If the TIME of day in which we eat doesn't matter ( in terms of weight gain or loss) - why do experts tell us not to eat at least 2 to 3 hours before bed time? Our bodies do have internal clocks, so does metabolism (or the rate at which we are able to metabolize our food play a role in the time of day in which we choose to eat? This is regardless of actually how many calories we consume in total for the day.
think its not about eating at night.. but weight gain is caused by yes eating too many calories throughout the day.. but some ppl go binge eatin at night b4 they sleep... and that screws the metabolism.. eatin and sleepin
I have a cup of cottage cheese and 2 tbsps or natural peanut butter 30-20 minutes before bed EVERY night... and im still getting leaner and more muscular :D
It is important to get your body started in the morning by having breakfast, even though it's not a lot. Your metabolism will rise early instead of later on in the day which means more calories will be spent and you won't eat as much at lunch = same intake, more burning.
well, that's right generally speaking but the body does use energy differently and works differently (hormones, metabolism and such) at different times of the day depending on what it is doing.
for someone who doesn't yet have his diet under check then it really doesn't make any difference, but if one has it, then it can benefit from moving more of those healthy EFAs to the last meal of the day or those carbs to add extra available energy waking up of before training. little tweaks though.
like i said earlier she had fast metabolism. she ate snickers, ice cream, pizza, cheeseburgers during the day and she burned it off(no weight gain) when she started eating right before bed, she started gaining weight. in conclusion, eating CARBS,fats, high cal foods before bed causes weight gain cause you body does not have time to digest it properly, therefore its converted to fat. your metabolism slows when you sleep. not eating 4 hours before bed also cause tremendous weight loss
this is misinformation. eating right before bed will cause more fat storage. your metabolism slows down when u sleep. you should stop eating 2-4 hours before bed. if u have to eat before bed, eat carrots, apples, etc but no carbs or fatty foods. this guy makes me laugh
Glad I make you laugh but you're laughing like an idiot because based on SCIENTIFIC STUDIES it makes no difference. Weight loss is a MOVING AVERAGE over a 24 hour period. You don't eat cake, go to bed & wake up fatter. Any more than you run, go to bed & wake up thinner!
well im lauging based on facts. my sister was skinny with fast metabolism and wanted to put on weight. she was recommended to drink a chocolate shake right before bed and guess what, she gained 5 pounds in a week and a half. your metabolism does not stay the same all day. it slows down when you sleep
Hey steve i was wondering if you woke up and ate at 9 and then waited till 8 0'clock to eat dinner would it mess up your metabolism and put you into starvation mode which would actually make you gain fat?
For VERY heavy or out of shape people the more smaller meals the better. For the average person it really makes no difference. Weight loss is still total calories eaten.
I am a health/fitness/nutrition freak and I'm glad I just found this. I had a question mabye you have answered it in another video, which is recommended? 3 primary meals a day or 6 smaller meals a day?
i don't know about the average person, but as a bodybuilder, I try to eat within an hour of being asleep. The reason is to keep my body in an anabolic state for as long as possible. people trying to lose weight should try and learn about the benefits of gaining muscle, it really helps. muscle mass increases your resting metabolic rate. I burn more calories sitting on my couch watching tv then some people do walking or even jogging because of this.
Hello, i hope u can help me with this since u posted this comment 9months ago. Anyway, I am 24 & 130lbs. I thought that to lose 10lbs I only need to focus on cardio cuz it burns fat. But I NEVER do any weight lifting or anything to increase muscle mass. so are you saying that if I incorporate weight training it will increase my calories burned throughout the day in addition to cardio?
im assuming you are a woman b/c of your weight soo....be more concerned with how you look rather than your weight. muscles add weight. life weights....lots of reps, low weights...your arent trying to be hulk hogan.
Yup, I am a woman. And no, I do not believe Ill ever be or look like hulk hogan...it is impossible for me genetically. I understand that muscle weighs more than fat too. Im shooting for being toned & fit. Thats all=) Thanks for your help.
I agree!!! it doesn't matter as far as a change in weight is concerned. Some people can't eat heavy foods at night due to lying down and having acid relux, thats the only problem I have after eating late at night, especially spicy foods.
