I was on the phn waiting for adult protective services to answer,to report all the horrific abuse,illegal drug distribution and every form of exploitation possible,against the boarding home I had been employed with,when the two deputies busted in with the owner,a psychiatric nurse of thirty plus yrs, who knew I was enraged,so filed a mental health warrant on ME! I was taken away,tackled and injected with something that knocked me out for 3 days.The system sucks
my friend voluntarily committed himself because he could not afford a private psychiatrist and thought that by committing himself he would get one on one help with his emotional issues. Instead they pumped him full of a cocktail of drugs to make him compliant and make their jobs easier. When he asked to leave, they involuntarily committed him and he had to "play their game" and they released him after a week. DO NOT EVER EVER voluntarily commit yourself. These places are snake pits!

What would you do in the case of someone who suffers from Schizophrenia, like William Bruce, who was released due to the work of advocates who didn't understand the specificity of his illness. He killed his own mother three months after his release, and his doctor and parents knew the extent of his delusions.
@somethingtangy He should be held accountable for his actions only because it is unlikely anyone would find the cause of his problems. Schizophrenia is not a homogeneous disease. In fact, that is the only criteria to lock someone up involuntarily. When they are a danger to society.
What do you suggest doctors to do with patients that are a danger to themselves or are in an acute psychotic episode?, I bet you can not talk someone out of psychosis, should we leave them roam as they please and endanger others and themselves, let people beat them up in the street, or cars run them over while they run naked down the street?. Should we wait to let them do something illegal and throw them in jail? since they know exactly what they are doing?
@fmn2628 I dont believe that anyone is argueing that civil commitment is never appropriate. However shouldnt the accused be given the same rights as criminal defendant? In most states the hearings are held in a "court room" housed inside the institution. The accused has no right to a jury trial and the only "evidence" agaist them is the expert testimony of the two doctors. How could anyone deny that a system like this is not exceedingly vulnerable to corruption?

This happened to my dad. He had a cocaine problem in the 80s when a lot of people got addicted to coke. He abused coke for many years & needed treatment. But instead, everyone stigmatized him & just waited for him to get into the legal system. He was deemed mentally disabled & has been institutionalized against his will for years. The hospital he is at has total control over whether he can leave or not. He is force drugged, told he can't leave unless he takes the drugs. Now no one can help him.

I hate it when the GP can't help. His pills don't help. His giving 6 sessions of talk therapy doesn't help. Extended talk therapy doesn't help. Different talk therapies do not help. Being on the prozac doesn't help. Being off the prozac doesn't help. Always it seems it's me guiding the therapist rather than them offering me information and models to look at. I would like to tell everyone here it is possible to get off medications. I was diagnosed as bi polar 20 years ago when I was still a child. I was forcibly hospitalized many times by family in my youth for acting out. I am now 31 and medication free for 2 years and no adult hospitilizations. Getting off medications was hell after living on them so long. I now sleep well 8 hours every night . I of course have minor depression and minor mood swings and everyone who knows me ?'s if I am Bi polar

I refused to take medications and had to go before a juvinille court judge and explain the reason I left my house at 15 was due to my step fathers alcoholism and abusive behavior. How can anyone who does not have full knowledge of the whole of any person's experiences judge what is or is not 'normal' for that person? Does the person judging not have to assume their own general normalcy in order to do so?

can anyone PLEASE answer a question of mine. i was put on medications, alot of medication from the time i was about 8 years old until i was 16. during this period i didnt go a day without medication. it was mostly antidepressants but i dont know if they had me on anything else.anyways i would like 2 know if these drugs could have done any permanent brain damage to me.after i was taken off them i had a pretty bad breakdown and just havent felt right since. that was over 2 years ago.please help

At best you can keep healthy and maintain equilibrium and not get into a rut where you have repeated hospital stays, breakdowns, or makeing bad choices while experiencing mental health difficulties. I was forced to take Haldol and experienced genital anesthesia. I still suffer from this even though I took it for only short periods of time. I've been off psychiatric drugs for over 25 years ('found that all three breakdowns occured after severe sleep deprivation). Not only do I have no sexual urge, but I have chronic problems with my urinary system due to not being able to tell when I have to urinate til I have pressure in my abdomen. 'Finding it hard to find any info about this.
Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER answer a psychiatrist's questions or even volunteer ANY information to a psychiatrist.
You have the RIGHT to remain silent and by not communicating with the psychiatrist you will ENSURE that the psychiatrist cannot clinically diagnose you.
If they can't come up with a diagnosis, then they can't apply treatment. Eventually, they have to let you go.

