  • I am always amazed at how you guys make rudiments sound so great.

Question: how would I establish a half time backbeat using this specific groove AND tempo.

As of recently I am very inspired by the grooves of Will Kennedy (YellowJackets) but can’t figure out a practical method as the patterns are so darn long and quiet.

    Thanks Thomas!

  • Great stuff, but the audio and video could be better synced.

  • I play thrash. i was jammin with my band and my guitar player made this riff. I played this beat along to it and everyone liked it! haha :D

  • Wow. First time seeing this and i LiKEY!!

  • @greatkid1 Thanks! Using a Shure PG drumset mic kit. Running that into a Presonus Firepod. Which runs into my Macbook Pro, and is hosted on Cubase LE.

  • @geekusadrummer wow man, well the drums sound killer through those mics. The set isn't that expensive either comparatively. Well, I know what I'm getting for drum mics ;)

  • @greatkid1 Thanks! Using a Shure PG drumset mic kit. Running that into a Presonus Firepod. Which runs into my Macbook Pro, and is hosted on Cubase LE.

  • 0.33 in other words a paradiddle

  • this beat is just magnificant!thanks

  • Awesome instruction! =)

  • thanks man, it was really helpful

where I can see more grooves ???

  • was so hard for me...to find the difference between using Swing and No using Swing. But after watch many times...i can play both ways and its awesome.

    Thanks a lot

  • this is great groove to jam

  • FYI...I saw this video and right after it finished I jammed it out on my kit. This video rocks, you rock, and the drums rock! Thanks man

  • Real nice groove!

Great video, good for learning. Also nice to see how it sounds like when you master it and add some licks to it.

    5/5

  • sick groove so trying it

  • Nice groove, thanks for showing it to us. (5stars)

    Keep drumming.

  • Thanks, nice flow. I've always wanted a snare that sounds like that. What kind is it?

  • Thanks! It's a Pacific Maple LX 14x5

  • a question....we you hear these headphones?? i don't know anything for drums but i really like them....5 from me....thanks!!@@@

  • Thanks! PDP All Maple LX

  • it is a good lesson

  • I've always knew the 'paradiddle' but never got into beat using it. With your video, i understood more the good use of paradiddle into beating

  • THANKS from RUSSIA !!!!!

  • thank you for helping me out on my paradiddle struggle to become a good drummer. since it is all i ever wanted to be.

  • Great sound off the kit man

  • nice video :D i like your drum kit :P

  • Comment removed

  • Nice sounding kit!

  • This is a pretty nice groove.

Virgil Donati does an insane Paradiddle Groove also.

    Nice Job dude!

  • THANKS BRO. dude i use this in the song shark sandwich. we play it in our jazz ensemble

  • Dude, sweet! Let me know if you ever get a recording/video of it.

  • i love a good paradiddle groove!!! an awesome sounding way i play it is by placing the bass drum with the accents off the bell, or by just playing the right hand part of the paradiddle with your foot.

  • Great video!

    Thanks

  • great video, youtube is probably the best thing on the internet! years ago you'd have to spend 20 bucks on a video and it was probably crap!

  • google.

  • @sherriffflood True that

  • Nice video......Sounds good...........

  • Thank you for this video. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I love funk, swing, and paradiddles. Thanks for helping me link them up. Your skills are mad and I dig your style bro.

  • man , thanx , this eally works

  • it's amazing to know how many thing we can do with only a simple paradiddle!!

    nice work man, thank ya

  • ok youtube getting a bit better now.

your drumming is cool dude. i play drums too. i like the sound of ur drums. keep drumming.

  • why the fuck youtube loads for so long?

it never happened before but for the past few days youtube loads ages for almost every video.

  • I've been running into the same problem. Irritating.

  • thats a sweet sounding kit, especially the snare but maybe its just how you've got it miced

  • dude youre awesome. i like how you are so proper, yet so chill. haha

  • nice one dude

  • nice man! you did a great job with this video

  • I've been holding my drum sticks wrong this whole time.. for some reason I drilled it into my head to hold the sticks further up, but my double strokes just don't sound right. This shows him playing great double strokes holding the sticks on the lower portion, much help. Thanks!

  • Indeed. Also check out Carter Beuford's video's to see some sweet feel from a really low grip.

  • are your toms 8, 10, and 14?

  • They are indeed.

