50th SPS from 78-80. i cant believe how fast trees took over the nuke storage area. i've always wondered how long the bar we built in the security police barracks lasted.
I am amazed a German would care to make a video. Great photography. I hear the comissary(s) was brand new when they closed the place. Heck, looks like they could re-open the place tomorrow! Surprised they left all those appliances in the buildings. In the states they call those buildings public housing.
Thanks for the video. These bases were completely self sufficient. It is sad to see them abandoned, and useless. Especially when you think about people living in cardboard boxes. Not in Germany but other places around the World.

I was TDY at Hahn AB in 1984 and was stationed at Spandahlem AB until 1988. Stayed at the Hotel Berghof in Sohren with the Conrad family. They were absolutely wonderful! Did my first Volksmarch in Sohren. Now I have a business that is available in Germany. Das ist Wunderbar!
Yup, lived and served at Hahn AB, 50 CSG from 87-90 as the Base Intro Manager from your local CBPO. Hope all of you that went through my briefings had a great time despite all those LSN,s in full chem gear doing 12 2 15 hour shifts. I got hooked on Europe and now live in cologne. Best wishes to all the "HAWKS"!
Great video... so nostalgic! My father was stationed at Hahn from 1955-1958. I was in the 8th and 9th grades at Hahn and went to boarding school in Wiesbaden. It was a great to live in my early teen years. Mr. Swain, Mrs. Steppler, Mr. Gardner, Frau Genthe, Herr Kosmali, Mr. Root, Tom Tebbs, Manfred Nardini, Earl & Farris Mills, Janet Johnson, Sara & Dolly Wanz & Eddy Harris are many of the good people I met there.

What a happy sight all that abandoned military real estate. Thank goodness it never had to be used. It was the peak of American prowes when our main enemy collapsed right in front of us. Amazing how Bin Laden can drive America to collapse just as we were able to drive the USSR to collapse.
So sad to see Hahn abandoned. It was my first assignment from jan 81- jan 83. I loved every minute of the experience of being there. Spent my time on the flightline working F-4's then F-16's
Although now I believe that most American bases overseas should be closed, it is still nice to reminisce of my wonderful two years at Hahn (50th SPS); even with the constant exercises and 12hr shifts, in mop gear!
Thanks for the tour. Was there 57-61. My dad flew the f 86 in the 496th. I did kindergarten through 3rd grade there. I still think of the times i sat in a classroom and stared out the window looking into those woods. My two brothers were born there. Great memories...........
I was stationed there from 1956 thru 1960 with the 496th FIS as a crew chief on the F86D's. I probably strapped your dad into his seat more than once. What was his name and rank? Also great memories and my first son was born there in 1959. I was sure sad to see the dispair.
I can't believe that a video of a place I haven't been to in 20 years could choke me up so very much. Thank you for posting this - I was there with my parents from 87-90 and have MANY fond memories of my time there. I was only 14 when I left and this video admittedly makes me feel a little old when I can actually see how much time has passed :)
Great soundtrack, awesome pictures. Thanks for creating this and sharing it. I was stationed at Hahn from 84-86 in Base Supply and loved it. It is sad to see it like this.
It´s sad to see such a lot of unused assets rotting away. In Iceland, a whole community at NASKEF was shut down in 6 months in 2006. However, the facilities have been turned into a university campus, with a swimming pool, a gym, clubs, kindergarten and everything needed. Just imagine the possibilities. This place is probably beyond the point of being used again. How much money has been thrown away?
i tell you, you can always here the jetnoise around the shelters. when you stay between the buildings at campus, you can also hear loughing kids between the wisteling of wind.
Great place great peolpe, all of you Ami´s are not forgotten!
I was stationed at Rhein Mein AB and that is now closed as well, alot of my friends were at Hahn, they talked well of it, sounds like it was a nice place to be- those days are gone forever i am afraid
I arrived at Hahn on Nov 3rd, 1989, six days before the Berlin Wall came down. A lot changed at Hahn during my time there. The two Germany's were reunified on Oct 3rd, 1990. The 10 TFS was sent to Desert Storm. When they returned we were notified that Hahn was closing. I left Hahn in 1993 as we were turning off the lights. See the videos I posted of Hahn from 1990-1991 when it was still a thriving base.
I lived there from about 85-89. I was only there through kindergarten so I don't remember too much. I remember doing a lot of volksmarching with my family. I also remembered living in an apartment complex and playing with the kids. A lot of them used to skateboard there. I also remember the pine cone fights in the woods. I loved playing in the woods.
My father was stationed there from 1980-1984.....it really is sad to see Hahn in its condition. I went to Hahn Elementary from kindergarten through 2nd grade.
My dad Gene was stationed at Hahn from 64-67. We lived in a 4th floor apt (above our best friends Luana and 'Booboo') in the second building on the left as you entered the housing area (and in the video!). Thank you for showing the interiors - it brought back a lot of memories (including sticking my pinky in one of the bedroom electrical sockets - 'This looks like it'll fit!' - and playing in the basements). Reading through the comments I'm not the only one who cried! Powerfully done! :)
I was stationed there in 1980-82 i was a 461 worked for line delivery.allot of good times! Was sad to see what it has become!! cant take away the good memories though!
I was at Hahn AB 1983-1985 and 1989-1992 was the best time of my life hard to see it in ruins...hahn was a little world all in its self...erich pfleaidermahnn
@Erich19831985 Erich- It has been 20 years, but I too was at Hahn as a "Dirt Boy" in the CE--was there from 86-90-- I seem to recall knowing you from somewhere. Of course the Dolly bar or ??? Nothing like F-16 jetblast to warm your chem gear in the morning! Do you know how we might have known each other? I was then just an Airman, but now a Major working on retirement!