But you won't gain anymore weight by eating late at night..
Although the heart IS an active muscle at all times, it only will burn a few calories while the body is at complete rest. By giving yourself 3 hours to allow for digestion, you will have not confused your body to store unnecessary fat content. The water suggestion will keep you hydrated through most of the night while you sleep, and cold water isn't ever a good thing when you're trying to rest, unless you want your body to increase it's temperature to warm the cold water you just gave it. :)
Eating at night shouldn't be a problem, it's eating before you go to sleep and the eating during the intervals of sleep that becomes the issue. Though the body works 24 hours without giving difference to night or day, it pays attention to when the body is and isn't at complete rest. My suggestion is wait 3 hours after a meal before sleeping, and if the pangs get to you drink some warm or at room temperature water to fill you up.
Your body burns 70% of its calories whether you're resting, moving or sleeping. It's called The Metabolism and sleep or the time of days makes no difference.
well ....what i try to do is have nice meal at 6pm chicken breast with some cottage cheese 50-55g protein and than at 9pm i have ON casein protein before bed since it takes UP to 7h to absorb or something like that....u defiantly dont want a big meal before bed or high carbs ....
Sorry sport but I'm right. Your metabolism run 24 hours a day, not just when you're awake. 85% of your DAILY calories are burned by metabolism and digestion.
steve, i got a question about being awake all night instead of being awake during the day. i have read that a change in circadian rhythms(or however you say it) screws up your bodys metabolism..is this true? does it negatively effect your body in any way?
I'm pretty sure if you eat at night, it offsets your body's ability to produce its own growth hormone... because the mechanism that produces it, is also responsible for producing insulin from the foods you eat. So if you eat at night, you're not creating as much of the healthy growth hormone your body needs to regenerate/ repair itself. There is a difference.
This guy is contradicting himself in this video VS another one. Here he says "it doesnt matter if you eat all your food in the morning". But in another video, he says that its better to eat often, eat like 6 meals a day to keep your metabolism up. I think hes overlooking the metabolism factor here... I still think its better not to eat right before bed. Steve, I would love if you could respond to this!
LOL, this simple simon just doesn't get it. You have cravings at night because of high GI carbs you eat during the day, and eating more of that at night inhibits GH release when you sleep. Low blood sugar causes cravings, keep the blood sugar stable and you won't have cravings.
they say eating at nights bad cause most people go to bed a few hours after dinner... and you diggest food less when your sleeping... at least thats what i've been told but your the expert not me.
I always thought that your metabolism slowed down significantly while you slept, forcing your body to store more of the food you consumed as fat than it would if you ate 4 hours before bed, when your metabolism is higher.
Muscles grow in part due to the release of somatotropin, also known as hGH (human growth hormone). This is an EXTREMELY potent hormone that can cause SERIOUS muscle growth! Its your body's own natural steroids! 60% of this is released in the first half of the night when you sleep!
Insulin happens to be very effective at blocking hGH secretion. Eating a bunch of carbs before bed is a good way to negate the beneficial effects of hGH.
hGH doesn't just build muscle, it tears down fat as well. You dont want to block this if you can help it. Avoid all carbs at least 1 hour before bed.
If you want to eat something, eat lots of fats and proteins. The facts slow down digestion, making the proteins break down slower. This supplies your body with aminos needed for repair and growth over night.
There's a host of other reasons why WHEN you eat is almost as important as WHAT you eat, but I wont bother since there's volumes of material on this subject already available, and I'd be typing all night to address each point. But suffice to say, this video wasn't just wrong, it was out right stupid. You really should be ashamed for spouting off such nonsense when you claim to be an expert. If I were you, I'd take this video down and pretend it never existed.
Which is EXACTLY what he said you simpleton, he made note to the fact that if you eat a LARGER ammount of calories, you will gain weit, fucking listen, god you're a douchebag.
Steve, wouldn't an insulin response from high-sugar foods be more suited after a strenuous workout than, say, in the middle of the night? Why would we want "the storage hormone" activated before bed? Would the nutrients not be used more efficiently in this manner?
