  • OLÉ!

  • this is why metal heads have the best taste in music. We are not single-minded. I love Obscura, and then there's Tupac and Bone Thugs for old school rap, and then Al Di Meola. Vivaldi, Beethoven, etc for Classical. \m/

  • Jazz and flamenco acoustic guitars playing in one music

    its magic!!!

  • me tienen frito los putos guiris que ni siquiera saben de la existencia de paco aaaaaaaargh, esto me pasa por oir musica en el puto yutub

  • Arguably the most brilliantly played guitar piece ever... Hadn't heard it in over 30 years... Thanks for posting it up!!!

  • @VieuxMalcommode check "Rio ancho" by Paco de Lucía

  • @zaxapitsa5 Thanks for the interesting background about this incredibly well played song :)

  • This is more Technical and Complex than one could imagine. Nice piece.

  • so the guy who composed this is al di meola alone. I thought it was a song by the trio for so long, thanks for clearing this up for me

  • @tomination90 this song is called "rio ancho", a spanish song made famous by Paco de Lucía. This guy plays awesomely but wouldn´t compose this not even in his wildest dreams

  • @zaxapitsa5 That's incorrect. This particular piece is Mediterranean Sundance, composed by Di Meola alone, and it debuted on his 1977 album "Elegant Gypsy," the cover of which is shown in the video. In 1980, they took the beginning of Mediterranean Sundance (the fast part) and the changes from Rio Ancho (which they solo over) and fused them together. If you listen, you'll notice the changes they solo over in this video are different from FNiSF.

  • @jcmyint Exactly!

  • hmm, I think kirk hammet is better.. kirk got his own, original style, al di meola is boring..... JOKING xD LOVE AL DI MEOLA!!

  • How in the hell can anyone dislike this? 6 dislikes...really?

  • I'm surprised his guitar didn't start smoking during this song...

  • @travelinblues89

It did, and has been recently diagnosed with soundhole cancer.

  • masterpiece

  • It's beautiful.

I'm happy that the dislikes on all of Al's songs are nearly non-existant.

  • 1 st guitar solo : left speaker Al Di Meola

2 nd guitar solo : right speaker Paco De Lucia or vice versa

My cousin in Sydney, Australia introduced me to this album..

Saw him live at The Jazz Cafe, London May 2007-forgot my camera !!

  • One of my favourite Al songs....thanks Al. xo

  • That fucking palm muting is in perfect timing...

  • mediterraneum sundance is from paco de lucia !!!

  • I just want to say that it's funny that the uploader of this song is a Gorguts fan.

  • @jguth66 Teehee. Gorguts are definitely one of my biggest influences composition-wise. Obscura has got to be one of the top 5 best death metal albums ever.

  • @Steve128967 This is the last place I would expect to see Obscura mentioned...

  • @UlquiorraxXxShiffer Heh... variety is key.

Really though. That album is amazing, anyone with good ears should be able to recognize that, even if they don't like metal.

From someone whose favorite kind of music is metal, I'd say it's just as good as Severed Survival, Onward to Golgotha or Altars of Madness as far as death metal goes.

  • @Steve128967 You know good bro! ;)

  • @Steve128967 haha Idd, Gorguts is really good.. I thought I was the only one listening to death metal and then something as far off as this : p

  • @jguth66 i know a deathmetal band who likes classical and jazz too but nothing else :P i personally like trance and hardstyle as well as flamenco haha :P

  • @jguth66 it's perfectly normal for metalheads to listen to classic music, especially if they're playing a guitar. You'd be suprised how many "blacker than the blackest black" metal songs are actually based on classical music.

  • @jguth66 it's a lot more common than you'd think. this kind of stuff inspires a ton of metalheads to better themselves as musicians, myself included

  • @jguth66 it's not that surprising because a lot of high-quality metal guitarist was influenced by jazz/fusion music

  • @capturethelife *was also

  • Oh my god, this song....it gives me chills.

  • I got this album in 1978 when i was in high school just as great now as it was then REAL talent

  • so good

  • onE of the best records...eveR!!!!!!!!!

  • Pure masterpiece of music.

  • @Steve128967

actually immortal technique and heretic foundation are two of my favorite artists (well the mc of heretic foundation)

ill bill is pretty good too.

there are a few hip-hop songs artists that are good

    but..

the majority have no expression of emotion (something IT has mastered, there are a couple of his songs that make my eyes water), no beauty of form or harmony.

just a simplistic 4:4 beat, maybe 2-4 bars of material recycled for 2 minutes.

objectively speaking that is not music.

  • @madeofhatred Immortal Tech sucks, listen to better hip hop... never heard of HF so can't comment on that.

