Its very nice to see someone that knows what hes doing and explains good as well. Thanks to you man i include this bell pattern in my daily practice. Keep it Up.
I am always amazed at how you guys make rudiments sound so great.
Question: how would I establish a half time backbeat using this specific groove AND tempo.
As of recently I am very inspired by the grooves of Will Kennedy (YellowJackets) but can’t figure out a practical method as the patterns are so darn long and quiet.
Thank you Thomas, a lesson like this broken down especially explaining all the elements separately really helped. Thank you. Love to see more with the same sort of explainations. You are a great teacher. Best regards, Andy

@greatkid1 Thanks! Using a Shure PG drumset mic kit. Running that into a Presonus Firepod. Which runs into my Macbook Pro, and is hosted on Cubase LE.
@geekusadrummer wow man, well the drums sound killer through those mics. The set isn't that expensive either comparatively. Well, I know what I'm getting for drum mics ;)
@greatkid1 Thanks! Using a Shure PG drumset mic kit. Running that into a Presonus Firepod. Which runs into my Macbook Pro, and is hosted on Cubase LE.
was so hard for me...to find the difference between using Swing and No using Swing. But after watch many times...i can play both ways and its awesome.
i love a good paradiddle groove!!! an awesome sounding way i play it is by placing the bass drum with the accents off the bell, or by just playing the right hand part of the paradiddle with your foot.
Thank you for this video. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I love funk, swing, and paradiddles. Thanks for helping me link them up. Your skills are mad and I dig your style bro.
I've been holding my drum sticks wrong this whole time.. for some reason I drilled it into my head to hold the sticks further up, but my double strokes just don't sound right. This shows him playing great double strokes holding the sticks on the lower portion, much help. Thanks!
it's fucking hard to do, most of all if you're trying to swing a paradiddle. it get's really difficult when you're trying some dynamic variations on the kit specially when it gets to the snare part and also the accents on the bell. great job, i some how remembered dave weckl on one of his instructional videos regarding the paradiddle pattern on the kit.
ok ok i got it, i know how to explain, is like u play 1&2&3&4& but u play the & as if was the plet of a triplet (1-tri-plet) so its 8th notes but with the swong feel!!!
That's really tricky to explain. Listen to when I play it on the snare while I demonstrate the swing feel. The straight feel sounds more like "ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba" and the swung feel sounds more like "ba--bu-ba--bu-ba--bu-ba" Dunno if that helps, sry its REALLY hard to explain in words :(
The ride in this video is actually attatched to my PDP Super Rack. But right now I am just using a PDP double braced stand. They are (or atleast they were really cheap) at one point selling at $30. They might be around $50 these days if they even exist anymore. Great stands for the price. Fairly light weight, yet durable.
Really comprehensive.. I'm an intermediate and this really helped with getting my left foot in time on the hat pedal. Plus it's just a good routine to practice and eventually improvise with if you're beginner-intermediate. Building on each one after the other was great.
can u give me a easy song to play but i only have on crash ans a snear hi hat bass my toms and floor tom so plaez help i just started and i can find any thaing to play
I love me a paradiddle. Even more fun is to switch into an inverted paradiddle (rlrrllrl) and then switch to a paradiddlediddle as a six pattern (rlrrllrlrrll) or a paradiddlediddleplicka (rlrrllrlr) and ride that bell like a 10 dollar whore.
damn thats awesome but im a lefty on a right sided kit hahahaha my till this day i have no idea where to put my big ass ride it cant be right like yours im not right handed HELP!!!!
you could try it like Carter Beuford's set up and put it above your hi-hat. I wish I could play well enough open handed to put my ride there. That would be sweeeeeet.
Thanks for posting these fantastic videos! Your kit sounds amazing! I on the other hand am having a lot of trouble with tuning and microphone placement/post production techniques. Do you have any tips for me perhaps? Incidentally, the way you have structured this lesson is at a great pace and very intuitive.
Thanks! Both heads on each drum are tuned at a rather medium tension, giving them a more penetrating feel. They are not loose and boxy typical in 'rock drums'. So that might be a good place to start. The mics are 'intermediate' quality. Nothing fancy there. Placed a few inches away, pointed at center of drum. Compress snare and kick in post production to get a phat sound. Google 'Drum EQ' and research some different EQ options for sounds your looking for. Helped me tons. Good luck!
thats a nice goove man!! an idea for some other lessons... i personally would be extremely interested in a lesson on how to roll fastly incorporating the cymbals and the set in general!!

Clear remo ambs on the bottoms of the toms. The mounted toms have Evans EC1's. The floor tom has an EC1. CS on the snare batter. I'm not sure what's on the kick. I think like a double layered head on both sides.

stainwalk 2 years ago
That's really tricky to explain. Listen to when I play it on the snare while I demonstrate the swing feel. The straight feel sounds more like "ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba" and the swung feel sounds more like "ba--bu-ba--bu-ba--bu-ba" Dunno if that helps, sry its REALLY hard to explain in words :(
geekusadrummer 2 years ago
A swing feel is felt in triplets.
One and uh Two and uh Three and uh Four and uh
If you're playing swung eighth notes, you will be playing:
ONE and UH TWO and UH THREE and UH FOUR
So swung eighth notes:
ONE and UH TWO and UH THREE and UH FOUR
And straight eighth notes:
ONE e AND a TWO e AND a THREE e AND a FOUR e AND a
Where the CAPITAL words are the ones you're playing.
Hope that helped, it IS hard to explain in words. You gotta get that triplet feel.