I think Steve is still in denial that insulin does in fact exist. Sure, I can go along with half of the videos with misinformation (steroids, blah, blah, etc) in them, but this one could actually hamper the weight-loss program of an individual that doesn't know how to effectively diet. I won't even start on the video where he says to eat Snickers bars all day to lose weight! WAY TO GO, STEVE!!! If ignorance was a virtue, you'd be one up on Gandhi.
BUt if you eat foods just before you go to bed your body will take the protein and carbohydrates that you just ate and break them down into fat as they are not ebing used so should be stored for later. I think at least.
Steve, is it true that the body burns more calories while sleeping than it does while typing on a computer? If so, wouldn't it make more sense to not eat after 6 p.m. so that when you are sleeping, your body is burning stored fat and not the food that you just ate?
oh yea definitely same number of calories of course
BUT AT NIGHT TIME WHEN YOU SLEEP YOUR BODY TAKES THAT AMOUNT OF CALORIES AND TURNS IT INTO FAT..WHICH IS REALLY HARD TO BURN OFF LATER
please do not tell me that eating at night does not gain weight...ok maybe celeries but it is so much better to drink 2 cups of water before you go to bed
there are so many studies that show this...i have been looking into this for awhile now
Want fat loss, Cut 500 Cals a day, Spread meals apart during the day (hence 6 smaller meals a day) NOT 3 large ones...and MAKE sure to eat breakfast, its called that for a reason. your body has been fasting for the last 8 hours and needs food....AND NOOOO if you eat at night the food DOES NOT turn into fat!!! Dont Trust me, message me and ill tell you why.
as far as this, even the trainers at my gymn say the food sits in your stomach and since you're less active they immediately convert into fat. Also that food sitting in your stomach while sleeping makes for not such a good nights rest.
But over watching your other videos if i've done 2500 calories burned that day, the 1000 calories i intake in 3 meals during the same day regardless of the last one being before bed doesn't matter?
could it not also be the fact that in the day time u eat and u also burn calories as you are more active where as t nigth you sleep susualy after eating if so... and since the body does nto metabolise stragith away is stores as fat
where does it go then if not stored as fat or burned? what science/experience supports this? I'm even open-minded to your theory's as I've found the so-called experts to be dead wrong years later. Eggs is the perfect example. Years ago; "avoid eggs, raises cholesterol" well, I knew that eggs like natures multi-vitamin, so I didn't heed it. 10 years later they were back-peddling. I believe nutrients work best & synergistically with the material they come with from nature. Beware of mega-isolates
Yes I UNDERSTAND YOU Steve.. Clear as daylight, BASICALLY?? "IF" since the dawn of time we ALL ate a calorie intake of 2500 per day WITH REGULAR weights exercise, the WORLD would be a LEAN/MUSCULAR race..
I agree with you. Losing weight is all about using more calories than you take in. The dieting industry tries to make it seem more complicated so they can sell books and tapes, but it's a very simple concept in reality.
Again, stop reading muscle magazines designed and written by steroid heads and try reading a book or taking a course by a Ph.D. This is exactly why I started this show and why people need help. Extra protein does not build extra muscles. Lifting weights does. Fat only comes off the body because of a calorie deficit not when you eat your caloires. And low carb diets cause weight loss because they are low calories diets.
Not saying our way is the only way, but we dont have to convince anyone because it flat out works for us. And seperation of carbs from fats. highly debated subject. arguments are there as to why it doesnt make sense why you should seperate carbs from fats. BUt again, from case to case, it has shown to aid in dieting down. Suggesting, a calorie is not a calorie.
YOu asked what does protein have to do with anything. Its been shown time and time again that a. high protein builds heavy duty muscle (2 grams per pound enhanced 1.5 natural), and b. low carbs higher protein yet maintains muscle and melts fat. case to case this is true in many people. case to case, people get leaner by avoiding carbs in the late afternoon
why people get leaner case to case by avoiding carbs several hours before bed? Because glycogen is more depleted when waking up, and lypolsis happens easier when doing low intensity emtpy stomache green tea aided cardio upon waking up.