Yeah, too bad expression of emotion, beauty of form and harmony are totally subjective... someone might hear, I don't know, Gorguts and get a bunch of noise, whereas I hear dark, emotionally damaged-sounding monolithic death metal.

Objectively speaking, your argument is bogus. Parroting the dictionary definition is ok as long as you realize there's so much more to music than that.

  • @Steve128967 So true. Have you found any good hip hop music that you can recommend?

  • @reet12337 Death Grips, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Blueprint, Mac Lethal, and my good friend Cory Civitarese

  • hehe....musical intellectuals also engaging in keyboard wars....eheh...ehh...hehe..

  • Still have my old Al, Paco, and Mahavishnu cassette - hope it doesn't break any time soon.

  • The story at the time about this song is pretty cool if it's true. Al & Paco sat down in the studio and recorded this in one (1!) take. They simply aren't human.

  • this is one of my all time favorite cds from al. this guy could play a flamingo guitar like nobodys business. i saw him in denver co in 2 thousand and he came out after the show to sign stuff and he did indeed sign my copy of elegant gypsy. he is a gifted player if ever there was was one

  • chi è che fischia al minuto 5:08?

  • Heard this live today!!!!!!! he even signed autographs afterwords :O

  • Just asking

This should be classified as Jazz Fusion Right?

I'm planning to use this in a presentation so I just wanna make sure

  • @nostaligic Al Dimeola is a Jazz fusion player, but this song in particular (hell even the album) takes more roots from latin jazz. As proof, the accompanying guitarist is Paco de Lucia a flamenco guitarist of some fame.

  • @nostaligic Flamenco

  • Fantastic stuff

    ...

  • I first heard Mr. di Meola in the late 70s and fell immediately in love with his playing. While I love traditional flamenco, I've always been attracted to nuevo flamenco to see how the music is evolving. I especially love that di Meola pays tribute to the roots of his music while still exploring its limits. I have come to believe that music like di Meola's, Paco Pena, Pepe Romero and, of course, Paco de Lucia is too subtle in its nuances for Americans who rely on gimmicks and fads in music.

  • Good, good but the Santana the best!

  • My first music teacher turned me on to this. This was my first DiMeola album and it blew my mind. I was much too young to really appreciate it.

  • Bien sur , que du bonheur !

  • awesoME

  • paco de lucia = horrible sound... --->> watch?v=hR7NeXglJuE

  • @voodooorc classical vs flamenco guitar, sounds different. i wouln"t call a flamenco master's sound horrible.

  • @voodooorc "paco de lucia = horrible sound... --->> watch?v=hR7NeXglJuE "

    Classical = Boring... --->> watch?v=q9vNSA0WNlw&feature=related

    Or...--->>  watch?v=ociBQdt0XQo

  • @TheTranslator100 stupid troll comment is stupid

Release YOUR version of this song and then you are allowed to have an opinion.

  • @ckyvick666 " stupid troll comment is stupid"

TROLL?!? In your case, it has nothing to do with TROLLS, since a TROLL is a human poster. Let's thy CHATTERBOT instead. Quite frankly, your commentary is similar to the automated jargon posted by CHATTERBOTS - a computer program designed to mimic human conversation implemented by the site owner. Don't think for a second I'm not aware of all the fictitious bullshit that infests the Internet - discussion forums especially...

  • @TheTranslator100 stupid troll is stupid.

  • @ckyvick666 "stupid troll is stupid."

LOL...ROTFLOL...ckyvick666 the site owner needs to program the BOT to post a new comment instead of the exact same one posted 3 days ago...lol.

  • @TheTranslator100 Stupid comment is stupid.

  • 2:25 reminds me a lot of "Entre Dos Aguas" =)

  • this tune was released on an AL di Meola album that's true. they play together ,one play with pick and the other with his fingers (flamenco style)

  • I hear paco's guitar here and im sure 1 million percent !!

  • @megalodonNL yo creo que río ancho y mediterranean sundance es la misma canción, cada uno con su estilo y cada vez que la tocan la tocan diferente, esa es su grandeza.despues de más de 30 años ya tienen que estar cansados de tocarla!

  • isnt paco in that song??

    i can hear his guitar

  • @megalodonNL ...a progression is not the only thing that makes a music to be flamenco...

  • i thought this was a paco de lucia song?

  • @blackbolt66a Nope, it was released on an Al Di Meola album and has only been recorded there as far as I know (excluding on various live albums, some of which have Paco on them). Paco plays guitar with Al on this one, though.