When I was involuntarily incarcerated at Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, the drugs, and the fact that I had been subject to alleged burglary of my home by Ignacio, Colo., Police Department officer Crewme and unprovoked forcible assault, it was very difficult to maintain institutional stability and emotional maturity. I felt like a captive in an Al-Capone-grade human warehouse for the purpose of attempted coercive development of drug addiction for the financial benefit of the captor.

I was locked up 4 times; some of the reasons that were given: "patient cries without reason" (nobody asked me!), "patient is known to be bipolar", "patient has discussed suicide".

Less restrictive sure, that is a "solution" that is used. You have state appointed guardianships, at home commitments, assisted out-patient treatment, assertive community treatment, court mandated treatment, jail diversion contingent upon medication compliance.
But, all these things are just tool used by mental health system to force people into treatment when they don't want it. It's called "adherence technology". Psychiatrist call it "leverage".

One can go to a GP and get on Prozac, etc, or one might get 6 free session of talk therapy and extend that out of personal funds or do a combination of both. One might move between the two even. And still nothing works - nothing is resolved. One can come off the tablets and nothing is resolved. One can get a different type of talk therapy and nothing is resolved. One then thinks of going back on the pills!

my friend voluntarily committed himself because he could not afford a private psychiatrist and thought that by committing himself he would get one on one help with his emotional issues. Instead they pumped him full of a cocktail of drugs to make him compliant and make their jobs easier. When he asked to leave, they involuntarily committed him and he had to "play their game" and they released him after a week. DO NOT EVER EVER voluntarily commit yourself. These places are snake pits!

@fmn2628 I dont believe that anyone is argueing that civil commitment is never appropriate. However shouldnt the accused be given the same rights as criminal defendant? In most states the hearings are held in a "court room" housed inside the institution. The accused has no right to a jury trial and the only "evidence" agaist them is the expert testimony of the two doctors. How could anyone deny that a system like this is not exceedingly vulnerable to corruption?

I was stunned by the blatant disregard for civil rights in the system. We have no right to jury trial here in NH, when I made what I felt was a reasonable request for access to the legal library I was told on two occasions: " We don't have a legal library but the prison does."

This happened to my dad. He had a cocaine problem in the 80s when a lot of people got addicted to coke. He abused coke for many years & needed treatment. But instead, everyone stigmatized him & just waited for him to get into the legal system. He was deemed mentally disabled & has been institutionalized against his will for years. The hospital he is at has total control over whether he can leave or not. He is force drugged, told he can't leave unless he takes the drugs. Now no one can help him.

You're right about his affiliations, but does that necessarily make him a puppet to an organization of malevolent origins? Can't he also be right?
I think most people can agree that psychiatric drugs are overused, particularly on the young for whom they are not developed, and that diagnosis is subjective. My only concern with what he said here is how he implies a multi-front conspiracy.
I wonder, are libertarians a more anxious and stressed people? I share many of their sentiments.

I hate it when the GP can't help. His pills don't help. His giving 6 sessions of talk therapy doesn't help. Extended talk therapy doesn't help. Different talk therapies do not help. Being on the prozac doesn't help. Being off the prozac doesn't help. Always it seems it's me guiding the therapist rather than them offering me information and models to look at. Suddenly Maslow makes sense and I'll have to suggest that. Previously it was something else I put into his head and he went with it.