I know your type buddy. the kind that feels the need to lash out on the internet when in dissagreement. It must suck being you. TO have to face the fact that what you believe in so strong and what you've been doing for years MAY NOT BE THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO DO THINGS
The thing is, nobody really cares what you have to say. People who watch these videos come here for this point of veiw, because it is basic, to the point, and well explained. If we wanted your point of view, we would read muscle mags. Better yet, why don't you just make your OWN video series if you disagree so much, and then people that want to listen to you can make that choice!
no carbs 3-4 hours before you go to bed. Feel free to eat all the lean meat you want before bed. your body can use the proteins. hgh and test are highest when you sleep, it stands to reason to eat protein before bed
That's not quite accurate. Eating carbs at night will not hurt you. Actually, the extra carbs prevent protein from being used as fuel leaving it for muscle building. And what does eating protein at night have to do with anything. My suggestion is stop taking advice from uneducated bodybuilders from the gym who get their advice from magazines featuring guys who take steroids to help supplement their lack of real fitness knowledge.
obviously the body handles different macros differently. Eat carbs before bed in many people will increase the fat storage. True, our methods are quite different from what everybody else does because what everybody else does doesnt work. That is jo average i am referring to. I will keep my advice from top level bodybuilders thank you very much
I have found the only reason not to eat before I go to bed at night is that I don't feel good when I wake up. Its not an issue of will I gain weight or not. Also, if you eat something you just don't instantly burn it up. It has to be broken down first. If you eat a banana, and then go work out 30 minutes later, that banana will not be whats used for energy first.
Wait a minute, if you eat something, and the glucosis is still in your blood and muscles (not in the form of fat), when we exercise, it will be burnt faster, and won't be added as fat mass, right?
on the other hand, if you eat and g oto bad, the time you are asleep will be used to store those calories as fat mass - as you're not using that energy instantly. Its a biochemical fact...
Hate to say it but you are wrong. It's the total number of calories you eat during the day not when you eat them. These are old myths that people believe.
but eating at night and then going right to sleep i heard is bad, after you snack or eat a meal at night, they say you should wait a couple of hours before going to sleep. if im wrong correct me.
Good question. Please go to my website www.BodyPerformanceTV.com and under the Forum section check out "Eating before I sleep." That should answer your question. There are also a variety of other qustions you can read. It's FREE! You can even sign-up for the videos through my website just incase our IT department forgets to post them on YouTube. Steve
What if you eat at night and then go straight to bed? I heard you still burn calories while you sleep, however, it isn't a whole lot. A lot of people are on the whole "no eating after 8 p.m." craze, what's that all about then?
im not sure this is entirely correct steve....it is true that your metabolism is higher in the mornings then it is in the evening....therefore....it does have some benefit to eat bigger meals in the morning and then taper off during the evenings

One of the most significative aspects of an healthy diet is not to eat at night.
The incapacity to use and evacuate food and the resulting restless sleep are both associated with weight gain.

Steve, I would love if you could respond to this!
mccote 3 years ago
LOL, this simple simon just doesn't get it. You have cravings at night because of high GI carbs you eat during the day, and eating more of that at night inhibits GH release when you sleep. Low blood sugar causes cravings, keep the blood sugar stable and you won't have cravings.
emanmark 3 years ago
they say eating at nights bad cause most people go to bed a few hours after dinner... and you diggest food less when your sleeping... at least thats what i've been told but your the expert not me.
ziberteck 4 years ago 2
I always thought that your metabolism slowed down significantly while you slept, forcing your body to store more of the food you consumed as fat than it would if you ate 4 hours before bed, when your metabolism is higher.
Bruinpena 4 years ago
Muscles grow in part due to the release of somatotropin, also known as hGH (human growth hormone). This is an EXTREMELY potent hormone that can cause SERIOUS muscle growth! Its your body's own natural steroids! 60% of this is released in the first half of the night when you sleep!
Insulin happens to be very effective at blocking hGH secretion. Eating a bunch of carbs before bed is a good way to negate the beneficial effects of hGH.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
hGH doesn't just build muscle, it tears down fat as well. You dont want to block this if you can help it. Avoid all carbs at least 1 hour before bed.