  • @Steve128967 Do a search on Youtube for "Rio Ancho" by Paco de Lucia. Listen to that song and this one - they are basically the same song. "Rio Ancho" was recorded in 1976, and featured other instruments besides guitar (flute solos, for example). The DiMeola version from 1977 on the the album "Elegant Gypsy" is basically Rio Ancho being played by DiMeola & Lucia without all the extraneous instruments (and renamed "Mediterannean Sundance," of course).

  • @Steve128967 Well if you read the liner notes, the song is actually written by Paco De Lucia. Yes it was released on Elegant Gypsy but Paco wrote this song.

  • @Steve128967

Actually that is not completely correct, that was the first time it was played as "Mediterranean Sundance", but "Rio Ancho", which is older and melody wise pretty much the same, is a piece by Paco De Lucia and was also first recorded by him. The difference is, for example, the intro, which was not present in the first recording of Paco De Lucia,

  • @Steve128967 ok, the "can u help me" was a joke, i just ran out of room to put in the " lol " i'll look around here and c if i can find that song. it had so much emotion in it , i just never forgot it.

  • @Steve128967 Paco de Lucia's Entre dos Aguas is the inspiration, if not the out right basis for MS - officially credited or not. You can't listen to it and not hear the similarity.

  • @randomstuff3201

    its actually rio ancho

  • @blackbolt66a If you take a few minutes for a look on his short Wikipedia biography, you'll see that Al Di Meola is the only composer of all songs in his Elegant Gypsy's album released in 1977. It is true also for Mediterranean Sundance where he plays a duo with Paco de Lucia.

  • @blackbolt66a mediterranean sundance is for al di meola but in friday night in san francisco are two songs mediterranean sundance and rio ancho rio ancho is from paco

  • @blackbolt66a It is a variation of "Rio Ancho" by Paco de Lucia off his album "Entres Dos Aguas"

  • @blackbolt66a Paco is the left side of the speakers 8)

  • @bernich88 ... yep... he is :)

  • @blackbolt66a it's a variation(sort of) on de lucia's song "rio ancho"(66') while mediterranean sundance in 77'(a year after), but both are great and al was kind enough to ask permission and ask paco to preform this this him. both are great but paco de lucia is a pioneer he revived flamenco

  • meowmix

  • @RabidxPanda wtf?

  • simply amazing

  • :O my idol

  • I STILL have t his album from when I purchased it as a kid , LOVED this song

  • @ 1:58 is that Paco saying Oiiiii? He must have been like "this dude kicks ass and looks almost as thuggy as me" lololol

  • @Metallikakka its no Oiii its OLE! an spanish expression meaning joy in this particular example. Ole is used to congratulate the bull fighter after making a good move to the bull.

  • I recently received a review of my music by a reputable reporter who compared me to this amazing man, and I've been hooked ever since.

  • I heard and saw Al first time When I saw him play with paco, I did nothing about him.

But I must say this guy is genius when it comes to create beautiful music

  • I love how you can hear a barely audible whistle at the very end. As if to say, "Daaaaaaaamn!".

  • Supreme

  • I first heard this song and album when I was around 20 years old. It blew me away then and still does.

  • AMAZING, My dad showed me this song when I was ten years old. xD

  • @rawroxiee realy, why not just say, it was a very nice musical piece!

  • Shredder Fi, man. Shredder Fi.

  • paco is amazing

  • Brilliant

  • simply brilliant!!

regardless of what any one says... one can not be blind to the marvellous beauty of ... the harmonies ... the tone of the strings ... the melodies ...

been reading the "posted coments" ... sigh.... the fools....

    always sincer , the gypsy

  • <3 !! :)

  • I have been listening to this since i was 17... nearly 35 years ago now and I never tire of listening to it..soo beautiful ..timeless.. everything else sounds dated this doesnt...

  • Okay, listen.

There isn't any rap, hip hop or anything of that sort in this video... so don't talk about it.

If someone has elected you to be the official judge of whether something is "real" music or not, let me know... otherwise I'm just going to start deleting comments that are of that nature.

  • @Steve128967 dam right :)

  • @Steve128967 yes hello, i have officially been elected judge of whether or not music is real. some rap and hip-hop is real, most is not. glad i could help clear things up

  • @jewfishie2 You should be up for re-election haah

  • @Steve128967 Well said, I too am tired of seeing people comment and argue about something that has nothing to do with a certain song.

  • @Steve128967 i bought an al di meola c.d. around 1990 but i dont remember which one it was. i don't remember the name of the song. i didn't even remember the guys name till just recently. but i never forgot the haunting melody and somber..... energy of that song. and no, i don't even know how to describe it. when i heard it, it sort of made me feel like he was in a church, a big one with very high ceilings, and of course he was singing in italian, so i don't even know the lyrics. can u help me?

  • @Steve128967

I agree. I went to You Tube to hear this song (thanks for posting BTW) and discovered comment garbage about rap, hip hop, etc. Should make some deletes to keep the focus on Di Meola.

