My dr just diagnosed me with bpv. The doctor told me that the "plane" of my dizziness is up and down, in other words she said shaking my head to side to side in the "no" position will not make me dizzy, but up and down "yes" is what causes my dizziness. I do however feel a fullness and "popping" in my right ear. Should I still do this exercise if I have been diagnosed this way? Thank you!
Ive been diagnosed as suffering from vertigo but my episodes seem far more violent than just simple dizziness. When it happens the world seems to be spinning and I feel like I'm tumbling uncontrollably. I have to get to the floor and hold on to something. Its horrible
I am a CLT, MT, and this problem has been bothering me lately. Not so good when you have to position yourself to bandage clients for lymph edema. Though I knew about the Epley, I didn't really know how to do the exercises myself.
Hope this will help alleviate the "twirling". - Thank you again.
Thank you for the video. I've had Epley manouver performed on me, and modified a version of Semont manouver to do at home, but this is the first time I found Brandt-Daroff. I had a major attack of BBPV, tried it and it worked. It is most helpful of you to post the video, and certainly not a malpractice.
I do have a comment of caution. Initially, the vertigo is so strong, you cannot sit up by yourself. Hold onto something, or someone, so you don't fall over.
Quite simple to follow. Thank you. I was diagnosed with BPPV and I am unable to walk unsupported. I will be following these steps as per doctor's instructions. Again, I thank you.
Brandt-Daroff and housework are not exclusive - if housework provokes dizziness then, for a short period, she could avoid those specific activities. What is it about the housework?
For example, making the bed, vacuuming and washing dishes all have in common trunk flexion and looking down. Is that what provokes dizziness? If so, then dusting and hanging clothes on the line are appropriate activities.
Hi Tim, I want to ask you something. My mother is currently doing these exercises as ordered by her doctor. Now what I want to ask you is, before she starts these exercises, does she need some days without doing housework? I am asking this because her doctor has told her to do so. And during those two days, does she has to make those exercises as well?
I recently had a cold or flu (not sure) but i got vertigo with it about two weeks ago. I had vertigo really bad for only one day which was the first day i got it. I havent had another attack like that since and im getting over my cold but i still dont feel 100 percent perfect like i used to. I still feel like my balance is a little tiny bit off. My docter said it was slight case of bppv and said it would go away on its own. Do you think by doing this maneuver i can speed up the process?
Hi Tim, I have used these exercises and found them very effective. I am just a little confused as your two you tube posts (this one and "Brandt-Daroff Repositioning Exercises") contradict each other as to which side to lay down on first according to which inner ear is affected. Can you clarify which one is correct? Thanks, Ian.
@pillar66 Ok - I'll go back and review the audio. The affected side is always the side the head is turned to.
The technique is described in sidelying here but some sources describe supine.
For example, if your therapist or doctor has determined that the right inner ear is affected, turn the head to the right and lay down on your left side.
Alternatively, you could turn the head to the right and lay down flat on your back.
@cervelo58 Tim, I just became aware of all the Utube videos treatments for vertigo, when my neighbor told me his physician gave him a prescription to go home and watch a particular video on utube for his vertigo. What would be great improvement is for someone to categorize the therapeutic exercises that are on Utube and what the advantages and disadvantages of each of the different exercises, It is mind boggling to read them all figure out which one to try. Thanks for making and posting this
@JPfrmME Great advice, Thank you JP. We do have some "curated" content at our web site at MedicalArtsRehab that attempts to categorize the exercises and positional treatments.
Be aware, however, that the purpose of these videos is NOT self-diagnosis and treatment but as a modern-day, electronic supplement to treatment and education by a trained medical provider such as a physical therapist or medical doctor.
I have had Menieres for 5 years now and i use these excersises to great effect i always feel better for doing them even though whilst doing them i experience dizziness but stick with it they work for me, it is not a cure though.
I've had labyrinthitis for about 10 weeks now. On my second week of B-D exercises, have noticed some improvement. Dizziness is now more subtle and less violent. Tend to get milder motion with nausea. When holding the positions how long max should I wait? Sometimes the dizziness comes and goes whilst in position and can gone on for a while. It's generally worse when sitting up rather than lying down? Do they generally take two weeks for complete relief? Thanks
@MrAliyak Labyrinthitis is not expected to respond to Brandt-Daroff. You may have some overlay - canalith dysfunction on top of labyrinthitis in which case the B-D would tend to help the canalith dysfunction. Labyrinthitis, however, is a medical condition which should be evaluated by MD (GP or ENT).
hi i have both ears affected. ive tried brandt dorf and epley. i feel as if im being tortured. they make me cry and feel very sick. the symptoms dont stop. these excercises havent helped me. what can i do? im at my wits end
@esperanzaroja BPPV accounts for only 30% of dizzy/vertigo cases seen in primary and emergency care - you may have another condition. You need to see a physician who specializes in inner ear dysfunction. If physical measures have not helped then there are some medications that can ease your symptoms and make you more comfortable.
@kbot1104 Thank you for the stat - what setting and specialty do you see that prevalence? Since all diseases will vary according to the sample studied it's important to know where you're drawing your sample.
My reference of 30% was in primary care but I've also seen that for emergency care.
I'm guessing that your reference is for specialty care - probably ENT?
Please remember that there are multiople other causes of vertigo besides BPPV.My neighbor years ago gvae classic symptoms of vertigo and did not get better with the usual measures. Then I with embarrassment realized that he also had black tarry stools and we cured his vertigo with a blood transfusion and stopping his ulcer from bleeding! All the above demos are well done and very useful.
I was diagnosed with vertigo 25 years ago after doctors couldn't seem to figure out my problem. I understand you're not a doctor, and I'm not asking for a diagnosis. I would like to ask you though, how do you know what ear it is that has the problem, or if there is a way to do it yourself? I'm dizzy most of the time to some degree or another. Movement and sight seem to provoke my worst attacks, however, I also have problems with sound and vibrations.
I´m familiar with the risks of medical malpractice (I assume that´s what you´re referring to). I´ve also vetted these "educational" videos with my malpractice carrier.
Did you have some specific advice or comment or were you just fearmongering?
@cervelo58 I am a PA and showing someone how to lay on a table to try and possibly help their dizziness is not malpractice. I actually looked at this video to show a patient how to do it. Thanks for the video. There are always haters on the net. It is probably the worst part of listing a video on youtube.
Listen doctor, I think you are smart in using the web for accessibility for your patients, I just dont know if you'd like a legal case on your plate or not.