  • thanks man

  • it's fucking hard to do, most of all if you're trying to swing a paradiddle. it get's really difficult when you're trying some dynamic variations on the kit specially when it gets to the snare part and also the accents on the bell. great job, i some how remembered dave weckl on one of his instructional videos regarding the paradiddle pattern on the kit.

  • lmao

    'it is indeed a paradiddle'

  • @thatdave123 shit was sooo ridiculous

  • @thatdave123 hahahaha

  • Gee, never thought of playing paradiddle grooves in swing feel. Thanks!

  • your videos are very helpful, thanx for uploading.

also, this video has got good sound

    keep on uploading

  • ok ok i got it, i know how to explain, is like u play 1&2&3&4& but u play the & as if was the plet of a triplet (1-tri-plet) so its 8th notes but with the swong feel!!!

  • Yep, you got it, glad I helped :-)

    Good luck to ya

  • ummm i didnt get the swing feel thing... how do i pull my 16th notes away from each other...??????? AWEOSME GROOVE!

  • That's really tricky to explain. Listen to when I play it on the snare while I demonstrate the swing feel. The straight feel sounds more like "ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba" and the swung feel sounds more like "ba--bu-ba--bu-ba--bu-ba" Dunno if that helps, sry its REALLY hard to explain in words :(

  • A swing feel is felt in triplets.

One and uh Two and uh Three and uh Four and uh

If you're playing swung eighth notes, you will be playing:

ONE and UH TWO and UH THREE and UH FOUR

    So swung eighth notes:

ONE and UH TWO and UH THREE and UH FOUR

    And straight eighth notes:

    ONE e AND a TWO e AND a THREE e AND a FOUR e AND a

Where the CAPITAL words are the ones you're playing.

Hope that helped, it IS hard to explain in words. You gotta get that triplet feel.

  • thanx man, that does help!

  • just look up gospel drummers and your will get it pretty quickly

    They use extreme swing.

  • nice, love the ghost notes

  • That was awesome. You have a very musical playing style. Plus your drums sound incredible

  • what type of stand are you using for your ride? please get back on me for this, I need a better stand for my ride

  • The ride in this video is actually attatched to my PDP Super Rack. But right now I am just using a PDP double braced stand. They are (or atleast they were really cheap) at one point selling at $30. They might be around $50 these days if they even exist anymore. Great stands for the price. Fairly light weight, yet durable.

  • Really comprehensive.. I'm an intermediate and this really helped with getting my left foot in time on the hat pedal. Plus it's just a good routine to practice and eventually improvise with if you're beginner-intermediate. Building on each one after the other was great.

    Thanks a lot man!

  • I really like your teaching style. Subscribed.

  • dude, u look like Kurt Cobain a little :)

  • Too bad this guy's actually a musician

  • you're an idiot.

kurt cobain is most likely more of a musician than you

    will ever be.

  • Hey, I'm not saying that I'm a great musician. I'm just saying that he got wayyy more credit than he ever deserved.

  • Snap! :)

  • Funny thing, I was pretty obsessed with Nirvana growing up.

  • haha yea man, i have da 13"' K hats. im like, in love wit dem, lol

  • are those 13" K hats?

  • I wish. They are 14".

  • can u give me a easy song to play but i only have on crash ans a snear hi hat bass my toms and floor tom so plaez help i just started and i can find any thaing to play

  • Check out Audioslave's Show Me How To Live. That's as close to basic as it gets. Good luck!

  • If you only play songs you will not be able to improvise, so I recommend to try to play by yourself and not with a sheet.

  • damn this helps alot, another new thing to show off to peeps after practice :p

  • Damn you!! Stop with the cool vids! too much to practice!! :)

  • what kind of bass skin is that?

  • Evans EV3 I think on the batter.

  • dude freakin sweet whered u learn to play like that

  • Thanks! I learned in school.

  • Jup.. Is that Zildjian Avedis Custom Ping ride ??

I have the same ride.. i must say its AWESOME !!

  • i like your drumset it sounds very good... i like your fills too, easy but clean and not exaggerated, very good. keep up.

  • nicely done

  • I love me a paradiddle. Even more fun is to switch into an inverted paradiddle (rlrrllrl) and then switch to a paradiddlediddle as a six pattern (rlrrllrlrrll) or a paradiddlediddleplicka (rlrrllrlr) and ride that bell like a 10 dollar whore.

    Great vid man.