If you want to eat something, eat lots of fats and proteins. The facts slow down digestion, making the proteins break down slower. This supplies your body with aminos needed for repair and growth over night.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
There's a host of other reasons why WHEN you eat is almost as important as WHAT you eat, but I wont bother since there's volumes of material on this subject already available, and I'd be typing all night to address each point. But suffice to say, this video wasn't just wrong, it was out right stupid. You really should be ashamed for spouting off such nonsense when you claim to be an expert. If I were you, I'd take this video down and pretend it never existed.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
Which is EXACTLY what he said you simpleton, he made note to the fact that if you eat a LARGER ammount of calories, you will gain weit, fucking listen, god you're a douchebag.
jesterdre88 4 years ago
Steve, wouldn't an insulin response from high-sugar foods be more suited after a strenuous workout than, say, in the middle of the night? Why would we want "the storage hormone" activated before bed? Would the nutrients not be used more efficiently in this manner?
rhythmicblitz 4 years ago
You are absolutely right. He is dead wrong on this one. Do not eat carbs before you go to bed. Take in high GI liquid carbs after your workout.
When you eat almost as important was what you eat.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
I think Steve is still in denial that insulin does in fact exist. Sure, I can go along with half of the videos with misinformation (steroids, blah, blah, etc) in them, but this one could actually hamper the weight-loss program of an individual that doesn't know how to effectively diet. I won't even start on the video where he says to eat Snickers bars all day to lose weight! WAY TO GO, STEVE!!! If ignorance was a virtue, you'd be one up on Gandhi.
rhythmicblitz 4 years ago
BUt if you eat foods just before you go to bed your body will take the protein and carbohydrates that you just ate and break them down into fat as they are not ebing used so should be stored for later. I think at least.
Brisks 4 years ago
You are correct. Steve should LURK MOAR
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
Right because you look like your an expert on how to eat healthily and keep fit LOLZ.
Brisks 4 years ago
Steve, is it true that the body burns more calories while sleeping than it does while typing on a computer? If so, wouldn't it make more sense to not eat after 6 p.m. so that when you are sleeping, your body is burning stored fat and not the food that you just ate?
baybuy14 4 years ago
Thats not true, but for other reasons, you shouldn't eat carbs before bed. So you're still right.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
ummmmmmmmmm i dont get t im confused
SailorMoon44 4 years ago
oh yea definitely same number of calories of course
BUT AT NIGHT TIME WHEN YOU SLEEP YOUR BODY TAKES THAT AMOUNT OF CALORIES AND TURNS IT INTO FAT..WHICH IS REALLY HARD TO BURN OFF LATER
please do not tell me that eating at night does not gain weight...ok maybe celeries but it is so much better to drink 2 cups of water before you go to bed
there are so many studies that show this...i have been looking into this for awhile now
pinkerchaos 4 years ago

But over watching your other videos if i've done 2500 calories burned that day, the 1000 calories i intake in 3 meals during the same day regardless of the last one being before bed doesn't matter?
shakaama 4 years ago
I've always wondered about eating at night. Thanks for the info!
Keenum 5 years ago
could it not also be the fact that in the day time u eat and u also burn calories as you are more active where as t nigth you sleep susualy after eating if so... and since the body does nto metabolise stragith away is stores as fat
mamaalik12 5 years ago
Just because you're not active after eating does not mean food will automatically be stored as fat.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
Is it bad to workout after eating. Is there a time you should wait? I heard that when you eat blood rushes to your stomach and it's not good?
JimTL1000R 5 years ago
where does it go then if not stored as fat or burned? what science/experience supports this? I'm even open-minded to your theory's as I've found the so-called experts to be dead wrong years later. Eggs is the perfect example. Years ago; "avoid eggs, raises cholesterol" well, I knew that eggs like natures multi-vitamin, so I didn't heed it. 10 years later they were back-peddling. I believe nutrients work best & synergistically with the material they come with from nature. Beware of mega-isolates
WhozzWho 2 years ago
Yes I UNDERSTAND YOU Steve.. Clear as daylight, BASICALLY?? "IF" since the dawn of time we ALL ate a calorie intake of 2500 per day WITH REGULAR weights exercise, the WORLD would be a LEAN/MUSCULAR race..