oh wow!where to start,my dad was in the 50th supply P.O.L. guy at hahn 77-81,i was a dependant,i remember the f-4e models as the f-16 where coming in ,all the fun at hahn as a high school kid ,man onbase housing was fun,all the maids room ect.and the rec center,me and all my brothers remember hahn so well, i often wish i could go back in time to those days at hahn, hahn germany i miss u
OMGOSH! This video made me CRY. My Brother and I grew up her from 1985-1990
I have thought about this base since I moved when I was 10...SO many memories on this base. I miss it so much. Thank you so much for posting this video....I have played pictures in my mind over and over again at what I thought things looked like when I was little...but watching the video brought EVERYTHING back...thank you!
I was TDY to Ramstein 5 years ago. I went to see what was left of the bases we closed. I was surprised to see that Aeroflot is a major airline operating out of a former US Cold War base.
I couldn't help but cry when watching the abandoned pictures of Hahn...we were there until 1993 when the base closed down. My son was born there and to see it like a ghost town brings back all the wonderful memories of how busy it used to be. THANK YOU! I LOVE THIS!
I wish my Dad were alive to see these photos. Thank you so much for sharing. If anyone can go back to 1947-1952...Dad was working at Hahn as a German civilian-liaison with the Americans. I was born there, too. Happy memories after the war years....
Hello Rick Cuthbert I remember your smiling face. This is Dick Powell you may remember my sister Mary Jane. The video brought back some nice memories.
I left Hahn the summer of '69. There are many good memories there. My Dad was in the 350th MMS. My first job was working in the commissary for tips only. We loved pay days, as we could make over $100 a day. Rick
I left Hahn in '69. I was nine years old. I was six when we went there. I have many wonderful memories of living on Hahn, but the first year I was in Germany we lived off base, I have tried to find that wonderful villiage for years, and can not. I can remember so much all those brave soilders singing when the 496th comes marching in...to the tune of when the sanints come marching in. It was a wonderful time, and I always look back at the mid to end sixties as a magical time in my life.
I was stationed there from 1981 to 1983. I lived in a nearby town...I miss it so. It was so beautiful in the area...beautiful woods and the Mosel is what I miss the most!! I will never forget my time there. I worked in the Command Post...My name is Patrick Lee...I miss you my beloved Germany!!
Interesting. Wish more footage showing the surrounding countryside and villages would have been included. Anyway still great video. I was stationed there from Jan 66 to Jan 69, as a clerk in the 50 SPS Orderly Room. Returned in Aug 2003 for a short visit. Very emotional to see base then. However, still brought back fond memories. Walked Lautzenhausen from Last Gausthaus to First "G." Still so many memories of being stationed there. Still in contact with many who I served with.
HAHN HAWKS is a yahoo group-check it out if you want to find some of the people you use to live with there. I was a child there 85 to 88. I was a tight knit bunch of folks back then. I would trade my hat for a brochen right now.....
this brings back so many memories. the last building that you show was my barracks, bld 669. I can't believe you got into the wsa and shown the structures. great job, I got to show my daughter what two years of my life was like.
I think at the time I was on "A" flight security, when we left to Desert Shield/Desert Storm, I was on Echo flight security, when we came back, I was assigned to days and Echo was dis banned..
I was on the first floor facing south, room 117, I believe.
Wow, this was blast of the past. I spent my teenage years on this base. Part time on the economy and part in base housing. I think I even saw my old building. I remember living across from the Yourth Center. Remember the dances? Thanks for letting us see it again. I even had my first job bagging groceries at the commissary. 1976-1980..Go Hawks!
I was there during those years, but in grade school....I totally remember the AYA dances...remeber the snack back to the left right when you walked into the AYA...they had the greatest nachos...haha
I was there between 76 and 80 best place I ever served in. I miss a lot of the friends I made there German as well as American. Hate to see it all abandoned.
Thanks for the trip I was there from 62-65 I worked on crash rescue 50th CES. Our crew slept and lived in the left hand part of the control tower above the crash truck ports. Thanks again, Alfred Garcia
That name sounds familiar but I was one year younger than you, so we wouldn't have shared a class I don't think. Buhlog huh? I'll have to ask my mom about that. I seem to remember being in a class that had a teacher named Mr. Phillips. I distinctly remember him asking me if I could pronounce the word "Pennsylvania" and I completely murdered it!
I did get the chance to see Hahn again in 2007, but only briefly and never left the airstrip. I was in the Army and was being deployed to Qatar and Kuwait. We had a layover on Hahn. Imagine my surprise when I walked in and saw the banner hanging on the wall that said, "Welcome to the former Hahn AFB" I wish I could've looked around, but no chance. Besides, when we left TX it was hot. It was snowing in Germany and we had no jackets. ^_^
We really appreciate the professional job done on this and we felt it all pull at our heart strings because of fond memories we have had living and working at Hahn AB. My children grew up there and they will long remember their experiences in Germany as Hahn AB was our home from 85-90 and not Hahn Airport. So to us the BASE is abandoned, not the memories which we will carry with us forever.
I was there in 2004...I couldn't beleive how much stuff was left to rot...Bitburg was the same way. At least during the Cold War you knew who the enemy was...nowadays..it just seems less safer.