  • Nice. You have a lot going on there.

  • sic! i want a nice ride, any sigestions?

  • nice!!!

  • damn thats awesome but im a lefty on a right sided kit hahahaha my till this day i have no idea where to put my big ass ride it cant be right like yours im not right handed HELP!!!!

  • you could try it like Carter Beuford's set up and put it above your hi-hat. I wish I could play well enough open handed to put my ride there. That would be sweeeeeet.

  • Check out this video of this kid who drums open handed. He plays ride with his right and left hand. just type in "Steven Crammer dumming"

  • nice Thanks for tips

  • what model of a custom ride is that?

  • Zildjian A Custom Ping Ride 20"

  • nice one mate nice one very good lessons

  • That was a pretty awesome video, and I want to go try that out now.

One thing, try and talk with more feeling. It'll come naturally after enough talking to the camera.

  • What kind of snare are you using? Thanks

  • Pacific All Maple LX

  • What kind of snare are you using? Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • most people dont

  • His isn't even triggered..its mic'd up.

  • Your drumset sounds so good!

  • Wow, just AWESOME!

  • Thanks for posting these fantastic videos! Your kit sounds amazing! I on the other hand am having a lot of trouble with tuning and microphone placement/post production techniques. Do you have any tips for me perhaps? Incidentally, the way you have structured this lesson is at a great pace and very intuitive.

  • Thanks! Both heads on each drum are tuned at a rather medium tension, giving them a more penetrating feel. They are not loose and boxy typical in 'rock drums'. So that might be a good place to start. The mics are 'intermediate' quality. Nothing fancy there. Placed a few inches away, pointed at center of drum. Compress snare and kick in post production to get a phat sound. Google 'Drum EQ' and research some different EQ options for sounds your looking for. Helped me tons. Good luck!

  • Great drumming!

  • Great lesson, man!

  • thats a nice goove man!! an idea for some other lessons... i personally would be extremely interested in a lesson on how to roll fastly incorporating the cymbals and the set in general!!

  • Haha, thanks. Using cymbals in rolls is something I have to take a lesson on myself!

  • Might be a lame question, but how is your cow bell mounted in this video? I just got to now, looks comfy!

Love your vids, and I did use this vid learning this groove a while ago. Great job. ;)

  • skreww youuu. i wish i could do that haha. i can do all of it but anding the hi hat =/

  • 4 way coordination is a pain, but keep practicing man

  • You're a great drummer.

    Aren't you from sputnik/mx?

  • Yeah! Thanks. I used to frequent those boards all the time, though I haven't had time since music started taking off. Plus it seems a little dead these days, which is really too bad. What's your sn? Mine is senseless apprentice.

  • I was The Philosopher. You probably never even saw a post from me. :p

So are you studying perc at a uni or something? You seem pretty dedicated

  • Sweet. I am a Jazz Performance major at the University of Utah. The real deal I reckon! How about you?

  • I want to take a few jazz classes at my uni, but I'm having trouble committing. I love drumming and all, I just don't know what I want to do with my life :p

  • hey good info here. and there are so many ways you can take this and groove based on this pattern! gtrat job on that!

however, i was wondering if you could do some odd-time signature grooves or polyrythm licks

  • If only I knew any! lol. :(

  • good lesson....haha.....i have got it....

  • yeah, I expected the RlrrLrll :D another way to play it:

    Snare=S/Ride=R/Bell/B

RsrrSBss (with accents on the upper-cases of course :)

  • wow it's cool...sir did u learn drum since u were a child?

  • Thanks, I started learning drums when I was 18.

  • wow i thought it was too late for me to start learning drum cos im 16.i thought i was too old.haha...thnx sir.u really encourage me..btw do u play jazz? i'd like to see u playing swing...

  • what drum heads r u using m8 let us no asap especially ur bass its lagit

  • Clear remo ambs on the bottoms of the toms. The mounted toms have Evans EC1's. The floor tom has an EC1. CS on the snare batter. I'm not sure what's on the kick. I think like a double layered head on both sides.

  • I learned to play paradiddles a long time ago, well before you were born, truth be told. After watching your video, I learned some new ways of using them! Thank you and keep up the good work!!!

  • Awesome

  • hey, i was wondering, what snare are you using? cuz it sounds incredible!

  • Thanks! It is the stock snare on a Pacific LX. So it's an all maple snare.

  • Pacific LX. Thanks :)