If you turn your head, which direction provokes the spinning?
If you can't describe true spinning, episodic in nature, provoked by changes in head position then Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is less likely to be your diagnosis.
I haven't been to the doctor to find out which side is my worst (though I think it's my left), but since this exercise is done in both directions, I'm wondering what harm there is in just guessing and doing it anyway?

The Brandt-Daroff exercise for vertigo will help controll vertigo in time.Once you get rid of the problem, like me,you don't have to exercise every single day anymore. If you feel like the vertigo symptoms coming up,just continue exercising again and besides,it's free. After so many years of discomfort I now can live normally without these terrible dizyness.
I am an audiologist & I just want to let people know if you have vertigo you should see an audiologist who diagnoses & treats vestibular disorders. 95% of my pt's are vestib. pt's and 80% of those pt's have BPPV. We don't ever recommend treating BPPV with Brandt-Daroff exercises. They are not typically successful in the treatment of BPPV. We use them as a fatiguing exercise in specific situations. Please seek out a professional if you have vertigo & don't rely on the web for treatment.
You can also see a physical therapist to find out which (inner) ear is affected (Dix-Hallpike Test), if vision provokes vertigo (gaze-induced nystagmus), if the dizziness is provoked or made worse by neck stiffness (cervicogenic dizziness) or if there are orthopedic, proprioceptive or central (CVA) causes for dizziness, vertigo and risk of future falls.
I am a physical therapist - I made the video for my patients and I give written instructions after treatment on how to use B-D for follow-up.
This makes no sense. I visited an audiologist and they did exactly what this PT did in the video. It sounds like you just want business for your "profession". This PT is offering help with a good method of treatment that my ENT also gave me and you are complaining! Ger a real job!
Yes, today my audiologist (a well-respected specialist at a very highly ranked research hospital) specifically told me to watch this video to review how to do the Brandt-Daroff technique after the Eppley procedure failed to work for me. I would say there are other opinions besides those of the audiologist who commented above. Thanks very much to the physical therapist poster of this video!
I am a physical therapy student and this is a good reference for the Brandt-Daroff exercise if you know you have BPPV. HOWEVER, these exercises only treat one specific kind of vertigo called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). If you are experiencing symptoms of vertigo you should see a physical therapist or doctor. You may have another kind of vertigo that won't be helped using this exercise or you may have vertebral basalar insufficiency which is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
oh man, i was so scared and nauseated waking up this morning... everything was spinning in front of me... at first i thought i was pregnant cuz the nausea fits the description of morning sickness.. but now i'm a lot better after doing this exercise... i just hope i won't wake up to this problem again tomorrow morning...
Thanks for this video cause i had a vertigo attack lastnight and got to read this info about this exercise...How many times il do it when im home? anyone can help?
My audiologist said this does not work overnight, but he said it can help to dissolve the crystals faster - often over a period of 1-2 weeks. He said to continue the exercises 3 times a day (morning, noon, night) and to do 3-5 reps each time. I tried this for the first time today but could only get through 3 times as the dizziness was so intense. The doc said to keep doing these until I could go 2 days in a row without symptoms.
Well i had vertigo and my excercises that i was given is similar. but a bit different. I had to look up and one spot.. lay down the same way you do right and left. but instead of looking straight up, i had to have my head in a 45 degree angle for 15 seconds, and i had to do it 5 time right side and left side. and then do the same with my eyes closed. It's a Modified version of this excersise. Do they both work the same?
Thank you for this video.5 years ago My mon had a problem with vertigo. The doctor from here gave her medicines but this year she started to have vertigo and the doctor did the same... medicnes. so we decided to left to las palmas to see the doctor of vertigo. The problem was the left ear. So he showed us this tecnique,But i forgot how to do correctly... now with this video i know how to do it :) thank you very much.
Hi there. My mother feels dizzy, and doctor has prescribed dizzyness medication.
Hwever there has been no effect. Shes has been feeling the symptoms for a year. We just tried the technique for the above video. We would like to know how times many times in a day is the exercise is meant to be conducted? Furthermore, the centre you went to - las palmas, how did you discover it? Could you please reply back ASAP. Thank you!
I got vertigo about 9 months ago. And was given meds, until MY ELDERLY NEIGHBOR'S doctor told me about the eply meneuver. Every once in awhile, the vertigo comes back, from either tipping my head over to much, etc. I do this eply maneuver, and whalla..it goes away. I do this every time now, and it makes it go away.
THANKS A LOT. My mom has had ongoing spells of feeling drunk, lightheaded-ness, and definitely dizziness for 5 years now.. shes just now telling me about it, medical assistance she sought is pale, often saying something along the lines of "IN TIME, IT'LL GET BETTER, ITS NOTHING, PRESCRIPTION, DONE" I've been doing research and I've concluded the her symptoms have much to do with the vestibular system in some way...
My dr just diagnosed me with bpv.

Now its just consulting the right physician.
