for the video!
Sonic: Perception is reality. You only get ONE shot at how you're perceived when you walk out onto a ball field.....no matter what level. Yes, he does have a love for the game, and seems to genuinely care about the kids. BUT...wearing his hat backwards, as trivial as you may think it is, means a lot in peoples minds. He will be looked at as a clown, an idiot, a boob, or even more damaging, an UNPROFESSIONAL OFFICIAL...guaranteed. Not taking pride in your appearance tells alot about the official.
Umpires might look at him differently because of the hat, but not fans. Maybe you have something better to do than calling an umpire a clown, idiot or boob. But I'm sure it is easier to be mean to somebody behind your computer screen.
Sonic: Wearing your hat backwards and being unprofessional IS NOTICED by FANS. When a guy is dressed unprofessionally and acts unprofessionally and he makes a bad call, it is noticed much more and he is given more grief than a guy who is dressed in a professional manner.
Lets put it this way, you want to be an umpire, don't wear your hat backwards. As an umpire, I don't allow players or coaches to wear their hat backwards, its not just unproffessional, its against the game. That's not how you wear a hat in a baseball game.
Also, yes, we umpires are pissed off at this guy because he is making all of us look horrible. We take pride in what we do, and thats why we don't like this guy.
Also, you should never get payed for Little League. I never have.
thebigapple3: You're right, and you're wrong. He does have a good attitude, and you can tell that he loves the game, and being around kids. But, he needs a lot of work. I wouldn't say he "knows his stuff". From what telleson has posted, "expertvillage" could definitely learn from him, not the reverse.

On a 60 feet field its personal preference. On a 90 foot field, you probably want to play in on the cut.
MrPearberr 2 years ago
@cataxpayer no the only reason he did it this way is he be the only umpire to do it.
now say you got a pu and base ump. pu would take third-home you take first second

Umpires DO NOT wear their caps backwards, EVER.

Actually when umpiring behind the plate you are supposs to get in the slot of the catcher and the batter.

You are wrong. At professional umpire school, umpires are taught to work on the inside of the catcher.

Good umpires:
A: Don't wear their hats backward
B: Don't work over the top of the catcher
C: Don't ever listen to anything this fellow says
D: All of the above