I agree with you. Losing weight is all about using more calories than you take in. The dieting industry tries to make it seem more complicated so they can sell books and tapes, but it's a very simple concept in reality.
saxquiz 5 years ago
Absolutely!
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
and that is in our opinion and from observing case to case
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
Again, stop reading muscle magazines designed and written by steroid heads and try reading a book or taking a course by a Ph.D. This is exactly why I started this show and why people need help. Extra protein does not build extra muscles. Lifting weights does. Fat only comes off the body because of a calorie deficit not when you eat your caloires. And low carb diets cause weight loss because they are low calories diets.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
Not saying our way is the only way, but we dont have to convince anyone because it flat out works for us. And seperation of carbs from fats. highly debated subject. arguments are there as to why it doesnt make sense why you should seperate carbs from fats. BUt again, from case to case, it has shown to aid in dieting down. Suggesting, a calorie is not a calorie.
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
YOu asked what does protein have to do with anything. Its been shown time and time again that a. high protein builds heavy duty muscle (2 grams per pound enhanced 1.5 natural), and b. low carbs higher protein yet maintains muscle and melts fat. case to case this is true in many people. case to case, people get leaner by avoiding carbs in the late afternoon
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
why people get leaner case to case by avoiding carbs several hours before bed? Because glycogen is more depleted when waking up, and lypolsis happens easier when doing low intensity emtpy stomache green tea aided cardio upon waking up.
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
I know your type buddy. the kind that feels the need to lash out on the internet when in dissagreement. It must suck being you. TO have to face the fact that what you believe in so strong and what you've been doing for years MAY NOT BE THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO DO THINGS
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
The thing is, nobody really cares what you have to say. People who watch these videos come here for this point of veiw, because it is basic, to the point, and well explained. If we wanted your point of view, we would read muscle mags. Better yet, why don't you just make your OWN video series if you disagree so much, and then people that want to listen to you can make that choice!
seanymph83 5 years ago
rolmfao at your second post. If what your saying is true about a calorie, than i guess 1000 calories of fat is the same as 1000 calories of celery.
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
no carbs 3-4 hours before you go to bed. Feel free to eat all the lean meat you want before bed. your body can use the proteins. hgh and test are highest when you sleep, it stands to reason to eat protein before bed
EATPROTEINgetHUGeRus 5 years ago
That's not quite accurate. Eating carbs at night will not hurt you. Actually, the extra carbs prevent protein from being used as fuel leaving it for muscle building. And what does eating protein at night have to do with anything. My suggestion is stop taking advice from uneducated bodybuilders from the gym who get their advice from magazines featuring guys who take steroids to help supplement their lack of real fitness knowledge.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
obviously the body handles different macros differently. Eat carbs before bed in many people will increase the fat storage. True, our methods are quite different from what everybody else does because what everybody else does doesnt work. That is jo average i am referring to. I will keep my advice from top level bodybuilders thank you very much

BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
I have found the only reason not to eat before I go to bed at night is that I don't feel good when I wake up. Its not an issue of will I gain weight or not. Also, if you eat something you just don't instantly burn it up. It has to be broken down first. If you eat a banana, and then go work out 30 minutes later, that banana will not be whats used for energy first.
copperline78 5 years ago
Wait a minute, if you eat something, and the glucosis is still in your blood and muscles (not in the form of fat), when we exercise, it will be burnt faster, and won't be added as fat mass, right?
on the other hand, if you eat and g oto bad, the time you are asleep will be used to store those calories as fat mass - as you're not using that energy instantly. Its a biochemical fact...
rodolforibas 5 years ago
Hate to say it but you are wrong. It's the total number of calories you eat during the day not when you eat them. These are old myths that people believe.

hmm that's interesting, I was alos told what lCofT said, but if you're right then it's good for me :)

but eating at night and then going right to sleep i heard is bad, after you snack or eat a meal at night, they say you should wait a couple of hours before going to sleep. if im wrong correct me.