I would like to tell everyone here it is possible to get off medications. I was diagnosed as bi polar 20 years ago when I was still a child. I was forcibly hospitalized many times by family in my youth for acting out. I am now 31 and medication free for 2 years and no adult hospitilizations. Getting off medications was hell after living on them so long. I now sleep well 8 hours every night . I of course have minor depression and minor mood swings and everyone who knows me ?'s if I am Bi polar

I refused to take medications and had to go before a juvinille court judge and explain the reason I left my house at 15 was due to my step fathers alcoholism and abusive behavior. Can you imagine the look on the judges face as we told him of the drinking problem and the numerous DUI's as well as drunk and disorderlys??

Yeah, it's really deplorable, really. I sympathize with you about being hooked up in such a lie at a young age, too. I have been a victim of big pharma ever since I was like 7 or 8 years old (I'm almost 21 now). I just quit their product 10 months ago because I was literally going completely insane, and I was suffering mentally and physically from those horrific drugs. I am still experiencing some of the effects of what those horrible pills have done to me.

can anyone PLEASE answer a question of mine. i was put on medications, alot of medication from the time i was about 8 years old until i was 16. during this period i didnt go a day without medication. it was mostly antidepressants but i dont know if they had me on anything else.anyways i would like 2 know if these drugs could have done any permanent brain damage to me.after i was taken off them i had a pretty bad breakdown and just havent felt right since. that was over 2 years ago.please help

I was forced to take Haldol and experienced genital anesthesia. I still suffer from this even though I took it for only short periods of time. I've been off psychiatric drugs for over 25 years ('found that all three breakdowns occured after severe sleep deprivation). Not only do I have no sexual urge, but I have chronic problems with my urinary system due to not being able to tell when I have to urinate til I have pressure in my abdomen. 'Finding it hard to find any info about this.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER answer a psychiatrist's questions or even volunteer ANY information to a psychiatrist.
You have the RIGHT to remain silent and by not communicating with the psychiatrist you will ENSURE that the psychiatrist cannot clinically diagnose you.
If they can't come up with a diagnosis, then they can't apply treatment. Eventually, they have to let you go.

When I was involuntarily incarcerated at Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, the drugs, and the fact that I had been subject to alleged burglary of my home by Ignacio, Colo., Police Department officer Crewme and unprovoked forcible assault, it was very difficult to maintain institutional stability and emotional maturity. I was locked up 4 times; some of the reasons that were given: "patient cries without reason" (nobody asked me!), "patient is known to be bipolar", "patient has discussed suicide".
No law court, each time 3 weeks, the first few days in isolation. I won't say I didn't need help, but this was just a living nightmare. I'd rather die than wake up in isolation once again.

With this, I am 100% on the doc's side. Texas is also well known as one of the *most* backwards states when it comes to this issue. It is also a giant testing ground because MHMR is in bed with the pharm/chem industry. Texas is like a 3rd world testing ground for psych drugs on the poor and imprisoned.

I think that's an entirely different issue since mental disorders aren't contagious.
Quarantine has it's place. However, I think the person should still have the right to refuse medical treatment if they don't desire it.

Guardianships are only as good as the guardian.
Ultimately, I think a person shouldn't be able to be committed against their will unless they have actually committed a crime. That's really the only way to protect civil rights.
Otherwise commitments are based on someone's arbitrary opinion.

Agreed. I'm just trying to think of a less restrictive solution to being locked up/medicated that could be presented as an alternative to a legal system that is disinclined to look for alternatives.
It seems that a person with a mild psychiatric disorder might respond well to a guardianship that is suited to his particular situation without the full abrogation of his rights.

Less restrictive sure, that is a "solution" that is used. You have state appointed guardianships, at home commitments, assisted out-patient treatment, assertive community treatment, court mandated treatment, jail diversion contingent upon medication compliance.
But, all these things are just tool used by mental health system to force people into treatment when they don't want it. It's called "adherence technology". Psychiatrist call it "leverage".

It's difficult being the one with the problem(s) though. One can go to a GP and get on Prozac, etc, or one might get 6 free session of talk therapy and extend that out of personal funds or do a combination of both. One might move between the two even. And still nothing works - nothing is resolved. One can come off the tablets and nothing is resolved. One can get a different type of talk therapy and nothing is resolved. One then thinks of going back on the pills!