Yes, i was also wondering when i saw the boiler there. there was a stamp written that the last maintenance was made 2005.i couldnt belive my eyes. maybe the airport wanted to use it for something else. i dont know. but this building is totally abandoned right now.
Thanks for the video. I was AMMO at Hahn on main base and at Area 9, 89-91. Good times, great people, wonderful country and fond memories. I remember painting the giant 15 foot piss pot at Area 9. J. David Lopez, SGT, AMMO, IYAAYAS
I lived in the housing area 76-79 as a boy. I was able to return this summer (June 2008) for the first time in nearly 30 yrs -- half the base is gone (now airport) and the other half is a ghost town (portrayed well here). The half that remains, without the weeds, has changed little in 30yrs! I was able to enter my old building, and found that the ugly 1970's green bathroom sink and tub were still in my old apartment! My years at Hahn were an adventure; so sad to see it empty and decaying...
To those who ask why it closed: when the cold war ended, America could no longer afford all those expensive air bases in Europe. Of the seven that were in Germany, all were closed but two (Ramstein and Spangdahlem). The personnel and aircraft were reassigned to other bases, mostly in the USA.
The base is not completely forgotten by the US Air Force... a small plot of land (near where the movie theater was) contains a microwave antenna that is fenced off and still in use (maintained by Spangdahlem AB). Also; US troops travelling to/from Iraq fly in chartered civilian planes that often refuel at Hahn during a 2-hr layover in which the troops are bussed to the old Rec Center to stretch their legs and drink some German beer before flying out again.
I had a layover at Hahn in 2007 on my way to Kuwait. It was the first time I'd been on Hahn in 17 years. I was shocked to see the banner telling me where I was. It did look vaguely familiar. I didn't go to the flight line much as a kid. Oh, and we weren't allowed to have any beer on our layover there.
My dad, Terry Martin, was stationed at Morbach and Hahn - we were there for a total of 8 years. I graduated high school there in 1991. Those were some of the best times!! I really loved seeing all of these pictures - thanks for posting it!! Kristin (Aull) Cunningham
Lived on Hahn in 66-67, worked at Morbach, first overseas assignment Came back in 74 for FTD class when stationed at Bitburg. Always have had good memories of being there.
Thanks, great slide show. I was stationed there with the 50th SPS from 1982-1984. Watching this brought back some great memories. Hahn, and the people I served with there will always have a special place in my heart.
Oh my gosh! I was there when the base closed in the summer of 1993 and it doesn't look like it has changed at all. Seems like yesterday that place was up and running!
Sort of like a ghost-air base, like what you see over there near Chernobyl. Sad.
Was there from 84-86 in the Army C- Battery 6/56 ADA. Many great memories. I hope to return to see what is left and to find my off post motor pool and weapon system area.
As Air Force dependents, my brother and I pretty much grew up without roots, but Hahn is as close as we ever came to a real home. From 63-67 we lived there and I'll never, ever forget those majestic woods surrounding the housing area. Thanks for the photos; wonderfully done.
I visited Hahn in Sept 06, 20 years 2 the day that I left n spent a day living in the past. Glad I did. Lots of memories but like the Citadel of Verdun, Hahn is just another relic of the past. I'll never forget my time there from 84-86. From what I saw, the Hahn as shown in this video will not be around much longer...LOTS of changes. From bldg 116 to the old main gate - nothing left. It's all a parking lot now (literally).
This is a nice video but it doesn´t show the reality at all! I am from Lautzenhausen and the former Hahn Air Base isn´t abandoned at all. I live in Munich today but I visit my home town regularly.
Everything you see in this video is there but that´s not all! Hahn is a civilian airport with about 3 million passangers a year and it´s #4 cargo airport in Germany. In the housing you can find the Police School of Rhineland Palatinate. But nothing is seen in the video.
Of course the Airport isn't abandoned but to face the reality allot of places are really not in use anymore and many houses are abandoned. okey i know many other places which are totaly not in use. and luckily Hahn Airport isnt one of this.
You did an outstanding job with this video. I was stationed at Hahn from 1980-82 and lived in Barracks 310 for a year and then in Sohren for a year. Barracks 310 is in your video, it's the one directly across the street from the Chapel. Thank you for making this, it brought back a lot of memories.
I grew up at Hahn. We were there from Jun 83 to Aug 87 (all 4 years of high school). They are still about the best days of my life. I miss Hahn regularly and wish I had never left. It is sad to see it this way but time moves on....
i live here in hahn and im prowd to live here i go often through that Abandoned Military Area and i ask myself who lived in those buildings by the way very nice work with the pictures i wished i could have seen the Military Area as all the americans lived there unfortunately the buildings are being torn off from the old military base
I want to thank you for a GREAT video, sure brought back the memories, but it is kind of sad seeing the base in the state that it is knowing what it looked like before. thanks again. Scott Nelson Wueshiem 88 to 90
That was quite the memory jarrer! As a MORBACH AMMO Vet, I used to joke that Hahn was for paydays, appointments, shopping and emergencies. As I reflect, doesn't that make it a city? GREAT job on the project and I hope your next project will be about the Morbach/Wenigerath AMMO Storage area. The "bomb dump" turned "Wind Farm." Time marches on, but God bless Hahn...and surroundings! Now, go to Morbach Kirmes for me!
Wonderful photos. Good job on the video. Thank you for sharing it with me and my friends that were at Hahn over the many years of it being an active Air Base.
I was at Bitburg from 82 to 84 with Bravo Battery 6/56 Did FTX around Hahn also So sad to see them abandoned