  • What the fuck are you saying here people! Rap, rap, rap. Damn. Change the theme. Start speaking about the track and not about that stupid shit :\

BTW, the song is the monster

  • al would have a better chance of being a rapper than a rapper would have of playing this, there is no chance that way, and i dont mind some rap , but this is gifted and took way more hard work

  • Esos alzapuas son magicos. Al dimeola no puede hacer eso.

  • very good aldiiiiiiiii

  • @SmittyBaGitty I feel sorry for mankind that someone like you exist. Nothing but ignorance and lack of basic knowledge about kinds of music. Well done.

  • Great!

  • AL DAN PACO tangan gatal,koeti,koeti,trus.....

  • im an underground hip-hop artist and i dig this kinda stuff. lol @ ignorance

  • @SmittyBaGitty wow, how ignorant is that. I mean, I'm a rap fan and I listen to all kinds of music, from jazz, blues, through rock and metal to rap. What's the point of comparing those? rap is about the flow, lyrics and rhymes, so I guess Al Di Meola doesn't neccessarily can rap, which doesn't make him a bad musician? And does it make rappers bad if they can't play like that?

  • @hendrixkixas there's no reason to be insulting anyone's tastes the best music in the world is the one you like!!! If you think they don't have musical appreciation just keep it to yourself

  • Damn it, no-one's better than anyone. All three musicians have their own unique style and I listen to all of them.

  • He is great, I love latin style and i plan to apply it to my studies, it has a very flamenco style to it. If you guys get the chance check out Jorge Morel

  • god has taken a guitar *O*

damn it this song's tab is a monster

someday i will play this even if i have to die in the attempt

  • Amazingly beautiful!

  • Amazingly beautiful!

  • this is awesome

almost like elevator music on crack

  • solo le cambio unas cosas a la de paco-paco the best, la mejor tecnica

  • za laku noc!!!! :))))

  • paco de lucia is the best

    .

  • answer:tobilius is fag. the end.

  • Looking at his videos I think it's pretty clear tobilius is a troll. Just ignore it. I will give him that Dimeola is usually pretty stale, and Paco really ripped it up in Friday Night in San Francisco. In my opinion, Mclaughlin is better than either of them as far as composition goes. Paco and Dimeola rehash solos a lot, but so does Mclaughlin. For my money, I'll take a master musician with a strong sense of composition over a master guitarist who makes only decent to pretty good music any day.

  • they see me troillin'

  • @tobilius

It is this level of musical benightedness that erodes the credibility of the entire youtube forum, being that a great percentage of posts on youtube are similar in nature...

  • @tobilius "i can't believe you are yourself, posting uninterrupted 16th noodling like that."

i can't believe you are yourself, along with the vast majority of youtubers, posting gormless scat like that.

  • @tobilius

tobilius ma non ti avrà mica trombato la donna?

  • I like the FNISF version just for the amazing energy and the crowd feeding off of it, and Paco is lot moreprominent (hell most of it is Rio Ancho), but this one was mind boggling at the time.

  • This is a different Al and Paco - this is very constructed. But its a marvel of single note technique - its just so incredibly CLEAN. Points of interest : note dynamic changes not only between but IN runs - Al is very mobile with right hand position. And the 32nd note sequencing BURN ,and pacos tastiness..and this is 1977. On steel strings. Recorded on half-inch tape - no bullshit here. Al is very special, and very ahead of his time, pick technique-wise.

  • Comment removed

  • thats totally true, there is always something good from each genre

  • stfu... fucking noob

  • Are you people all douche bags? This is one of the best songs ever laid down on wax and your all taking about rap music. Respect the master Di Meola!!!!!

  • rap suks pop is pretty good

  • Beatles were pop.

I'm sure a good majority of your favorite bands were influenced by The Beatles.

  • If that's what you believe so be it.

  • Not all rap is garbage...the mainstream is though. I like this and i like rap. You'll probably thumb this down but that's a very narrow minded comment you just made.

  • At least you like a wide range of shit

  • @Flyinhighh22 I'm with you buddy.

Mainstream Rap is garbage, but don't be fooled, there is quality hip-hop out there; Same goes for any other kind of genre.

Al Di Meola rocks my socks!

  • @surfinjazzy

    Haha thx man I agree.

  • I agree with you.

It wasn't rap itself that made people stupid. It was stupid people that made rap that make stupid people that make rap that make more stupid people, so on and so forth.

  • Comment removed

  • i totally agree with you SmittyBaGitty!!

  • Good shit

  • you can't get more awesome than this

lo mas grosso que escuche en mi vida. elegante gitana...