Hope all of you that went through my briefings had a great time despite all those LSN,s in full chem gear doing 12 2 15 hour shifts. I got hooked on Europe and now live in cologne.

I can't believe that a video of a place I haven't been to in 20 years could choke me up so very much. Thank you for posting this - I was there with my parents from 87-90 and have MANY fond memories of my time there.

I have many wonderful memories of living on Hahn, but the first year I was in Germany we lived off base, I have tried to find that wonderful villiage for years, and can not. I can remember so much all those brave soilders singing when the 496th comes marching in...to the tune of when the sanints come marching in. ^_^
BradleyF81 2 years ago
We really appreciate the professional job done on this and we felt it all pull at our heart strings because of fond memories we have had living and working at Hahn AB. My children grew up there and they will long remember their experiences in Germany as Hahn AB was our home from 85-90 and not Hahn Airport. So to us the BASE is abandoned, not the memories which we will carry with us forever.

Lazascar 3 years ago
To those who ask why it closed: when the cold war ended, America could no longer afford all those expensive air bases in Europe. Of the seven that were in Germany, all were closed but two (Ramstein and Spangdahlem). The personnel and aircraft were reassigned to other bases, mostly in the USA.
Lazascar 3 years ago
The base is not completely forgotten by the US Air Force... a small plot of land (near where the movie theater was) contains a microwave antenna that is fenced off and still in use (maintained by Spangdahlem AB). Also; US troops travelling to/from Iraq fly in chartered civilian planes that often refuel at Hahn during a 2-hr layover in which the troops are bussed to the old Rec Center to stretch their legs and drink some German beer before flying out again.
Lazascar 3 years ago
I had a layover at Hahn in 2007 on my way to Kuwait. It was the first time I'd been on Hahn in 17 years. I was shocked to see the banner telling me where I was. It did look vaguely familiar. I didn't go to the flight line much as a kid. Oh, and we weren't allowed to have any beer on our layover there.

But nothing is seen in the video.
madatti 3 years ago
Of course the Airport isn't abandoned but to face the reality allot of places are really not in use anymore and many houses are abandoned. okey i know many other places which are totaly not in use. and luckily Hahn Airport isnt one of this.

That was quite the memory jarrer! As a MORBACH AMMO Vet, I used to joke that Hahn was for paydays, appointments, shopping and emergencies. As I reflect, doesn't that make it a city?
